[Herpetology • 2017] Phylogenetic Systematics of Dart-Poison Frogs and Their Relatives Revisited (Anura: Dendrobatoidea) ---ScRaBBlE

Grant, Rada, Anganoy-Criollo, et al., 2017.
South American Journal of Herpetology. 12(s1)
 DOI:
 10.2994/SAJH-D-17-00017.1

Abstract
Despite the impressive growth of knowledge on the phylogenetic systematics of dart-poison frogs and their relatives (Dendrobatoidea) over the past decade, many problems remain to be addressed. We analyzed up to 189 phenomic characters (morphology, behavior, defensive chemicals) and 15 mitochondrial and nuclear loci scored for 564 dendrobatoid and outgroup terminals, including 76 newly sequenced terminals and > 20 previously unanalyzed species, using tree-alignment and the parsimony optimality criterion in the program POY v.5.1.1 and additional analyses of the implied alignment using TNT v.1.5. Even though data coverage was highly heterogeneous, the strict consensus of 639 optimal trees is highly resolved and we detected only one instance of wildcard behavior involving a small clade of outgroup species. The monophyly of the median lingual process (MLP) possessing genus Anomaloglossus is decisively refuted, with the cis-Andean species being sister to Rheobates within Aromobatidae and the trans-Andean species nested within Hyloxalinae, implying two independent origins of the structure in Dendrobatoidea. Although this result was unexpected, it is not surprising given that the MLP evolved at least five times in Asian and African ranoids, including Arthroleptidae, Dicroglossidae, Mantellidae, and Rhacophoridae and either once in the most recent common ancestor of the massive clade Victoranura followed by independent losses or multiple times within component lineages. We restrict Anomaloglossus to the cis-Andean MLP-possessing species, describe a new genus for the trans-Andean MLP-possessing species, and resurrect Paruwrobates for its sister group, which includes Dendrobates andinus (formerly Ameerega), D. erythromos (formerly Hyloxalus and, until recently, Ameerega), and Prostherapis whymperi (formerly Hyloxalus). We also transfer Dendrobates maculatus from Ameerega to Epipedobates, making Ameerega an exclusively cis-Andean group. We describe two new species of the trans-Andean MLP-possessing genus—one from Cerro Tacarcuna, near the Colombo-Panamanian border, and the other from 800–900 m elevation on the western versant of the Colombian Cordillera Occidental (Cauca Department)—bringing the total number of species in the genus to seven. The discrete, round, white to yellowish-brown dots found on the venter of the new species from Cerro Tacarcuna and at least one other trans-Andean MLP-possessing species are formed by large, ellipsoid, densely distributed (up to 80 glands/mm) granular glands. Although specimens of the new species from Cerro Tacarcuna exuded a noxious milky substance when handled, lipophilic alkaloids were not detected. In addition to the unexpected placement of the trans-Andean MLP-possessing species, major findings include the unexpected placement of Colostethus ruthveni and its undescribed sister species (the “C.” ruthveni group) within Dendrobatinae as sister of the newly recognized tribe Dendrobatini (all dendrobatines except Phyllobates and the “C.” ruthveni group). We describe a new genus for C. argyrogaster and C. fugax to remedy the paraphyly of Colostethus caused by the placement of those species as sister to Ameerega. Our evidence rejects the sister group relationship of Dendrobates + Oophaga in favor of Dendrobates + Adelphobates, which is consistent with their uniquely low diploid chromosome number of 2n = 18 (2n = 20 in Oophaga). With the exception of Anomaloglossus and Colostethus, all other genera are monophyletic. We recognize several monophyletic species groups—including the Atlantic Forest, trans-Andean, and 22-chromosome groups within Allobates, the An. stepheni, An. megacephalus, and An. beebei groups in Anomaloglossus, the C. latinasus (formed by the C. inguinalis and C. latinasus clades) and C. fraterdanieli groups within Colostethus, and the Am. braccata and Am. rubriventris groups within Ameerega—identify unambiguously optimized phenomic synapomorphies, and summarize patterns in the evolution of the diploid chromosome number, swelling of Finger IV in males, relative length of Fingers II and III, length of Finger V, and testicular and intestinal pigmentation. Finally, we address criticisms of the current taxonomy of Neotropical poison frogs and their relatives, concluding that they are either overstated, misguided, or false, and that the current system of names better communicates knowledge of the diversity of these frogs. Our results highlight the importance of increased taxon sampling, and we conclude by identifying key species to include in future phylogenetic analyses.

Type species. Ectopoglossus saxatilis sp. nov.
Immediately more inclusive taxon. Hyloxalinae Grant et al., 2006.
Sister group. Paruwrobates Bauer, 1994.

Content (7 species). Ectopoglossus absconditus sp. nov., Eastralogaster (Myers et al., 2012) comb. nov., Eatopoglossus (Grant et al., 1997) comb. nov., Econfusus (Myers and Grant, 2009) comb.  nov., Eisthminus (Myers et  al., 2012) comb.  nov., Elacrimosus (Myers, 1991) comb. nov., and Esaxatilis sp. nov.

Etymology. Ectopoglossus gen. nov. (gender masculine) is derived from the Greek ektopos, meaning away or out of a place (ek- “out”  + topos “place”), and glossa, meaning tongue, in reference to the geographically and phylogenetically ectopic distribution of this median lingual process-possessing clade.

Ectopoglossus absconditus sp. nov.

Etymology. The specific epithet is the Latin absconditus, hidden, in reference to this species being hidden in plain site, abscondita in campo visum, for nearly 80 years. The type specimens were collected in 1938 and 1939 and lay ensconced in the KU amphibian collection until finally being “discovered” almost 80 years later when TG examined the contents of a jar labeled “Colostethus  sp.” that contained this and several other species of dendrobatids. To our knowledge the species has not been collected again, although biological surveys in the region have been limited in recent decades due to armed conflict.

Ectopoglossus saxatilis sp. nov.
Etymology. The specific epithet is Latin and means “found among rocks” in reference to the streamside habitat of the species.

[Herpetology • 2017] Andinobates victimatus • A New Species of Andinobates (Anura: Dendrobatidae) from the Urabá region of Colombia ---ScRaBBlE

Andinobates victimatus
Márquez, Mejía-Vargas, Palacios-Rodríguez, Ramírez-Castañeda & Amézquita, 2017

Abstract

Northwestern South America is among the most biodiverse, albeit unexplored, regions of the world. The genus Andinobates is made up of 14 species, all distributed in Northwestern South America (Colombia and Northern Ecuador), and adjacent Panamá. Within the last decade, five species of this genus have been described. In this paper we describe yet another species, belonging to the Andinobates fulguritus group, from the Urabá region of Northwestern Colombia. The new species can be distinguished from other members of Andinobates on the basis of a unique combination of coloration, size, and advertisement call parameters. Molecular phylogenetic and genetic distance analyses corroborate the species’ taxonomic affinity, and further support its status as a distinct lineage. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings on the systematics of the A. fulguritus group.

Andinobates victimatus sp. nov.

Etymology. From the Latin victimatus  (the victimized); noun in apposition. The Urabá region, where this species occurs, has historically been flailed by Colombia’s longstanding armed conflicts, perhaps more than most other regions of the country, leaving a virtually countless trail of innocent victims. We name this species in honor and remembrance of all these victims.

[Herpetology • 2017] Ameerega munduruku • A New Species of Poison Frog, Genus Ameerega (Anura: Dendrobatidae), from the southern Amazonian Rain Forest ---ScRaBBlE

Ameerega munduruku
Neves, Silva, Akieda, Cabrera, Koroiva & Santana, 2017

 SALAMANDRA. 53(4); 485–493.

Abstract
A new species of poison frog in the Ameerega picta group is described from Amazonia, states of Pará and Mato Grosso. It inhabits rock outcrops in open areas near streams of the central Teles Pires River system. The new species differs from congeners by the combination of four characters: 24.87–28.59 mm adult SVL, black immaculate dorsum, white ventral side with black vermicular blotches, and an orange stripe in the axillar region. Genetically, the new species is most closely related to A. flavopicta

Key words. Amphibia, Anura, Dendrobatidae, Ameerega sp. n., A. picta group, systematics, taxonomy, Brazil.

Figure 3. Individual of Ameerega munduruku sp. n. in life from the type locality (non-collected specimen) in (a) dorsal and (b) ventral views.

Ameerega munduruku sp. n.

Diagnosis: The following characters diagnose the new species as a member of the genus Ameerega sensu Grant et al. (2006): colour in life aposematic; bright signal spot in the calf region present; light dorsolateral stripe present; light lateral stripe absent (the line visible from the lower lip to groin is an extension of the ventral coloration); presence of the lateral stripe dark; neopalatinae present; dorsal skin slightly granular; finger I > finger II when adpressed; webbing between toes absent; presence of dermal flap.

Life History: We found specimens of Ameerega munduruku sp. n. in Mato Grosso Seasonal Forest and Madeira-Tapajós Forest of the Amazon forest domain. Individuals inhabited rock outcrops near water bodies in glades within forested areas, using rocks on the floor as shelter. Additional individuals were observed inside the forest habitat. The new species is apparently common in the area, and is easily found on fallen trunks, in leaf litter and on rocks. Males were calling at 09:30 h perched on the herbaceous vegetation, ~ 30 cm above the ground. We found one male (not collected) carrying nine tadpoles on its dorsum during the wet season (November 2016). Allobates tapajos and Adenomera sp. were found sympatrically with A. munduruku sp. n.

Etymology: The specific epithet munduruku is a noun in apposition referring to the Munduruku ethnic group, which inhabits the southwestern parts of the state of Pará and the northern region of the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil.

Distribution: The new species is only known from the type locality (Jacareacanga Municipality, state of Pará) and one site ~ 70 km away on the other side of the Teles Pires River (Paranaíta Municipality, Mato Grosso State) (Fig. 5).

[Herpetology • 2018] Hyloxalus felixcoperari • A New Species of Hyloxalus (Anura: Dendrobatidae: Hyloxalinae) from A Cloud Forest near Bogotá, Colombia, with Comments on the subpunctatus clade ---ScRaBBlE

Hyloxalus felixcoperari  Acosta & Vargas, 2018

in Acosta-Galvis & Vargas-Ramírez, 2018.
  VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY.  68(2)

 Abstract
A new species of frog of the genus Hyloxalus from a high Andean forest of the central parts of the Cordillera Oriental, Colombia is recognized and described using integrative taxonomy. Using phylogenetic analyses of 2590 base pairs (bp) of mitochondrial DNA, Hyloxalus felixcoperari sp. nov. was shown to belong to a lineage of the subpunctatus clade, part of a subgroup that comprises high altitude-occurring lineages (subgroup I) and sister taxa of H. subpunctatus sensu stricto from the Bogotá plateau region. The genetic distance between both taxa is 2.1% and 5.1% for the 16S and cytochrome b gene fragments respectively. Hyloxalus felixcoperari sp. nov. is a medium-sized frog, which can be distinguished morphologically from H. subpunctatus by having dark throat and chest and unwebbed toes, and bioacoustically by emitting an advertisement call consisting of trill-like calls repeated at a rate of 50 –104 repititions/min, with a dominant frequency ranging from 3028.9–3861.2 Hz. Molecular dating analysis revealed that the already known lineages of the subpunctatus clade subgroup I from the middle Cordillera Oriental of Colombia, recently diverged during the lower Pleistocene – Upper Pliocene, most probably due to environmental fluctuations. Threats and main aspects of the natural history of this new species including breeding and habitat are reported in this article.

Key words Bioacoustics, Cordillera Oriental, high Andean, lower Pleistocene, mitochondrial DNA, recent radiation, upper Pliocene.

Hyloxalus felixcoperari sp. nov.

Diagnosis  A species of Hyloxalus characterized by (1) SVL of adult males between 20.3–20.8 mm (20.6±0.2, n=3), and adult females between 21.4– 23.8 mm (22.4±1.2, n=3); (2) disc on Finger III not expanded, the width of the adjacent phalange between 72.9 –96.4% of disc; (3) when adpressed, Finger I equal or slightly shorter than Finger II; (4) fringe absent on the fingers; (5) disc on Toe IV slightly expanded, the width of the adjacent phalange between 63.2–75.4% of disc; (6) fringe absent on Toe IV and on other toes; (7) outer tarsal fold absent and inner tarsal fold, present and elongated tubercle-like; (8) toes unwebbed; (9) dorsolateral stripe absent; (10) oblique lateral stripe present, extending from groin to eye; (11) ventrolateral stripe absent; (12) throat, chest, and anterior part of the abdomen sexually dimorphic: in adult males, throat and chest dark and in adult females, cream with irregular spots or dark brown reticulations; (13) abdomen cream with brown reticulations in females (Fig. 7), in adult males it turns light brown with diffuse cream spots; (14) Finger III not swollen in males; (15) testes white; (16) adult males without black, pale or dark grey arm gland; (17) cloacal tubercles absent; (18) incomplete pupil ring; (19) the call with dominant frequency between 3028.9–3861.2 Hz.

Fig. 13. upper: Lateral view of a female Hyloxalus felixcoperari sp. nov. carrying tadpoles in stage 26 (sensu Gosner, 1960) IAvH 14543 (SVL=21.4).
lower: Lateral, dorsal and ventral views of a tadpole IAvH 14544 in stage 27 in preservative.
Scale bars = 5 mm.

Etymology. The specific epithet of this dendrobatid frog is dedicated to Felix Acosta-Gualtero (1935–2015), who dedicated his life to the consolidation of the solidarity economy (Cooperativism) in Colombia, based on principles of participation, reciprocity and cooperation.

Distribution. Hyloxalus felixcoperari sp. nov.is currently known only from the type locality at Natural Private Reserve Paso de Nubes, between 2500– 2577 m above sea level. The locality corresponds to a cloud Andean forest fragment located on the western slope of the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia (Fig. 1).
