Abstract
The genus of Neotropical frogs Pseudopaludicola Miranda-Ribeiro, 1926 includes 23 species, which occur throughout South America. Herein we describe a new species of Pseudopaludicola from the central region of the state of Minas Gerais (southeastern Brazil). This new species is distinguished by the adult morphology, the advertisement call, and molecular data. It is diagnosed mainly by its small size, terminal phalanges knobbed (lack of any expansion of the digital tips), proportionally short hind limbs, and its advertisement call composed of series of two-pulsed notes, emitted at a high repetition rate. In addition, we report the occurrence of the new species in the southern foothills of the Serra do Cipó National Park, at elevations lower than 800 m above sea level (a.s.l). The sister species of this new taxon is P. mineira Lobo, 1994, which occurs in rupestrian grasslands above 1200 m a.s.l. at the Serra do Cipó National Park and in Serra do Cabral, both in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. We also redescribe the advertisement call of P. mineira based on recordings from topotypical males and compare it to calls of related species.

Pseudopaludicola mineira from Pampulha, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais – Andrade et al. 2018: 87, Discussion Section.

Diagnosis: Pseudopaludicola matuta sp. nov. is assigned to the genus Pseudopaludicola by having a hypertrophied antebrachial tubercle (see Lynch 1989, Lobo 1995). The new species is characterized by the following combination of characters: (1) small size (SVL 12.8–14.2 mm in adult males); (2) absence of both, enlarged palpebral tubercles and an enlarged conical tubercle on heel; (3) relatively short hind limbs (tibiotarsal articulation only reaching the posterior margin of the eye); and (4) advertisement call composed of regular series of stereotyped two-pulsed notes, with notes having a short duration and emitted at a higher rate (notes per minute).

Etymology: The feminine noun matuta in Brazilian Portuguese means rustic, provincial, related to those who live in the countryside.

[Herpetology • 2019] Adenomera phonotriccus • A New Amazonian Species of Adenomera (Anura: Leptodactylidae) from the Brazilian state of Pará: A Tody-tyrant Voice in A Frog ---ScRaBBlE

 Adenomera phonotriccus
Carvalho, Giaretta,  Angulo, Haddad & Peloso, 2019

  DOI: 10.1206/3919.1

ABSTRACT
Leptodactylid frogs are phenotypically diverse, widely distributed across the Neotropics, and are known to harbor high levels of cryptic species diversity. This is especially true in Adenomera, where several candidate species have been recognized in a genetics-based study. Here we describe a new Amazonian species of Adenomera, which corresponds to one of the lineages previously identified as a candidate species (“sp. F”). Adenomera phonotriccus, n. sp., differs from all 18 recognized congeners by its unique advertisement call. Moreover, this species can be distinguished from nearly all congeners (except A. cotuba and A. lutzi) in having antebrachial tubercles on the undersides of its forearms. The distribution of A. phonotriccus seems to be restricted to the Araguaia-Xingu interfluve, in the eastern portion of the Brazilian state of Pará. Additional sampling effort on the right margin of the Araguaia River and along the Xingu River drainage should clarify the distribution of A. phonotriccus and perhaps result in the discovery of additional undescribed species of Adenomera in a region with high biological diversity

SPECIES ACCOUNT
Leptodactylidae Werner, 1896
Adenomera Steindachner, 1867

Adenomera phonotriccus, n. sp.

Diagnosis: Adenomera phonotriccus is differentiated from its congeners by the following combination of characters: (1) small size (adult male SVL 19.8–21.6 mm; table 1); (2) robust body shape; (3) toe tips unexpanded to slightly swollen (character states B, C; Heyer, 1973); (4) distal antebrachial tubercle on underside of forearm; (5) throat and belly cream colored, mottled white and gray in some parts; (6) two color morphotypes (presence/absence of dorsolateral stripes); (7) advertisement call consisting of a single type of pulsed note, emitted regularly, not in calling bouts; (8) advertisement notes composed of complete pulses (pulses with periods of silence in between); (9) long-lasting call duration (213‒433 ms).
...

Etymology: The epithet phonotriccus is the combination of Greek phono- (from phoné, “sound, voice”) and triccus (a small bird whose species is not identifiable, though in modern times the name is applied to tyrant flycatchers; Jobling, 2010). This name is to be treated as a noun in apposition and is an allusion to the similarity between the vocalization of the new species and those of tody-tyrants. Tody-tyrants of the Neotropical genus Hemitriccus have peculiar vocalizations, which are reminiscent of the vocalization of Adenomera phonotriccus, especially the trilled song of H. cohnhafti (see Zimmer et al., 2013). Interestingly, several Hemitriccus species are morphologically very similar, and consequently best differentiated by their vocalizations, a pattern also observed in Adenomera

Suggested vernacular name: Tody-tyrant-voiced nest-building frog.

Habitat and natural history: Adenomera phonotriccus is associated with forest habitats in Brazil’s eastern Amazonia in the state of Pará. The type locality is located on the west margin of the lower Araguaia River. This region is also occupied by savanna landscapes or ecotones between the Cerrado and Amazonian rainforest. The species was heard along an open area transect (by recent logging activity), especially at the forest edge, and inside the forest remnant. Males called while exposed or under leaf litter, and increased their calling activity during and shortly after rainfalls. The vocalization of Adenomera phonotriccus is very peculiar when heard in the field. Our first impression was that the calls might not be produced by a leptodactylid frog, or even an anuran species. Indeed, the vocalization is similar to that of some Neotropical suboscine birds (e.g., Rhynchocyclidae, Tyrannidae). There were two partially syntopic species of Adenomera also in calling activity at the study site: Adenomera sp. (A. heyeri clade) and A. aff. hylaedactyla. We heard the three species calling at the same period (late afternoon), even though A. phonotriccus and Adenomera sp. ceased most calling activity at dusk, whereas A. aff. hylaedactyla continued calling through the first hours of the night. The last species occupied open areas, e.g. pasture. In contrast, A. phonotriccus and Adenomera sp., are associated with forest habitats.

Distribution (fig. 5): Adenomera phonotriccus is known with certainty only from the type locality and Marabá. However, specimens from other regions in the state of Pará were also assigned to this lineage, referred as Adenomera sp. F, by Fouquet et al. (2014). Given the high levels of cryptic species diversity in Adenomera and complex genetic structure within the lineages identified by Fouquet et al. (2014), we conservatively restrict the species’ distribution to the type locality region until additional data, especially vocalizations, are obtained for the other populations assigned to Adenomera sp. F, a lineage widely distributed in central-east Pará, northern Brazil.

[Herpetology • 2018] Pseudopaludicola florencei • A New Species of Pseudopaludicola Miranda-Ribeiro (Anura: Leptodactylidae) from eastern Brazil, with Novel Data on the Advertisement Call of Pseudopaludicola falcipes (Hensel) ---ScRaBBlE

Pseudopaludicola florencei
Andrade, Haga, Lyra, Leite, Kwet, Baptista Haddad, Toledo & Giaretta, 2018

Abstract
The Neotropical genus Pseudopaludicola includes 21 species, which occur throughout South America. Recent studies suggested that the population of Andaraí, in the state of Bahia, is an undescribed species, related to P. pocoto. Herein we formally describe this new species from lowlands of eastern Brazil. Recognition of this new species is supported by adult morphology, advertisement call, karyotype, and molecular data. It is diagnosed mainly by its small size, terminal phalanges knobbed (lack any expansion of the digital tips), proportionally short hindlimbs, 11 pairs of chromosomes, and advertisement call composed of series of three-pulsed notes, emitted at a high rate. In addition, we report for the first time the presence of P. pocoto in the campo rupestre (rupestrian grasslands) of Chapada Diamantina, a population with a much darker dorsal coloration than the population from the type locality. We also redescribed the advertisement call of P. falcipes based on recordings from topotypic males.

....

Etymology. The specific name honors Antoine Hercule Romuald Florence. Better known as Hercule Florence, a French artist, painter, polygrapher, and inventor, is acknowledged as the inventor of photography in Brazil in the 19th century. After his return from the Langsdorff’s expedition (from 1826 to 1829), Florence developed a system able to properly describe animal sounds, transcribing them into a five line music staff (Florence 1831, 1876; Toledo & Araújo 2017). Such method, termed as “Zoophonie” by Florence, was the first universal method of describing animal sounds and he is therefore designated as the “father of bioacoustics” (Vielliard 1993; Toledo & Araújo 2017). At least these two techniques (photography and zoophony = bioacoustics) are fundamental for species description nowadays (Köhler et al. 2017). Specifically, bioacoustics has proved to be efficient in clarifying the taxonomy of the genus Pseudopaludicola (as in the present study).

[Herpetology • 2018] Pseudopaludicola restinga • A New Species of Pseudopaludicola (Anura, Leptodactylidae) from Espírito Santo, Brazil ---ScRaBBlE

Pseudopaludicola restinga
Cardozo, Baldo, Pupin, Gasparini & Haddad, 2018

Abstract
We describe a new anuran species of the genus Pseudopaludicola that inhabits sandy areas in resting as associated to the Atlantic Forest biome in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The new species is characterized by: SVL 11.7–14.6 mm in males, 14.0–16.7 mm in females; body slender; fingertips knobbed, with a central groove; hindlimbs short; abdominal fold complete; arytenoid cartilages wide; prepollex with base and two segments; prehallux with base and one segment; frontoparietal fontanelle partially exposed; advertisement call with one note composed of two isolated pulses per call; call dominant frequency ranging 4,380–4,884 Hz; diploid chromosome number 22; and Ag-NORs on 8q subterminal. In addition, its 16S rDNA sequence shows high genetic distances when compared to sequences of related species, which provides strong evidence that the new species is an independent lineage.

Pseudopaludicola restinga sp. nov.

Synonyms. Pseudopaludicola aff. falcipes
Almeida, Gasparini & Peloso (2011): 548 (listed) and Gasparini (2012): 15 (listed).

Diagnosis. The new species is assigned to Pseudopaludicola by its phylogenetic position and by the presence of a tubercle on the forearm, anterolateral processes of the hyoid absent, posterolateral processes of hyoid reduced, and epicoracoid cartilages slightly superposed. The new species is characterized by: (1) SVL 11.7–14.6 mm in males, 14.0–16.7 mm in females; (2) body slender; (3) fingertips knobbed with a central groove; (4) hindlimbs short; (5) abdominal fold complete; (6) arytenoid cartilages wide; (7) prepollex with base and two segments; (8) prehallux with base and one segment; (9) frontoparietal fontanelle partially exposed; (10) advertisement call with one note, composed of two isolated pulses per call; (11) dominant frequency ranging from 4380–4884 Hz; 12) diploid chromosome number of 22; and 13) Ag-NORs on 8q subterminal.

....

Etymology. The word “restinga” has an unclear origin in Brazilian Portuguese, but it is the proper name of the vegetation near the sea where the new species occurs: the restingas. Apparently, “res” comes from Latin, meaning “thing” and “tinga” comes from the Tupi indigenous language, meaning “white”, probably an allusion to the clear sandy soil of this formation. Here, restinga is used as a noun in apposition.

Distribution. Pseudopaludicola restinga sp. nov. is known from six municipalities in Espírito Santo State, Brazil (Fig. 9): Serra (type locality), Guarapari, Presidente Kennedy, Vitória (Reserva Ecológica Municipal Mata Paludosa), Vila Velha (Morada Interlagos and Vale Encantado lagoon), and Itapemirim (Lagoa das Sete Pontas or Lagoa Guanandy).

Natural history notes and conservation insights. This species can be found between dunes or at the borders of lagoons in wet or flooded places, mostly after rainfall events. The individuals were found vocalizing on the mud during the day. In addition, in the rainy season males also call in the evening and night. The restingas belong to the Atlantic Forest biome, a global biodiversity “hotspot” (Myers et al., 2000). In the restingas, the plants form paludous or herbaceous forests, but the constant disturbance of this habitat, induced by man, has led to the loss of most of their original area (Rocha et al., 2003). In concordance with the economic expansion of Brazil from 2000 to 2014, multiple infrastructure projects were developed on coastal areas of Espírito Santo, particularly port activity, and oil and gas exploitation. As a consequence, multiple pristine areas have been severely affected, including Restinga de Praia das Neves. The presence of a new anuran species in the restingas along the coastal areas of Espírito Santo contributes to the knowledge of the richness of vertebrate biodiversity of this fragile ecosystem, which requires conservation policies capable of maintaining and preserving the biological heritage of the region and of the country.
