Abstract

A new species of Spectracanthicus is described from the Rio Javaés, Rio Araguaia basin. The new species is distinguished from its congeners (except Spectracanthicus immaculatus) by colour pattern: body dark grey to dark brown without dots or blotches (v. body colour with yellowish small dots in Spectracanthicus murinus, Spectracanthicus punctatissimus and Spectracanthicus tocantinensis and large white dots in Spectracanthicus zuanoni). It can be further distinguished from S. immaculatus by having thicker and less numerous teeth, with up to eight premaxillary and 20 dentary teeth (v. teeth thinner and more numerous with up to 22 premaxillary and 30 dentary teeth); dorsal and caudal fins without curved spines (v. dorsal and caudal fins with curved spines). Other osteological characters can also diagnose the new species from its congeners. In addition, a gross brain description and brief comments on the new species' ecological habitat are given.

Spectracanthicus javae sp. nov.

Etymology: The specific epithet (a noun in apposition) is in reference to the Javaé people, an indigenous branch of the Karajá people in Brazil who inhabit the Ilha do Bananal and confer the name of the river (Rio Javaés), where the new species was reported.

Abstract

A new species of Hyphessobrycon from the upper Rio Tapajós basin, in the Tapajós–Juruena ecoregion, is described. Hyphessobrycon pinnistriatus n. sp. is distinguished from its congeners by having a black, oblique stripe extending from the origin of the second branched ray to the distal end of the third branched anal-fin ray, lacking a conspicuous black midlateral stripe on the body, inner premaxillary teeth with up to seven cusps, and fins normally hyaline or with scattered chromatophores. The description of a new species that is restricted to the Tapajós–Juruena ecoregion is consistent with this region being an area of high endemism of freshwater fishes.

Hyphessobrycon pinnistriatus new species

Diagnosis: Hyphessobrycon pinnistriatus differs from all congeners by having a black, oblique stripe that is largely parallels and covers the second and third anal-fin rays (Fig. 1), extending from the origin of the second branched ray to the distal end of the third branched anal-fin ray (v. anal fin hyaline, with uniformly distributed chromatophores, or margin blackish in all other species of Hyphessobrycon). Additionally, the new species can be distinguished from other congeners by lacking a conspicuous black midlateral stripe on the body, inner premaxillary teeth with up to seven cusps and from Hemigrammus unilineatus (Gill 1858), a non-congener but similar species, by having 20–23 branched anal-fin rays (v. 24–25), maxilla with two or three tetra to heptacuspidad maxillary teeth (v. three to seven tricuspidad maxillary teeth) and caudal fin lacking scales (v. caudal-fin lobes scaled).

Etymology: The species name is a combination of the Latin pinna, meaning fin and striatus, meaning stripe and is in reference to the black stripe on its anal fin. An adjective in apposition.

Ecological notes: The type locality of Hyphessobrycon pinnistriatus is a second order stream (sensu Strahler, 1957), known as an igarapé, surrounded by secondary forest in regeneration. The bottom of the stream is mainly composed of silt, with litter on the margins and few branches and trunks of a diameter greater than 10 cm. In the pools, there is flocculant sediment that is easily disturbed from submerged litter and macrophytes were found at sites with a little more water flow (Fig. 6). Most individuals of H. pinnistriatus were only observed in more lentic environments, swimming in small schools of five to 20 individuals. Individuals were also observed swimming alone and together with other species of Characidae, such as Moenkhausia phaeonota Fink 1979 and Hyphessobrycon heliacus Moreira, Landim & Costa 2002 near igarapé margins with depth ranging from 20 to 40 cm. Individuals were sometimes also observed foraging among the submerged litter in the igarapé margins (F. G. Cabeceira, pers. obs.). This species has also been found in habitats with faster water, no vegetation and substrata consisting of sand and mud.

Abstract

The examination of material representing one of Lake Tanganyika's six previously recognized endemic catfish lineages, has revealed the presence of an additional genus of clariid, described here as Pseudotanganikallabes new genus. This genus is represented by a single species, Pseudotanganikallabes prognatha sp. nov., which is distinguished from all other clariids by its lack of an infraorbital series, the presence of multiple osseous connections between the swim bladder capsules and elements of the neurocranium, the absence of an ethmoid notch, the presence of a very large, egg-shaped occipital fontanelle and the extension of the lower lip beyond the margin of the upper jaw. A combination of additional external and molecular characters serves to further distinguish this taxon from all currently recognized clariid species. Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial (cytb) and nuclear (18S-ITS1-5.8S-ITS2-28S) sequence data supports the creation of a new genus for this species, as it appears to represent an independent, monophyletic lineage within the family Clariidae.

Etymology: From the Greek pseudo (𝜓𝜀𝜐𝛿ή𝜍), meaning lying or false and the genus Tanganikallabes, in reference to the superficial resemblance between these two genera. Gender: feminine.

Geographical distribution: All known specimens referred to Pseudotanganikallabes were collected on the southeast, Zambian coast of Lake Tanganyika.

PSEUDOTANGANIKALLABES PROGNATHA SP. NOV. 

Etymology: The specific epithet is derived from the prefix pro, in this case meaning anterior to and the Greek gnathos (𝛾ν΄𝛼𝜃o𝜍), meaning jaw, in reference to the distinctive protrusion of the lower jaw of this species. Gender: feminine.

Distribution: Currently known from localities along the southeastern coast of Lake Tanganyika: .... East of Mpulungu.

Abstract

A new species of Hyphessobrycon is described from the Rio Juma, a tributary of the lower Rio Aripuanã–Rio Madeira basin, Amazonas, Brazil. Hyphessobrycon platyodus can be distinguished from its congeners by the: presence of an elongated dorsal fin in adult males, 25–28 branched anal-fin rays and absence of dark blotches from the dorsal fin and caudal peduncle. The presence of multicuspid teeth in species of Characidae and its relation with feeding habits are briefly commented on.

Etymology: The specific epithet platyodus derives from the Greek, platy, flat; odon, tooth, in allusion to the compressed teeth with many cusps, an unusual feature in Hyphessobrycon.

Distribution: Hyphessobrycon platyodus is known only from Rio Juma drainage, upstream of the Paredão Waterfall, a tributary of the Rio Aripuanã, Rio Madeira basin, Apuí, Amazonas, Brazil.

Abstract

A new species of the gobiid genus Gobius (Gobiidae, Perciformes), Gobius incognitus sp. nov. is described from the Mediterranean Sea, and its most morphologically similar species Gobius bucchichi is redescribed. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by: scales in lateral series 51–59; predorsal scales 25–35; opercle scaled in adults with 10–16 scales present; pectoral fin with ray count 18–20 and free tips on upper rays well developed and on the first ray longer than two thirds of the entire ray length; pelvic disc complete and with well-developed anterior membrane without lateral lobes; anterior oculoscapular canal with pore α at rear of orbit; oculoscapular row x1 not extending forwards to pore β; suborbital row d discontinuous with large gap below suborbital rows 3 and 4; eye diameter 1·08–1·32 in snout length; by pigment rows on cheek and pigmentation on pectoral-fin base.

Diagnosis: Gobius incognitus sp. nov. is unique among species of Gobius by the following combination of characteristics: (1) LL 51–59; (2) PD 25–35; (3) opercle scaled in adults with 10–16 scales present; (4) P count 18–20; (5) free tips on upper P rays well developed and the first ray longer than two thirds of the entire ray length; (6) V disc complete; (7) V disc anterior membrane without lateral lobes; (8) anterior oculoscapular canal with pore α at rear of orbit; (9) oculoscapular row x1 not extending forwards to pore β; (10) suborbital row d discontinuous with large gap below suborbital rows 3 and 4; (11) eye diameter 1·08–1·32 in snout length; (12) the pigment dots on cheek irregularly scattered or, if rows are visible, then additional dots or a third row present across the middle of the cheek between the lower row starting anteriorly at the angle of mouth and the upper row that touches ventral margin of eye; (13) the upper mark on the P base single or doubled, reaching downwards to eighth to 10th rays counting from the upper part of fin.

Etymology: The species name is from the Latin incognitus meaning unknown in reference to the long period of time that passed until this common and widespread species was recognized and described.

Ecological and geographical distribution: The species was collected in the north, middle and south Adriatic Sea, in the north-western Mediterranean in France, Banyuls-sur-Mer and in the eastern Mediterranean at Crete Island and in Israel (Fig. 3).

Abstract

The new sand goby species Pomatoschistus nanus (Teleostei: Gobiidae) is described from the northern coast of the Levantine Sea (eastern Mediterranean Sea) based on both morphological and DNA barcoding data. The new species is the smallest fish in the Mediterranean Sea and may be distinguished from congeners by the following features: predorsal area, first dorsal-fin base and breast naked; δ-pore missing; anterior point of the suborbital row b not reaching level of posterior point of suborbital row d; slightly emarginated caudal fin and nape coloration pattern. DNA barcode data clearly discriminate Pomatoschistus spp. in the neighbour-joining tree with an average of 17·7% interspecific K2P distance. The most closely related taxon to P. nanus sp. nov. is Pomatoschistus bathi and the most distantly related is Pomatoschistus tortonesei with 11·9 and 21·9% K2P distances respectively. Morphometric and genetic data are also provided for Pomatoschistus bathi.

Abstract

Hyphessobrycon myrmex sp. nov., is described from the Rio Formiga, upper Rio Juruena, upper Rio Tapajós basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from congeners by having the lower half of the body deeply pigmented with dark chromatophores, chromatophores concentrated above the anal fin and forming a broad, diffuse, dark midlateral stripe and by having a dense concentration of dark chromatophores along unbranched dorsal-fin rays and distal portions of the two or three subsequent branched rays. In life, H. myrmex exhibits a conspicuous sexual dichromatism, with adult males red to orange and females and immatures pale yellow. A list containing 108 sexually dichromatic taxa in six families of Characiformes is provided and the distribution of this poorly known type of dimorphism across the Characiformes is discussed.

Hyphessobrycon myrmex

Etymology: The specific epithet myrmex is derived from the Greek word for ant, in allusion to the small size of adult specimens of the species and also refers to the type locality, the Rio Formiga, which means ‘Ant River’ in Portuguese.

Abstract

A new species of Astyanax is described from the upper Rio Paraguai basin, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from congeners by having the body intensely yellowish in life (v. silvery, reddish or lightly yellow) and by morphometric and meristics traits. Astyanax dolinae n. sp. cannot be assigned to any of the Astyanax species complex currently recognized for the genus. It is only known from the Dolina Água Milagrosa, a karstic sinkhole lake, entirely fed by groundwater, surrounded by Cerrado, the savannah-like vegetation of central South America.
