[Crustacea • 2017] Neocaridina ikiensis • A New Species of Land-locked Freshwater Shrimp of the Genus Neocaridina (Decapoda: Caridea: Atyidae) from Iki Island, Kyushu, Japan ---ScRaBBlE

A new species of land-locked freshwater shrimp, Neocaridina ikiensis (Decapoda: Caridea: Atyidae), is described from Iki Island, Kyushu, Japan, based on morphological and molecular (mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene) evidence. This new species can be distinguished from its congeners by a suite of characters, including rostrum structure, number of post-orbital rostral teeth, male first and second pleopods and telson structure. The molecular evidence of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) shows this species has sufficient interspecific divergence, and its high intraspecific variation suggests that it evolved on this island over a long period of time. Based on the molecular clock estimation, the speciation of N. ikiensis n. sp. is supposed to be related with the quiescent periods of volcanoes on this island. This is the second endemic species of Neocaridina known, after N. denticulata (De Haan, 1844), from the main islands of Japan.

Taxonomy

Etymology: The species is named after the type locality, Iki Island, Nagasaki Pref., western Japan. 

Ecological notes: Habitat (Fig. 5B) of the species is small streams, about 2 m wide, with slow flowing water. Stream banks were heavily vegetated. Collection sites were about 100 m to 1 km away from the coast. In one of the streams, a rice paddy is found adjacent to its upper reach, where substrate was muddy and with various sized rocks submerged in the water. The freshwater crab Geothelphusa dehaani (White, 1847) and the catadromous atyid shrimp Caridina typus H. Milne Edwards, 1837 were found sympatric with the new species.

Distribution: Presently known only from several streams in Iki Island, western Japan.

[Ichthyology • 2017] Microphysogobio zhangi • A New Species of Microphysogobio (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) from Guangxi Province, Southern China ---ScRaBBlE

Microphysogobio zhangi n. sp., a new cyprinid species is described from Guangxi Province, China. Morphological and molecular evidence based on mitochondrial DNA Cytochrome b (Cyt b) sequence were used for comparing this new species and other related species. The phylogenetic tree topology revealed that this new species is closely related to M. elongatus and M. fukiensis. We also observed the existence of a peculiar trans-river gene flow in the Pearl River and the Yangtze River populations, and speculated that it was caused by an ancient artificial canal, the Lingqu Canal, which forming a pathway directly connecting these two rivers.

Etymology: The Latinized specific name, “zhangi” is derived from the name of the Chinese ichthyologist “Professor Chunguang Zhang” in recognition of his great contribution to the fish taxonomic studies in China.


Distribution: Known only from the middle reaches of the Yu River and the Li River, two tributaries of the Pearl River, and the Xiang River, a tributary of the Yangtze River, located in Guangxi and Hunan Provinces of China

[Herpetology • 2018] Liolaemus antonietae • The True Identity of the New World Iguanid Lizard Liolaemus chillanensis Müller & Hellmich 1932 (Iguania: Liolaemidae) and Description of A New Species in the Liolaemus elongatus Group ---ScRaBBlE

Liolaemus is a particularly species-rich radiation of New World iguanid lizards from southern South America. Thanks to intense systematic and taxonomic research, the knowledge on its species-level diversity has increased rapidly over the past several years. The L. elongatus species-complex has received considerable attention and a remarkable case is Liolaemus chillanensis, a name that has been used for two different species that are sympatric in Termas de Chillán, central Chile. Since the holotype is lost, we propose that the first step to identify the true L. chillanensis is through the analysis of the original description. Then we provide a morphological and molecular characterization of L. chillanensis based on topotypes and a description of the taxon previously confused with it.

Diagnosis: Here we provide a diagnosis in regards of all species in the L. elongatus clade plus Liolaemus chillanensis - previously confused with L. antonietae - and L. monticola - which has a similar color pattern. Liolaemus antonietae is a medium size Liolaemus (max. SVL = 77.6 mm), with many midbody scales (86-98; 91.5 ± 3.8), lateral dark band, absence of dorsal melanism or black ventral color. The males have precloacal pores and it is the only member of the L. elongatus clade that can exhibit arboreal behavior.

Distribution and natural history: Known from two localities in the Biobío Region, Chile: Termas de Chillán (type locality, 36°54'S, 71°24'W, 1,766 m, Fig. 9) and Laguna del Huemul, Shangrila (36°52'S, 71°28'W, 1,955 m), 8 km NW from the type locality. Unlike other species of the L. elongatus clade, which are mainly saxicolous (Morando et al. 2003; Avila et al. 2015), L. antonietae is mostly arboreal, which was seen basking on fallen trunks and on trees up approximately 4 m high. Few specimens were observed basking on rocks. Furthermore, we observed a very peculiar gregarious behavior, in which 18 specimens were observed coming out of the surrounding vegetation and entering to the same hollow of a stand tree (Nothofagus sp.) at sunset, in a time frame no longer than an hour. The vegetation in the type locality is dominated by Chusquea sp. and Nothofagus sp. It is an abundant lizard. At the date of capture (January), one female had three embryos and the other had several small oocytes. No remains were found in the stomach, but remnants of insects and plants along with parasitic nematodes were observed inside the intestine. In both localities, L. antonietae was found in syntopy with snake Tachymenis chilensis and lizards L. chillanensis, L. septentrionalis and L. tenuis, being recently recorded also Phymaturus vociferator (Urra et al. 2017).

 Etymology: This species is named after Antonieta Labra Lillo, a prominent Chilean herpetologist who has made significant contributions to the eco-physiology and behavior of lizards, especially to the study of the influence of chemical signals on their behavior. She has also edited the book “Herpetología de Chile”, which had a great impact on the Chilean herpetology. 
We propose the common name “Antonieta’s lizard” in English and “Lagarto de Antonieta” in Spanish. JTP gratefully thanks AL for years of teaching and collaboration.

 A new genus and four new species of freshwater crab, Cantopotamon zhuhaiense n. gen., n. sp., C. shangchuanense n. gen., n. sp., C. hengqinense n. gen., n. sp. and C. yangxiense n. gen., n. sp. are described from Guangdong, China, based on morphology and two mitochondrial markers (16S rDNA and cytochrome oxidase subunit I). Species of Cantopotamon closely resemble species of Yarepotamon Dai & Türkay, 1997, but differ by the combination of carapace, third maxilliped, male pleon, male first gonopod and female vulva characters. Molecular data derived from the mitochondrial 16S rDNA also supports the establishment of the new genus.

Diagnosis: Carapace broader than long; dorsal surface slightly convex, branchial regions relatively flat (Fig. 1A); postorbital and epigastric cristae visible, confluent (Fig. 1A); external orbital angle bluntly triangular, separated from anterolateral margin by gap (Figs. 1A, B); median lobe of posterior margin of epistome triangular (Fig. 1B). Third maxilliped ischium relatively broad; exopod reaching beyond anterior margin of ischium, with flagellum (Fig. 2D). Male pleon triangular, reaching anteriorly almost to level of posterior margins of cheliped coxae (Fig. 1C). G1 slender, inner proximal section of sub-terminal segment curved dorsally, terminal segment relatively short, sinistrally twisted on left G1 (Figs. 1D, 2B, C, 9). G2 basal segment subovate (Fig. 2A). Vulva small, ovate, not reaching suture of sternites 5/ 6 (Fig. 11). 


Etymology: The genus name is a combination of Canton, synonym for Guangdong, the province in which this genus occurs, and the generic name Potamon. Gender: neuter.

 Remarks: Although superficially similar to some species of Yarepotamon, Cantopotamon n. gen. can easily be distinguished by its confluent postorbital cristae and epigastric cristae (Fig. 1A) (versus separate in Yarepotamon, cf. Dai & Türkay, 1997: pl. II, fig. 2), twisted terminal segment of the G1 (Fig. 2C) (versus not twisted in Yarepotamon, cf. Dai & Türkay, 1997: fig. 6, 4) and relatively small female vulvae that do not reach the suture of sternites 5/6 (Fig. 11A) (versus female vulvae reaching suture of sternites 5/6 in Yarepotamon, cf. Dai & Türkay, 1997: fig. 6, 7). Yarepotamon is currently being revised by the first author. ....


Cantopotamon zhuhaiense n. sp.
Etymology: This species is named after the type locality, Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, China.

Ecology: This species is mainly aquatic, living under rocks in small hillstreams. At its type locality, C. zhuhaiense is sympatric with Nanhaipotamon cf. guangdongense Dai, 1997 and Nanhaipotamon zhuhaiense Huang, Huang & Ng, 2012. One individual, still moving, was observed within the grasp of a Nanhaipotamon cf. guangdongense in the latter’s mud burrow, suggesting they are at least occasional prey items of Nanhaipotamon.


Cantopotamon shangchuanense n. sp. 
Etymology: This species is named after the type locality, Shangchuan Island, Taishan City, Guangdong Province, China.

Ecology: This species is mainly aquatic, living under rocks in small hillstreams. The hillstream in which it was found drains directly to the sea, with Eriocheir sp. also inhabiting the lower reaches. The species of Eriocheir was not confirmed, but given the location, it was probably E. hepuensis (see Naser et al. 2012). No other potamids where found at the type locality.


Cantopotamon hengqinense n. sp.
   Etymology: This species is named after the type locality, Hengqin Island (also known as Ilha de Montanha in Portuguese), Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, China.

Ecology: This species is mainly aquatic, living under rocks in small hillstreams.

Etymology: This species is named after the type locality Yangxi, Yangjiang, Guangdong Province.

Ecology: This species is mainly aquatic, living under rocks in small hillstreams.
