 Abstract

 A new species of potamid crab of the genus Terrapotamon Ng, 1986, is described from karst forests in Satun, Peninsular Thailand. Terrapotamon thungwa n. sp. has very long ambulatory legs and superficially resembles T. longitarsus, the only other long-legged species in the genus. They can easily be distinguished by life colouration, carapace features, as well as structures of the epistome, male thoracic sternum, cheliped and male first gonopod.

Etymology. The name is derived from the type locality at Amphoe Thung Wa. The name is used as a noun in apposition. 

Remarks. The long ambulatory legs of T. thungwa n. sp. is a character shared only by one other species of Terrapotamon,T. longitarsus Lheknim & Ng, 2016, also from the Satun area in Peninsular Thailand. It is surprising to find two similar species occurring in the same area, but the differences between the two species are very marked and leave no doubt they are separate taxa. Terrapotamon thungwa can most easily be separated in its bright red overall coloration in life (Figs. 1, 8A) (purple in T. longitarsus; Fig. 6); ....

Habitat. All the specimens of Terrapotamon thungwa were obtained from the karst landscape of Satun. From the material collected, it would appear that the area and habitat where T. thungwa occurs overlaps with T. longitarsus. Both species were found inside and outside the caves as well as in the karst forest. In the dark zone inside the cave, adults of T. thungwa were observed climbing on the cave walls (Fig. 8B, C), with a small specimen observed in a pool on the cave floor (Fig. 9A, B). Up to five specimens have been observed on the cave floor. Adult males of both two species were observed in rock pools at the bottom of deep crevices in the karst forest, while a small specimen of T. longitarsus were seen at a sheltered rock pool near the cave entrance (Fig. 9C, D). The crabs use these collected pools to replenish their gill chambers.

Abstract

 Two new terrestrial crab species of the family Potamidae, Tiwaripotamon xuanson and T. hamyen, are described from northern Vietnam. Tiwaripotamon xuanson was collected from Xuan Son National Park, Thanh Son district, Phu Tho province, and T. hamyen was found in Binh Xa commune, Ham Yen district, Tuyen Quang province. They can be distinguished from other congeners by distinct carapace characteristics and gonopod 1 structures.

Type species: Geothelphusa annamensis Balss, 1914, by original designation

Tiwaripotamon xuanson, new species

Etymology. The new species is named after the type locality, Xuan Son National Park. The name is used as a noun in apposition. 

Live colouration. Carapace reddish, chela and ambulatory legs red. 

Ecological notes. This species inhabits limestone mountains far from water bodies, on the forest floor. One specimen was found in a fallen dead tree (Fig. 5). The other specimens were found in rock cavities and under leaf litter.

Tiwaripotamon hamyen, new species 

Etymology. The new species is named after the type locality, Ham Yen. The name is used as a noun in apposition. 

Live colouration. Carapace and chela milky to light gray, ambulatory legs vary from milky to light gray or purple mixed light orange (Fig. 8A–D).

Ecological notes. This species inhabits limestone mountains. Our observation of this species and other Tiwaripotamon species from Vietnam confirm that they have terrestrial habits. They were often found far from water sources like streams and ponds. We observed a female T. edostilus carrying juveniles walking on the forest floor not close to any water body. It means these juveniles did not develop in streams or ponds.

Abstract

A new genus Arquatopotamon gen. n. of the family Potamidae Ortmann, 1896, is established and a new species, Arquatopotamon jizushanense sp. n. from Yunnan Province, China is described. The new genus is established based on the distinctive distal part of the male first gonopod, with arched-shaped subterminal and terminal segments (in mesioventral view) and female gonopores (vulvae) on thoracic sternites 5/6 and a combination of characters including the carapace and male telson, while it is similar to the five known genera in Yunnan Province and adjacent area, Tenuipotamon Dai, 1990, Pararanguna Dai & Chen, 1985, Trichopotamon Dai & Chen, 1985, Potamiscus Alcock, 1909 and Aparapotamon Dai & Chen, 1985, in having a third maxilliped exopod without a flagellum. Present molecular data based on a barcoding marker of 16S rDNA provide strong support for the genus as being new.

Etymology. The genus name is derived from the Latin arquatus for “arched”, which describes the arched male first gonopod of the type species for the genus. Potamon is the type genus of the family Potamidae. Gender neuter.

Arquatopotamon jizushanense sp. n. 

Distribution and habitat. Arquatopotamon jizushanense gen. n., sp. n. was found under stones in small hill streams in ...village, Jizushan Town, Binchuan County, Dali City in Yunnan Province, China; at an altitude of 1778 m. No other potamids were observed at the type locality. 

Live coloration. Carapace is usually dark brown, whereas chelipeds and ambulatory legs are reddish brown to purple in life. 

Etymology. Arquatopotamon jizushanense gen. n., sp. n. is named after the type locality, Jizushan Town in Yunnan Province, China.

Abstract
A new species of semi-terrestrial crab of the family Potamidae, Rathbunamon chumomrayense sp. nov. is described from Chu Mom Ray National Park, the Central Highlands of Vietnam. The new species can be distinguished from R. lacunifer (Rathbun, 1904), the only other species in the genus, by a suite of characters, including the slightly more rugose anterolateral regions, confluent epigastric and postorbital cristae that are sinuous, less convex anterolateral margins, relatively shorter fingers of the chelipeds, and the terminal segment of the male first gonopod being slightly curved outwards, with narrower dorsal flap.

Introduction

 The freshwater crabs of Vietnam are currently represented by 52 species, belonging to two families, Potamidae Ortmann, 1896 and Gecarcinucidae Rathbun, 1904 (Dang & Ho, 2012; Dang, Thai, & Pham, 1980; V.T. Do, 2014; V. T. Do, Le, & Nguyen, 2016; V. T. Do, Le, & Phan, 2015; V. T. Do, Shih, & Huang, 2016; Naruse, Nguyen Xuan, & Yeo, 2011; Ng & Yeo, 2001; Yeo & Ng, 1998; Yeo & Ng, 2007). Rathbunamon is a monotypic genus established by Ng (1996) with R. lacunifer (Rathbun, 1904) as the type species. A recent survey in the Central Highlands of Vietnam obtained two specimens which are here identified as a second species from this genus. The new species possesses the main generic characteristics of Rathbunamon. It appears to have a highly localized distribution and can be distinguished from its congener by a suite of morphological characteristics.

Ecological notes. This species inhabits forested mountain areas. The larger specimen was found running around on the forest floor, far from the stream; however, the smaller specimen was found near the stream. It is believed that this species spends most of their time in the terrestrial environment

Abstract

A new species of terrestrial potamid crab, Terrapotamon longitarsus, is described from limestone hills in Satun Province in southern Thailand. It is easily distinguished from other Terrapotamon species by its conspicuously long ambulatory legs (all congeners have proportionately short legs), relatively smooth dorsal surface of carapace, transversely narrow male thoracic sternites 1–4, and a characteristically structured male first gonopod.

Abstract

A new species of potamid freshwater crab, Himalayapotamon garhwalense n. sp., is described from a stream near Khanda in Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, India. The new species is differentiated from all congeners by a suite of carapace and gonopod features, including the short, stout and conical G1 terminal joint with gradually tapered distal portion. Himalayapotamon Pretzmann, 1966, is now represented by 11 species including H. garhwalense n. sp. An identification key to the species in the genus is provided.

Abstract

A new species of freshwater crab of the genus Teretamon Yeo & Ng, 2007 is described based on material collected from a limestone cave state of Meghalaya, in the northeastern Himalayan region of India. Teretamon spelaeum n. sp. can easily be distinguished from its congeners by a well suite of carapace and gonopod characters: a relatively wider carapace, setose chelipeds and legs, a highly reduced cornea of the eye, and a diagnostic male first gonopod that has a low rounded median dorsal flap on the terminal joint. The morphology of the new species is clearly adapted for the cave dwelling and is the first true troglobitic freshwater crab known from India.

Teretamon spelaeum n. sp.

Etymology. The name refers to the habitat of this species, derived from the Latin, spelaeum, meaning cave. The name is used as a noun in apposition.

 Geographical distribution. Teretamon spelaeum is known only from the type locality, the Krem khung cave of Meghalaya state of India.

Abstract

A new species of potamid crab of the genus Teretamon Yeo & Ng, 2007, is described from Namdapha Tiger Reserve in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh, India. The new species, Teretamon kempi n. sp., can be distinguished from its congeners by a distinct combination of carapace and gonopod characters: a relatively high carapace with a bilobed frontal margin; subquadrate sixth abdominal somite with nearly parallel lateral margins; and a relatively small G1 terminal segment with a semicircular to bluntly triangular dorsal flap. All known Teretamon species are compared with the new species, and a key for this genus is provided.

Etymology. The new species is named after Stanley W. Kemp (1882–1945), former Superintendent of the Zoological Survey of India, for his valuable work on Indian carcinology, particularly that of Arunachal Pradesh, formerly known as Abor country (Kemp, 1913).
