Abstract
 The genus Stumpffia Boettger, 1881 currently contains 15 named, small to miniaturized frog species, classified in the endemic Malagasy subfamily Cophylinae of the family Microhylidae. Stumpffia are terrestrial frogs with a largely unknown biology, probably due to their small size and secretive habits. Previous studies have suggested a large proportion of undescribed diversity in the genus. We revise the genus on the basis of a combination of molecular, bioacoustic, and morphological data and describe 26 new species that are all genetically divergent, almost all of them with high pairwise genetic divergences > 4% p-distance in a segment of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene and concordant differentiation in a segment of the nuclear Rag-1 gene. The majority of the new species can also be distinguished by the structure of their advertisement calls (where bioacoustic data are available), and in most comparisons the species can also be distinguished morphologically. Furthermore, a molecular phylogeny reconstructed from DNA sequences of one nuclear and four mitochondrial gene segments revealed that in many cases, morphologically similar species are not each other’s closest relatives, thus confirming their identity as independent evolutionary lineages and revealing repeated phenotypic divergence and convergence among and within clades. The phylogeny distinguishes four main clades in the genus: Clade A containing 17 species (Stumpffia be, S. hara, S. megsoni, S. staffordi, S. psologlossa, S. analamaina, S. gimmeli, S. madagascariensis, S. pygmaea, S. angeluci sp. nov.S. huwei sp. nov., S. iharana sp. nov.S. larinki sp. nov., S. maledicta sp. nov., S. mamitika sp. nov.S. sorata sp. nov., and S. yanniki sp. nov.) mostly from northern and northwestern Madagascar, generally characterized by limited digital reduction and divided in subclades of comparatively large, small, and miniaturized body size, respectively; Clade B with four species (S. mieryS. meikeae sp. nov.S. obscoena sp. nov., and S. davidattenboroughi sp. nov.) morphologically ranging from miniaturized with strong digital reduction to comparatively large-sized; Clade C with 18 species (S. grandis, S. kibomena, S. roseifemoralis, S. tetradactyla, S. nigrorubra sp. nov.S. achillei sp. nov.S. diutissima sp. nov.S. pardus sp. nov., S. edmondsi sp. nov., S. fusca sp. nov., S. jeannoeli sp. nov., S. spandei sp. nov., S. garraffoi sp. nov., S. analanjirofo sp. nov., S. miovaova sp. nov., S. makira sp. nov., S. betampona sp. nov., and S. dolchi sp. nov.) mostly distributed in eastern and northeastern Madagascar, containing species of comparatively large size as well as small-sized species, many of which are characterized by a moderate degree of digital reduction; and Clade D with two miniaturized species (S. tridactyla and S. contumelia sp. nov.) with strong digital reduction, which form the sister group of all other Stumpffia. Two of the newly described species (S. angeluci and S. maledicta) are not separated by the 4% threshold in the 16S gene but occur in sympatry and do not share Rag-1 haplotypes. To achieve a comprehensive review of this species-rich genus, we provide simplified differential diagnoses and descriptions and abbreviated descriptions of morphological variation. Despite the large number of Stumpffia species newly described herein, we identify several additional candidate species with currently insufficient data to warrant formal description, and highlight that some species such as S. analanjirofo, S. gimmeli, S. kibomena, S. madagascariensis, S. roseifemoralis and S. obscoena are composed of two or more deep mitochondrial lineages that might also turn out to be distinct taxa after in-depth study. We confirm Stumpffia as a genus of highly microendemic frogs with many species apparently restricted to very small ranges, and provide evidence that two of the new species (S. achillei and S. davidattenboroughi) do not construct foam nests but lay their eggs in wet places in the leaf litter, or in cavities such as empty snail shells. We propose a conservation status for all the described species according to IUCN Red List Criteria, but also discuss several problems applying these criteria to such microendemic and poorly known frogs.

Abstract
Calumma guibei (Hillenius, 1959) is a high-altitude chameleon species from the Tsaratanana massif in north Madagascar. Since its description was based on a juvenile holotype, its taxonomic identity is uncertain and little is known about its morphology. A recent molecular study discovered several deep mitochondrial clades in the Tsaratanana region assigned to C. guibei and C. linotum (Müller, 1924). In this paper we study the taxonomy of these clades and clarify the identity of C. guibei. Using an integrative taxonomic approach including pholidosis, morphological measurements, osteology, and molecular genetics we redescribe C. guibei and describe the new species C. gehringi sp. nov. which comprises two deep mitochondrial lineages. In terms of external morphology the new species differs from C. guibei by an elevated rostral crest, the shape of the notch between the occipital lobes (slightly connected vs. completely separated), presence of a dorsal and caudal crest in males (vs. absence), and a longer rostral appendage in the females. Additionally, we analysed skull and hemipenis morphology using micro-X-ray computed tomography (micro-CT) scans and discovered further differences in skull osteology, including a large frontoparietal fenestra, and separated prefrontal fontanelle and naris in C. guibei. Furthermore, we provide a comparison of micro-CT scans with traditional radiographs of the skull. The hemipenes have ornaments of two pairs of long pointed cornucula gemina (new term), two pairs of dentulous rotulae, and a pair of three-lobed rotulae, and are similar in both species, but significantly different from other species in the C. nasutum group. Geographically, C. guibei has been recorded reliably from the higher elevations of the Tsaratanana Massif above 1580 m a.s.l., whereas C. gehringi sp. nov. is found at mid-altitude (730-1540 m a.s.l.) in Tsaratanana and the surrounding area.

Calumma gehringi sp. nov.  

Diagnosis. Calumma gehringi sp. nov. is a member of the phenetic C. nasutum group (Prötzel et al., 2016), because of the presence of a soft, dermal, unpaired rostral appendage, absence of gular or ventral crest and heterogeneous scalation at the lower arm, consisting mostly of tubercles of large diameter (0.4–0.9 mm). Within the genus it is a small-sized, grey to greenish chameleon (SVL 44.7 – 55.5 mm, TL 92.6–123.6 mm) that is characterized by a large rostral appendage of green or blue colour in males and yellow in females when unstressed, occipital lobes that are clearly notched but usually still slightly connected, distinctly elevated rostral crest, absence of axillary pits, presence of a dorsal crest in males, and a unique skull morphology. .....

Available names. Apart from C. guibei there is no other valid species or synonym in the Calumma nasutum group with deeply notched occipital lobes.

Etymology. We dedicate the new species to Philip Sebastian Gehring. His comprehensive molecular phylogenetic study on the Calumma nasutum group was the basis for the description of the new species, and will be instrumental to the resolution of the rest of this complex. The species epithet ‘gehringi’ is a patronym in the Latin genitive form.

Abstract

 Channa shingon, new species, is described from small mountainous rivulets associated with the Irrawaddy drainage in western Yunnan Province, China. Its maximum SL of about 100 mm makes it the smallest pelvic-fin bearing dwarf snakehead. Further specific characters are lateral head length 27–30 % SL; interorbital width 33 –35 % HL; 25–27 anal-fin rays; 44–45 lateral-line scales; 4 –5 scale rows between dorsal-fin origin and lateral line; 8 –9 scale rows between lateral line and anal-fin origin; 1 mandibular scale; 43–44 vertebrae; inferomesial process of parasphenoid very shallow and straight; dorsal profile conspicuously bulging in front of dorsal fin; juveniles without ocellus-like mark on posterior part of dorsal fin; and a pectoral-fin pattern of 3 – 4 broad gray to black bands alternating with cream to white interspaces, bands increasingly wide towards distal edge of the fin, interspaces equally wide as bands or narrower.

Diagnosis. Channa shingon is distinguished from other members of the C. gachua-complex (Britz, 2008) by having a lateral head length 27–30 % SL; interorbital width 33 – 35 % HL; 25–27 [26] anal-fin rays; 44– 45 [45] lateral-line scales; 4 –5 [4] transverse scales to dorsal-fin origin and 8–9 [8] to anal-fin origin; 1 mandibular scale, 43 –44 [44] vertebrae; inferomesial process of parasphenoid very shallow and straight; dorsal profile conspicuously bulging in front of dorsal fin; pelvic fin present; juveniles without ocellus-like mark on posterior part of dorsal fin; a pectoral-fin pattern of 3–4 broad gray to black bands alternating with cream to white interspaces, width of bands increasing towards distal edge of the fin, interspaces equally wide as bands or narrower; and a maximum standard length of about 100 mm.

Distribution. Known from the Irrawaddy and Salween drainages in Dehong and Lincang prefectures, Yunnan, China; expected to occur in the same drainages in Myanmar.

 Ecology. Channa shingon prefers weedy, stagnant water sections of small mountainous rivulets. These rivulets are often redirected to irrigate rice paddies. At the type locality, the ankle-deep water was clear, with a pH of 5.9, a conductivity of 20 µS/cm, and a temperature of 12 ºC in the afternoon. The lower reaches of these rivulets, shortly before the influx into a larger stream are usually also inhabited by Misgurnus anguillicaudatus and juveniles of C. harcourtbutleri. Another habitat of C. shingon, the Mengnaihe River upstream of Xima at an elevation of 1730 m, had a water temperature of just 8 ºC in the morning (pH 6.7; 20 µS/cm); some backwaters had a thin layer of ice after a chilly night. Vast areas of C. shingon’s habitats are ephemeral and desiccate during droughts.

Etymology. The specific epithet is derived from a character in Burmese spiritualism. Shingon, also referred to as Lady Humpback, is one of the 37 officially recognized spirits (nats) in Myanmar; an allusion to the species’ humpbacked appearance; a noun in apposition.

Abstract 
Channa stiktos, a new species of snakehead fish, is described from the River Kaladan and its tributaries, Mizoram, North Eastern India based on comparison of morphological and molecular features with closely related species. Channa stiktos is morphologically similar to C. ornatipinnis described from the Rakhine State of Myanmar, however, differs from it in having black spots on dorsal and ventral sides of the head (vs. no spots on dorsal and ventral sides of the head, but rather spots restricted to the post-orbital lateral region of the head), and lacking dark spot on the anal fin of juveniles (vs. presence of series of upto 10 dark spots). The molecular analysis, based on cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences, shows that C. stiktos is distinct from other close Channa species, except clade 3 of C. ornatipinnis, available in the GenBank (interspecies distance ranges from 8.24–25.33%). Channa stiktos clustered cohesively with clade 3 of C. ornatipinnis (only 1.43% genetic distance) indicating that they are conspecific. The genetic distance between Channa stiktos and C. ornatipinnis (from the type locality and another locality in the Ayeyarwaddy basin) are 8.24–8.59%, and between C. stiktos and C. pulchra is 12.92%, supporting the conclusion that they are different species.

Channa stiktos sp. nov.

Diagnosis. Channa stiktos is distinguished from all other species of Channa, except C. ornatipinnis, C. pulchra, C. pardalis, C. melanostigma and C. stewartii, by a unique colour pattern consisting of numerous large, black spots on the head and the body. Channa stiktos is distinguished from C. ornatipinnis in having black spots on dorsal and ventral sides of the head (vs. no spots on dorsal and ventral sides of the head, but rather spots restricted to the post-orbital lateral region of the head), and absence of dark spot on the anal fin of juveniles (vs. presence of series of up to 10 dark spots).
It can be distinguished from Channa pulchra in having black spots on the body well distributed above and below the lateral line (vs. sparsely distributed or absent on the body below the lateral line); from C. pardalis in having black spots all over the head (vs. spots restricted to post-orbital region of the head); and from both C. stewartii and C. melanostigma in having well defined black spots on the head (vs. spots on the head absent, and restricted to the body).

Etymology. The specific epithet ‘stiktos’ meaning ‘spotted’ in Greek, referring to the numerous conspicuous spots present on the body. It is use as an adjective.

 Distribution and habitat. Channa stiktos was collected from the Ianava, Niawh and Tiau Rivers of the Kaladan River drainage, Mizoram, North Eastern India (Fig. 3). The streams were clear, slow flowing with cobble substrate and no aquatic vegetation (Fig. 4).

 Abstract 
A new species of frog of the genus Hyloxalus from a high Andean forest of the central parts of the Cordillera Oriental, Colombia is recognized and described using integrative taxonomy. Using phylogenetic analyses of 2590 base pairs (bp) of mitochondrial DNA, Hyloxalus felixcoperari sp. nov. was shown to belong to a lineage of the subpunctatus clade, part of a subgroup that comprises high altitude-occurring lineages (subgroup I) and sister taxa of H. subpunctatus sensu stricto from the Bogotá plateau region. The genetic distance between both taxa is 2.1% and 5.1% for the 16S and cytochrome b gene fragments respectively. Hyloxalus felixcoperari sp. nov. is a medium-sized frog, which can be distinguished morphologically from H. subpunctatus by having dark throat and chest and unwebbed toes, and bioacoustically by emitting an advertisement call consisting of trill-like calls repeated at a rate of 50 –104 repititions/min, with a dominant frequency ranging from 3028.9–3861.2 Hz. Molecular dating analysis revealed that the already known lineages of the subpunctatus clade subgroup I from the middle Cordillera Oriental of Colombia, recently diverged during the lower Pleistocene – Upper Pliocene, most probably due to environmental fluctuations. Threats and main aspects of the natural history of this new species including breeding and habitat are reported in this article.

Hyloxalus felixcoperari sp. nov.

Diagnosis  A species of Hyloxalus characterized by (1) SVL of adult males between 20.3–20.8 mm (20.6±0.2, n=3), and adult females between 21.4– 23.8 mm (22.4±1.2, n=3); (2) disc on Finger III not expanded, the width of the adjacent phalange between 72.9 –96.4% of disc; (3) when adpressed, Finger I equal or slightly shorter than Finger II; (4) fringe absent on the fingers; (5) disc on Toe IV slightly expanded, the width of the adjacent phalange between 63.2–75.4% of disc; (6) fringe absent on Toe IV and on other toes; (7) outer tarsal fold absent and inner tarsal fold, present and elongated tubercle-like; (8) toes unwebbed; (9) dorsolateral stripe absent; (10) oblique lateral stripe present, extending from groin to eye; (11) ventrolateral stripe absent; (12) throat, chest, and anterior part of the abdomen sexually dimorphic: in adult males, throat and chest dark and in adult females, cream with irregular spots or dark brown reticulations; (13) abdomen cream with brown reticulations in females (Fig. 7), in adult males it turns light brown with diffuse cream spots; (14) Finger III not swollen in males; (15) testes white; (16) adult males without black, pale or dark grey arm gland; (17) cloacal tubercles absent; (18) incomplete pupil ring; (19) the call with dominant frequency between 3028.9–3861.2 Hz.

Etymology. The specific epithet of this dendrobatid frog is dedicated to Felix Acosta-Gualtero (1935–2015), who dedicated his life to the consolidation of the solidarity economy (Cooperativism) in Colombia, based on principles of participation, reciprocity and cooperation.

Distribution. Hyloxalus felixcoperari sp. nov.is currently known only from the type locality at Natural Private Reserve Paso de Nubes, between 2500– 2577 m above sea level. The locality corresponds to a cloud Andean forest fragment located on the western slope of the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia (Fig. 1).

Abstract 
Lizards of the genus Eremiascincus Greer, 1979 include species from the Australian monsoonal tropics and the Lesser Sundas as well as a widespread radiation of banded forms from the Australian arid zone, some of which are ‘sand-swimmers.’ Here we describe a new, rusty red-coloured species of Eremiascincus from the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Unlike other EremiascincusEremiascincus rubiginosus sp. nov. is saxicolous and usually associated with deep gorges in the Hamersley Range. The new species differs morphologically from all other members of the genus by a combination of numerous mensural and scalation characters, including typically seven supralabials, three pairs of chin shields, a moderate-sized elliptical ear opening, smooth scales on dorsum and dorsal surface of tail lacking longitudinal ridges, scales on dorsal surface of fourth toe arranged in multiple rows with oblique sutures with only the terminal 1–4 single scales possessing transverse sutures, 24 –31 subdigital lamellae under fourth toe that are grooved and bluntly callused, 10–13 plantar scales from heel to base of third toe and dark brownish-black calli on scales of palmar and plantar surfaces. Colouration and pattern are also unique in the genus, with a rich rusty red background colour on dorsum and tail, 17–24 narrow irregular bands on nape and dorsum that are at most a single scale wide and > 40 narrow bands on tail. The new species is the seventh Eremiascincus from Western Australia and also the sixth narrow-banded species in the genus.

Eremiascincus rubiginosus new species

Diagnosis. A moderate-sized Eremiascincus (adult SVL 60 –82 mm) with usually seven supralabials (rarely six or eight), three pairs of chin shields, a moderate-sized elliptical ear opening (Fig. 3A), smooth dorsal scales on dorsum and tail lacking longitudinal ridges (Fig. 1A & B, Fig. 2A), scales on dorsal surface of fourth toe arranged in multiple rows with oblique sutures with only the terminal 1 –4 scales single, possessing transverse sutures, 24 –31 subdigital lamellae under fourth toe that are grooved and bluntly callused, 10– 13 plantar scales from heel to base of third toe and dark brownish-black calli on scales of palmar and plantar surfaces (Fig. 3D); background colour of dorsum and tail rich rusty red in live specimens, 17 –24 narrow irregular dark bands on nape and dorsum that are at most a single scale wide and > 40 transverse narrow dark bands on original tail (Figs. 1A & B, Fig. 2A, Fig. 4).

Habitat. Specimens of E. rubiginosus sp. nov. throughout the species’ range have been collected in gorges, rocky gullies, riverbeds or caves surrounded by woodland. The species appears to be largely restricted to rocky habitats and may be encountered in leaf litter covering rock formations or under rock ledges (see Fig. 1E).

Etymology. The specific name is based on the Latin adjective rubiginosus (rusty red). As common names we suggest ‘Rusty skinks’ (English) and ‘Rost-Skink’ (German).

Discussion: 

The description of Eremiascincus rubiginosus brings the number of described Eremiascincus species to 15. Most of these show a strong fidelity to certain habitat types and substrates (Mecke et al. 2013; pers. obs.). Eremiascincus rubiginosus is a typical species from the rocky country of the Pilbara, in that it is associated with gorges, rocky gullies, riverbeds and caves in the Hamersley Range, and exhibits a rich reddish colouration as is common for many species of animals from this region. In contrast, E. musivus and E. pallidus are sand-swimmers that readily will burrow into loose sand, with both only occurring along the sandy coastline of the Pilbara and the adjacent sandy deserts. While E. rubiginosus and E. musivus do not occur together, E. rubiginosus and E. pallidus may be encountered in sympatry in the Onslow area (Fig. 5). 

Morphologically, E. rubiginosus shares many characters with other narrow-banded Eremiascincus from the Australian arid zone, all of which are sand-swimmers. The saxicoline habitat preferences of Erubiginosus are intriguing, because it is the first narrow-banded species of Eremiascincus to have a strong association with rocky habitats and possesses characters (bluntly callused palmar and plantar scales, callused lamellae) that may be an adaption for rock climbing, similar to the saxicoline species Cryptoblepharus ustulatus Horner, 2007 from the same general area in the Hamersley Range. It is likely that Erubiginosus has evolved from an E. pallidus-like ancestor, such that the microhabitat of sand in gorges was a bridging habitat for the evolution of a more derived habitat preference of a gorge-dwelling lizard. Morphology in the genus Eremiascincus, however, may be of limited value to elucidate phylogenetic relationships, and former phenetic groupings (e.g., Greer 1979, 1989) have not been supported by molecular phylogenetic approaches (Reeder 2003; Rabosky et al. 2007; Skinner 2007; Mecke et al. 2009; S.C. Donnellan & P. Doughty, unpublished data). Studies on the phylogenetic position and ecology of E. rubiginosus would be of interest.

 Kurzfassung Die Gattung Eremiascincus Greer, 1979 beinhaltet Arten der australischen Monsunwälder und der Kleinen Sundainseln sowie eine weitverbreitete Gruppe von Formen mit dorsalen Bändern, die die australischen Trockengebiete bewohnt und von denen einige Arten aufgrund ihrer Lebensweise als ‘Australische Sandfische’ bezeichnet werden. Wir beschreiben hier eine neue, rostrot gefärbte Art der Gattung Eremiascincus aus der Pilbara-Region in West Australien. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Arten der Gattung ist Eremiascincus rubiginosus sp. nov. felsbewohnend und lebt überwiegend in tiefen Schluchten in der Hamersley Range. Die neue Art unterscheidet sich morphologisch von allen anderen Arten der Gattung durch eine Kombination zahlreicher metrischer und meristischer Merkmale, wie typischerweise sieben Supralabialia, drei paar Kinnschilden, einer mittelgroßen, elliptischen Ohröffnung, einer glatten dorsalen Rücken- und Schwanzbeschuppung, die keine längsorientierten Kiele aufweist, Schuppen auf der Dorsalseite der vierten Zehe bis auf die letzten 1–4 Schuppen in mehreren Reihen mit schrägverlaufenden Rändern, 24–31 gefurchte und mit Schwielen versehene Subdigitallamellen unter der vierten Zehe, 10–13 Plantarschuppen zwischen Ferse und Basis der dritten Zehe und dunkelgefärbten, braunschwarzen Schwielen auf den palmaren und plantaren Schuppen. Die Färbung und das Muster der neuen Art sind ebenfalls einzigartig innerhalb der Gattung und zeichnen sich durch eine satte rostrote dorsale Grundfarbe auf Rücken und Schwanz sowie 17 –24 schmale, irreguläre Bänder auf dem Rücken, die höchstens so breit sind wie eine Schuppenreihe, und > 40 Bänder auf dem Schwanz, aus. Eremiascincus rubiginosus sp. nov. ist die siebte Art der Gattung aus West Australien und die sechste Art mit schmalen Bändern.
