Abstract
The Jurassic Yanliao theropods have offered rare glimpses of the early paravian evolution and particularly of bird origins, but, with the exception of the bizarre scansoriopterygids, they have shown similar skeletal and integumentary morphologies. Here we report a distinctive new Yanliao theropod species bearing prominent lacrimal crests, bony ornaments previously known from more basal theropods. It shows longer arm and leg feathers than Anchiornis and tail feathers with asymmetrical vanes forming a tail surface area even larger than that in Archaeopteryx. Nanostructures, interpreted as melanosomes, are morphologically similar to organized, platelet-shaped organelles that produce bright iridescent colours in extant birds. The new species indicates the presence of bony ornaments, feather colour and flight-related features consistent with proposed rapid character evolution and significant diversity in signalling and locomotor strategies near bird origins.

[Paleontology • 2017] Albertavenator curriei • A New Species of Troodontid Theropod (Dinosauria: Maniraptora) from the Horseshoe Canyon Formation (Maastrichtian) of Alberta, Canada ---ScRaBBlE

Albertavenator curriei
Evans, Cullen, Larson & Rego, 2017

ABSTRACT

Troodontid material from the Maastrichtian of North America is extremely rare, beyond isolated teeth from microvertebrate sites. Here we describe troodontid frontals from the early Maastrichtian Horseshoe Canyon Formation (Horsethief Member). The most complete specimen, TMP 1993.105.0001, is notably foreshortened and robust when compared with numerous specimens referred to Troodon from the Dinosaur Park Formation, and exhibits several characteristics that distinguish it from other Late Cretaceous troodontids. Morphometric analyses reinforce shape differences between TMP 1993.105.0001 and other North American troodontids, and show that proportional differences are independent of size. We therefore erect a new taxonAlbertavenator curriei gen. et sp. nov., which is diagnosed by the following autapomorphies: (1) primary supraciliary foramen is truncated anteriorly by the lacrimal contact; (2) superficial (ectocranial) surface of the frontal proportionally shorter than all known troodontids, with a length to width ratio under 1.3; and (3) frontoparietal contact in which an enlarged lappet of the frontal extends medially to extensively overlap the lateral region of the anteromedial process of the parietal. Interestingly, tooth and jaw morphology from the single relatively complete dentary recovered from the Horseshoe Canyon cannot be distinguished from dentaries and teeth from the Dinosaur Park Formation. If the dentary and teeth from the Horsethief Member of the Horseshoe Canyon Formation prove to belong to A. curriei, extensive overlap in tooth morphology between the Dinosaur Park and Horseshoe Canyon formations reinforces the notion that tooth morphotypes do not exhibit strong correspondence to species alpha diversity, and may encompass multiple closely related taxa.

Abstract
Genuine fossils with exquisitely preserved plumage from the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous of northeastern China have recently revealed that bird-like theropod dinosaurs had long pennaceous feathers along their hindlimbs and may have used their four wings to glide or fly. Thus, it has been postulated that early bird flight might initially have involved four wings (Xu et al. Nature 421:335–340, 2003; Hu et al. Nature 461:640–643, 2009; Han et al. Nat Commun 5:4382, 2014). Here, we describe Serikornis sungei gen. et sp. nov., a new feathered theropod from the Tiaojishan Fm (Late Jurassic) of Liaoning Province, China. Its skeletal morphology suggests a ground-dwelling ecology with no flying adaptations. Our phylogenetic analysis places Serikornis, together with other Late Jurassic paravians from China, as a basal paravians, outside the Eumaniraptora clade. The tail of Serikornis is covered proximally by filaments and distally by slender rectrices. Thin symmetrical remiges lacking barbules are attached along its forelimbs and elongate hindlimb feathers extend up to its toes, suggesting that hindlimb remiges evolved in ground-dwelling maniraptorans before being co-opted to an arboreal lifestyle or flight.

[Paleontology • 2017] Daliansaurus liaoningensis • A New Troodontid Dinosaur from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation of Liaoning Province, China ---ScRaBBlE

Daliansaurus liaoningensis
Shen, Lü, Liu, Kundrát, Brusatte & Gao, 2017

Abstract
A new troodontid dinosaur, Daliansaurus liaoningensis gen. et sp. nov., is erected based on a nearly complete specimen from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation of Beipiao City, Liaoning Province, China. This well preserved skeleton provides important new details of the anatomy for Liaoning troodontids, and gives new insight into their phylogenetic relationships and evolution. Daliansaurus is distinguished from other troodontids by an enlarged ungual on pedal digit IV, which is approximately the same size as the sickle-shaped second ungual, and is differentiated from other Liaoning troodontids by a number of characters of the skull, manus, pelvis, and hindlimb. A phylogenetic analysis recovers Daliansaurus within a subclade of Liaoning troodontids that also includes SinovenatorSinusonasus, and Mei. We erect a name for this group — Sinovenatorinae — and argue that it reflects a localized radiation of small-bodied troodontids in the Early Cretaceous of eastern Asia, similar to previously recognized radiations of Liaoning dromaeosaurids and avialans. As more Liaoning theropods are discovered, it is becoming apparent that small, feathered paravians were particularly diverse during the Early Cretaceous, and future work is needed to clarify how this diversity arose, which species coexisted, and how these numerous species partitioned niches.

Key words: Troodontids, Daliansaurus liaoningensis, Early Cretaceous, Yixian Formation, Liaoning

Troodontidae Gilmore, 1924
 Sinovenatorinae subfamily nov.

Definition: The most inclusive clade including Sinovenator changii but not Troodon formosus, Saurornithoides mongoliensis, Anchiornis huxleyi, Archaeopteryx lithographica, Gallus gallus, Unenlagia comahuensis, or Dromaeosaurus albertensis

Diagnosis: Based on our phylogenetic analysis, this clade can be diagnosed with the following combination of characters (for further discussion, see below): a premaxilla whose anteroposterior length is less than 10% of the length of the maxilla along the ventral margin of the upper jaw; a premaxillary maxillary process that contacts the nasal ventral to the external naris; some maxillary and dentary teeth that lack serrations on the mesial carina; unfused zygapophyses on the sacral vertebrae; an antitrochanter that is posterodorsal to the acetabulum; and a metatarsal IV that is mediolaterally wide and flattened in cross section.

Included species: Based on our phylogenetic analysis, this clade currently includes Sinovenator changiiSinusonasus magnodensMei long, and Daliansaurus liaoningensis gen. et sp. nov.

Daliansaurus liaoningensis gen. et sp. nov.

Etymology: The generic name refers to the city of Dalian in the south of Liaoning province. The specific name “liaoningensis” refers to the province in which the specimen was discovered.

Locality and horizon: Lujiatun, Beipiao City, Liaoning Province; Yixian Formation, Lower Cretaceous.

Fig. 15. The living scene of Daliansaurus liaoningensis gen. et sp. nov. (DNHM D 2885) (drawn by Zhao Chuang)

Conclusions
It appears that small-bodied, feathered, winged paravian theropods from Liaoning—dromaeosaurids, avialans, and troodontids—were exceptionally diverse. Each group experienced its own local Early Cretaceous diversification, which produced a number of species that either coexisted or, perhaps more likely, replaced each other over time or partitioned niches and geographic ranges so that they did not extensively overlap in space. The discovery of Daliansaurus also demonstrates that Liaoning continues to produce new dinosaur taxa, and remains one of the world’s most productive sites for understanding paravian evolution, more than two decades after the first feathered dinosaurs were reported.

[Paleontology • 2017] Jianianhualong tengi • Mosaic Evolution in An Asymmetrically Feathered Troodontid Dinosaur with Transitional Features ---ScRaBBlE

Life reconstruction by Julius T. Csotonyi | DOI: 10.1038/ncomms14972

Abstract
Asymmetrical feathers have been associated with flight capability but are also found in species that do not fly, and their appearance was a major event in feather evolution. Among non-avialan theropods, they are only known in microraptorine dromaeosaurids. Here we report a new troodontid, Jianianhualong tengi gen. et sp. nov., from the Lower Cretaceous Jehol Group of China, that has anatomical features that are transitional between long-armed basal troodontids and derived short-armed ones, shedding new light on troodontid character evolution. It indicates that troodontid feathering is similar to Archaeopteryx in having large arm and leg feathers as well as frond-like tail feathering, confirming that these feathering characteristics were widely present among basal paravians. Most significantly, the taxon has the earliest known asymmetrical troodontid feathers, suggesting that feather asymmetry was ancestral to Paraves. This taxon also displays a mosaic distribution of characters like Sinusonasus, another troodontid with transitional anatomical features.
