Abstract

A new species of Begonia (Begoniaceae), Begonia namkadingensis, is described. This species was collected on moist mossy limestone rocks in the Nam Kading National Protected Area in central Laos during our field survey in 2017. The species resembles B. pteridiformis, which is endemic to Peninsular Thailand, but can be distinguished by its smaller habit, fewer and smaller leaves, less hairy stems and leaves, narrower inner dorsal tepal of pistillate flowers, fewer stamens, and smaller fruits.

Abstract

Following a taxonomic revision of Begonia L. (Begoniaceae, Cucurbitales) from Northeast India based on 332 herbarium specimens, 38 species are confirmed to occur in the region, of which ten are endemic. One new species is described, Begonia koelzii R.Camfield sp. nov., in B. sect. Platycentrum (Klotzsch) A.DC. One species is reduced into synonymy; B. barbata Wall. is now a synonym of B. thomsonii A.DC. Three species, B. difformis (Irmsch.) W.C.Leong, C.I Peng & K.F.Chung, B. labordei H.Lév. and B. handelii Irmsch., are reported new for India, and B. lushaiensis C.E.C.Fisch. is reinstated as an accepted species, having previously been synonymised under B. modestiflora Kurz. A key to the species in the region and preliminary conservation assessments are presented.

Begonia koelzii R.Camfield sp. nov. [sect. Platycentrum]

 Diagnosis:  Similar to B. macrotoma Irmsch. (1951: 41) in having lacerate leaves, but differs in having a larger lamina (20–40 cm long, not 12–15 cm) and female flowers with 4–6 (not 3) tepals.

Etymology: The epithet honours Walter N. Koelz (1895–1989), the American zoologist who collected the type.

Distribution and phenology: Endemic to the Arakan Mountain Range, usually found growing on cliff faces; 1000–2100 m.

Conservation status Data Deficient: The full distribution of B. koelzii in the Arakan mountains is unknown

Abstract

The world’s smallest Begonia, Begonia elachista Moonlight & Tebbitt sp. nov., is described and illustrated from a limestone outcrop in the Amazonian lowlands of Pasco Region, Peru. It is placed within the newly described, monotypic Begonia sect. Microtuberosa Moonlight & Tebbitt sect. nov. and the phylogenetic affinities of the section are examined. Begonia elachista sp. nov. is considered Critically Endangered under the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria.

Begonia sect. Microtuberosa Moonlight & Tebbitt sect. nov.

 Diagnosis: Begonia sect. Microtuberosa sect. nov. is most closely related to B. sect. Trachelocarpus and three species of B. sect. Gaerdtia. Both of these sections are endemic to eastern Brazil and differ markedly from sect. Microtuberosa sect. nov. in both their habit and floral characteristics (see Table 1). However, all three sections share their filaments fused at least at the base and B. sect. Microtuberosa sect. nov. further shares its androecium morphology with B. sect. Pereira and its lack of bracteoles with B. sect. Trachelocarpus. The majority of both floral and vegetative characters are, however, markedly different among the three sections.

Begonia sect. Microtuberosa sect. nov. is readily identified as the only Neotropical section of Begonia with male flowers with four or fewer stamens, and the combination of ovaries with two or three locules and entire placentas, and a tuberous habit.

Etymology: The name ‘Microtuberosa’ emphasises the diminutive and tuberous habit of the type species. 

Type species: Begonia elachista Moonlight & Tebbitt sp. nov. 

Distribution: On a limestone outcrop in lowland Amazonian Peru to the east of the Chemillén Cordillera at an altitude of 430 m.

Begonia elachista Moonlight & Tebbitt sp. nov. sect. Microtuberosa

Diagnosis: Begonia elachista sp. nov. is a highly distinct species with an unusual combination of features that is easily recognized as the only Peruvian species of Begonia that reaches maturity at fewer than 5 cm in height. It is also unique within Peru in having ovate leaves smaller than 3 × 3 cm and a combination of entire placentae and a tuberous habit.

Etymology: The epithet ‘elachista’ comes from the Greek for ‘least’ and emphasizes the diminutive size of this species, which is the smallest known species of Begonia.

Distribution and habitat: Begonia elachista sp. nov. is known only from the type locality in the Peruvian region of Pasco (Oxapampa Province) and has been collected on calcareous rocks by the entrance to a cave within primary lowland Amazonian forest, at an altitude of 430 m. It was observed growing on rocks free from other vascular plants in association with various bryophyte species in the almost continual shade of the surrounding forest.

 Abstract

Background

A new species, Begonia myanmarica, was discovered from Myanmar and herein documented. Characterized by a single developed wing in the ovary/fruit, this species would be assigned to sect. Monopteron (sensu Doorenbos et al. in The sections of Begonia including descriptions, keys and species lists: studies in Begoniaceae VI. Wageningen Agricultural University, Wageningen, 1998) that is known by B. griffithiana and B. nepalensis from the Himalaya. To confirm its sectional assignment, we conducted morphological, phylogenetic and cytological studies.

Results

Morphological observations indicated that B. myanmarica was distinguishable from the two known species of sect. Monopteron by the leaf shape and size, 1-locular ovary, parietal placentation and chromosome number. Molecular phylogenetic analysis using nrITS sequences showed that B. myanmarica was not allied with the clade of sect. Monopteron, though both were nested within sect. Platycentrum-sect. Sphenanthera clade.

Conclusions

Studies of morphology, molecular phylogenetics and cytology support the recognition of the new species, Begonia myanmarica, which is fully described and illustrated. Our results also indicate that B. myanmarica is not closely related to species previously assigned to sect. Monopteron, suggesting that the fruit morphology of a single developed wing in the ovary/fruit characterizing sect. Monopteron is homoplasious.

Diagnosis: Begonia myanmarica is a unique species with an erect habit; large, ovate to broadly ovate leaves (ca. 20–40 cm long, 22–30 mm across); sole, much protruded wing in ovary/fruit; 1-locular ovary with parietal placentation and 2 placentae; and the somatic chromosomes are determined as 2n = 38.

Etymology: The epithet refers to Myanmar (formerly Burma) where it was discovered.

Conclusion:

Begonia fulgurata, a new species from northern Thailand, is here described and illustrated. Begonia fulgurata resembles B. integrifolia, a widespread species in Southeast Asia, in having tubers, erect stem with hairy leaves and a periodically dormant habit. However, the new species is sharply distinct in its lamina densely hirsute (vs sparsely puberulous) and with maroon patches and silvery white veins (vs uniformly green or with white spots); inflorescence densely clothed with glandular hairs (vs glabrous or puberulous); staminate flowers with 2, rarely 3 (vs 4) tepals; staminate and pistillate tepals glandular hairy (vs glabrous). As a deciduous species with basal tubers, together with an erect stem, ovate to broadly ovate leaves, 3-locular ovary, it may be mistaken as a dwarf plant of B. grandis, one of the most widely distributed species in China and the type species of sect. Diploclinium. However, B. fulgurata differs in its leaf upper side with fine silvery (vs green) veins; inflorescence densely glandular hairy (vs glabrous), staminate tepals 2 or rarely 3 (vs 4) and pistillate tepals 5 (vs 3), and ovary glandular hairy (vs glabrous).

 Introduction 

Currently 54 species of Begonia are recognized in Thailand (Phutthai & Hughes 2016). Many are tuberous and periodically dormant during the dry season, such as some members in sect. Diplocinium, Parvibegonia, Reichenheimia, Heeringia and Monophyllon. All of these species have axile placentae and many were discovered recently, e.g., Doorenbos et al. (1998), Phutthai & Sridith (2010), Phutthai et al. (2014), Phutthai & Hughes (2016). Here we report the discovery of a handsome new species, B. fulgurata, from northern Thailand with partial parietal placentation, which resemble some Begonia sect. Coelocentrum, a relatively large group now of over 70 species (Chung et al. 2014, Peng et al. 2014, 2015a, b) occurring on karst limestone in southern China and northern Vietnam. Members of sect. Coelocentrum are evergreen, stemless rhizomatous, and produce axillary inflorescences and unequally winged fruits. The new species, however, does not fit in sect. Coelocentrum because of its tuberous habit, periodically dormant and erect stems and apical inflorescence and subequal wings. Its overall appearance appears to be allied to sect. Diploclinium. We provide a detailed morphological description, a line drawing and a colour plate to aid in identification of this new species.

Begonia fulgurata C.-I Peng, C.W. Lin & Phutthai, sp. nov.

 Type. Thailand, Chiang Mai Province, Doi Lohn (Lahn), west side, ..., Huay Gayo Subdistrict, Mae Awn District. Sterile specimen collected on 23 Oct. 2005, ....Type specimens pressed from plants brought back for cultivation in the experimental greenhouse of Academia Sinica, 26 Aug. 2008 (holo HAST; iso BKF).

Etymology. The specific epithet fulgurata is derived from the fine, silvery-white venation on the leaf upper surface, which resembles lightning.

[Botany • 2017] Begonia exposita, B. pengchingii, B. phutthaii & B. pseudosubperfoliata • Four New Species of Begonia (Begoniaceae) from Thailand ---ScRaBBlE

Abstract

Four new species of Begonia are described from Northern, Peninsular and Southwestern Thailand. Three belong to Begonia sect. Diploclinium (Begonia exposita Phutthai & M.Hughes, Begonia pengchingii Phutthai & M.Hughes and Begonia pseudosubperfoliata Phutthai & M.Hughes), and one (Begonia phutthaii M.Hughes) to Begonia sect. Apterobegonia . All four species are karst limestone endemics. The provisional IUCN status of all the new species is ‘Vulnerable’.

The habit resembles that of Begonia putii Craib, B. discreta Craib and B. soluta Craib in terms of the small number of cordate leaves arising directly from a tuber. Begonia putii and B. soluta differ in being smaller plants, .....

Begonia pengchingii Phutthai & M.Hughes, Habit and habitat 

• Begonia pengchingii Phutthai & M.Hughes sp. nov. Sect. Diploclinium. 

 A distinct species, closest to Begonia discreta in having 1 or 2 elongate-cordate symmetrical or subsymmetrical leaves and inflorescence arising from the tuber. ....

 Type: Thailand, Chiang Rai, Mae Sai District. On limestone cliff face in deep shade of summit cliff, 1350 m, .... (holo HAST; iso BKF, E).

ส้มกุ้งเมืองเหนือ Begonia pengchingii Phutthai & M. Hughes พืชถิ่นเดียวของประเทศไทย พบที่ภูเขาหินปูนในจังหวัดเชียงรายและเชียงใหม่ ตั้งชื่อให้เป็นเกียรติแก่ผู้ที่เก็บตัวอย่างนี้เป็นครั้งแรก

Begonia phutthaii M.Hughes, Habit, habitat and inflorescence 

• Begonia phutthaii M.Hughes sp. nov. Sect. Apterobegonia. 

Differs from the allied Begonia delicatula in having caducous (not persistent) stipules, a denser indumentum over all vegetative parts (B. delicatula has glabrous stems, not densely hairy, and leaves with scattered, not dense hairs). .... 

 Type: Thailand, Mae Hong Son, Pang Ma Pha District, Road between Pai and Pang Ma Pha. On vertical limestone in deep shade of dry evergreen forest on limestone, .... (holo E; iso BKF, SING).  

• Begonia pseudosubperfoliata Phutthai & M.Hughes sp. nov. Sect. Diploclinium. 

Resembles Begonia subperfoliata Parish ex Kurz in habit but differs in having 5 tepals in the female flowers (not 2) and glabrous lanceolate bracts (not deeply dissected and papillose). Also similar to Begonia rabilii Craib in habit but differs in having 5 tepals in the female flowers (not 4), and leaves with a more deeply crenate margin.

[Botany • 2017] A Revision and Recircumscription of Begonia Section Pilderia including One New Species, Begonia tepuiensis ---ScRaBBlE

Begonia tepuiensis Moonlight & Jara

Abstract

Novel phylogenetic data is used to show that the poorly-known species Begonia glandulifera and Begonia mariannensis form a clade with Begonia buddleiifolia, the type species of Begonia section Pilderia. A unique combination of characters is identified in this group and used to re-circumscribe the section to include these species, and two morphologically similar species: Begonia jenmanii, and Begonia humilliana. A new species is described herein as Begonia tepuiensis sp. nov. from a single tepui in the Amazonas State of Venezuela. A full taxonomic revision and key to the species of Begonia section Pilderia is presented and we assign all species to IUCN Red List categories.

Etymology:— The genus Begonia is relatively poorly known from the tepuis of northern Amazonia. We name this species B. tepuiensis as it is only the third Begonia species described exclusively from tepuis after B. steyermarkii L.B.Sm. & B.G.Schub and B. nubicola L.B.Sm. & B.G.Schub.

Resumen: Se usaron nuevos datos filogenéticos para mostrar que las especies pobremente conocidas: Begonia glandulifera y Begonia mariannensis forman un clado con Begonia buddleiifolia, la especie tipo de Begonia sección Pilderia. Se identificaron una combinación única de caracteres en este grupo, que fueron usados para re-circunscribir la sección incluyendo estas especies, y dos especies morfológicamente similares: Begonia jenmanii y Begonia humilliana. Se describe una nueva especie, Begonia tepuiensis sp. nov. de un tepui en el estado Amazonas de Venezuela. Se presenta también una revisión taxonómica completa y una clave para las especies de Begonia sección Pilderia y asignamos todas las especies a categorías de la Lista Roja de la UICN.

Abstract

Begonia nosymangabensis Scherber. & Duruiss. and Begonia pteridoides Scherber. & Duruiss. are described and illustrated. Both new species belong to Begonia sect. Erminea A. DC. Begonia nosymangabensis is compared to Begonia keraudreniae Bosser, from which it differs in having larger and more deeply incised leaves which lack adaxial hairs. Begonia pteridoides is related to Begonia bogneri Ziesenh. but differs by its very divided leaves. Both new species are micro-endemics, restricted to Nosy Mangabe island in northeast Madagascar and are assessed as “Vulnerable” according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Résumé: Begonia nosymangabensis Scherber. & Duruiss. et Begonia pteridoides Scherber. & Duruiss. sont décrits et illustrés. Les deux nouvelles espèces appartiennent au genre Begonia sect. Erminea A. DC. Begonia nosymangabensis se rapproche de Begonia keraudreniae Bosser, dont il diffère par ses feuilles plus grandes et plus profondément incisées et l'absence de poils à la face adaxiale. Begonia pteridoides est apparenté à Begonia bogneri Ziesenh., mais en diffère par ses feuilles très divisées. Les deux nouvelles espèces sont des micro-endémiques, restreintes à l'île de Nosy Mangabe au nord-est de Madagascar et sont considérées comme «Vulnérables» selon les Catégories et Critères de la Liste Rouge de l'UICN.
