Abstract

Species in the genus Ameles Burmeister and Pseudoyersinia Kirby (Amelini) are traditionally defined as small-sized, ground-dwelling mantids whose males are distinct for being, respectively, macropterous and brachypterous. However, comparative morphological studies across Amelini confirmed the existence of short-winged males in Ameles, suggesting that this traditional diagnostic concept does not apply to all species. Our analyses of several species from West Mediterranean localities (Canary Islands, Spain, Italy, and Morocco) resulted in the relocation of Pseudoyersinia andreae Galvagni, 1976 to Ameles as Ameles andreae (Galvagni, 1976) (n. comb.) with Ameles insularis Agabiti, Ippolito & Lombardo, 2010 as its new synonym (n. syn.), the clarification of the taxonomic identity of A. gracilis (Brullé, 1838) and A. maroccana Uvarov, 1931, including diagnoses of their males, and the description of Ameles spallanzania obscura (n. ssp.) (from Spain). We also take the opportunity to describe Pseudoyersinia maroccana (n. sp.) (from Morocco) based on museum specimens separating it from Ameles maroccana Uvarov, 1931. We also found that wing length is positively correlated to ocelli size. We discuss this trend from an ecological, evolutionary, and biogeographic perspectives to both facilitate species circumscription and justify the taxonomic modifications herein introduced.

Abstract

The Bornean Oxypilinae species previously included in the genus Hestiasula Saussure, 1871 are revised. External morphology and genital characters of Sundaian taxa differ considerably from the Indian type species H. brunneriana Saussure, 1871, necessitating taxonomic and nomenclatural changes. The genus Catestiasula Giglio-Tos, 1915 is reinstated. It is characterized by the apomorphic partial fusion of the dorsal and ventral laminae of the left phallomere, and by the complete reduction of the apical process. It is represented on Borneo with two species, C. nitida (Brunner de Wattenwyl, 1893) and C. moultoni Giglio-Tos, 1915. An additional species, C. seminigra (Zhang, 1992) n. comb. occurs in continental SE Asia. Two new genera are described, united by the lack of styli, the presence of dorsal carinae on the subgenital plate, and the unique morphology of the dorsal lamina of the left phallomere, but differing in the morphology of head and forelegs. Astyliasula gen. nov. accommodates A. phyllopus (De Haan, 1842) n. comb. and related species from the Sunda Islands and continental SE Asia: A. basinigra (Zhang, 1992) n. comb., A. hoffmanni (Tinkham, 1937) n. comb., A. javana (Beier, 1929) n. comb., A. major (Beier, 1929) n. comb., A. inermis (Wood-Mason, 1879) n. comb., and A. wuyshana (Yang & Wang, 1999) n. comb.. Hestias sarawaca Westwood, 1889 is removed from synonymy with A. phyllopus and reinstated as Astyliasula sarawaca (Westwood, 1889) n. comb.. The monotypic taxon Pseudohestiasula borneana gen. nov. sp. nov. is erected for a Bornean endemic more closely related to Astyliasula than to the other genera. Hestiasula is now restricted to H. brunneriana and related species from India and adjacent countries. The tribe Hestiasulini Giglio-Tos, 1915 stat. rev. is proposed for all genera more closely related to Hestiasula than to other Oxypilinae, that is Hestiasula, Ephestiasula, Catestiasula, Astyliasula, and Pseudohestiasula. New data on the ecology and distribution of all Bornean Hestiasulini as well as a key to the Oxypilinae of Borneo are provided.

Abstract

Two praying mantis specimens were collected on the island of Hiva Oa of the Marquesas Archipelago, an isolated island chain located approximately in the centre of the Pacific Ocean. While external morphological features agree with the diagnosis of the genus Tropidomantis, the unique combination of character states reveals that they represent a new species. Furthermore, this is the first record of a praying mantis collected in the Marquesas Archipelago. We describe the morphology of the species, illustrated by high resolution habitus images, figures of diagnostic features and measurement data for Tropidomantis kawaharai sp. nov.

[Entomology • 2018] Phasmomantella gen. nov. • A Spectacular New Genus of Praying Mantis (Mantodea, Mantidae, Deroplatyinae) from southern Central Vietnam; Phasmomantella nuichuana & P. pallida ---ScRaBBlE

Abstract. 

The new genus Phasmomantella gen. nov. is created to accommodate the new species Phasmomantella nuichuana gen. et sp. nov. described from five adult females from Núi Chúa National Park in southern Central Vietnam. A second species, Phasmomantella pallida (Roy, 2001) gen. et comb. nov., is transferred from Euchomenella where it was originally described based on a single male specimen from the Nha Trang region in the Khánh Hòa Province. Phasmomantella gen. nov. is placed in the tribe Euchomenellini of the subfamily Deroplatyinae. A comprehensive diagnosis and detailed descriptions are presented along with high-resolution photographs, measurements and a distribution map. The standardised measurements are illustrated and a new key is proposed for the tribe Euchomenellini. The unique biogeography and habitats of the collection site within Núi Chúa National Park are discussed in the light of possible endemism and importance for nature conservation.

Genus Phasmomantella gen. nov.

Etymology The genus name is formed by the combination of ‘Phasmo-’ (Latin: Phasma) meaning ‘ghost, apparition, spectre’, and referring to the Phasmatodea (stick insects) with which the new genus shares a slender and stick-like appearance, and ‘-mantella’ (Latin) which is the diminutive of ‘mantis’ The proposed genus name also indirectly refers to the unrelated South American genus Phasmomantis which is similar in general appearance. It is feminine in gender.

Phasmomantella nuichuana gen. et sp. nov.

Diagnosis Very large species with long and slender pronotum and relatively broad abdomen in females. Head broader than high with large globular eyes. Antennae filiform. Pronotum very finely denticulate along the margins, with more prominent teeth in the prozone, teeth fading away towards the posterior end of the metazone. Medial keel embedded in a longitudinal groove in the prozone but elevated in the metazone. Cervical region with two ventral sclerites. Profemora with four discoidal spines, 15 anteroventral spines and four posteroventral spines. Protibiae with 13 or 14 (rarely 15) anteroventral spines (most proximal spine usually much smaller than the others) and seven posteroventral spines. Tegmina cover about half the PPBL in females. Male unknown.

 Etymology The species epithet “nuichuana” refers to the original collection locality, Núi Chúa N.P. in southern Central Vietnam.  

Distribution Currently recorded only from Núi Chúa N.P. in Ninh Thuan Province, southern Central Vietnam (Fig. 6).

Phasmomantella pallida (Roy, 2001) gen. et comb. nov. 

Diagnosis Species with long and slender pronotum. Head broader than high, with large globular eyes. Antennae filiform. Pronotum entirely smooth along the margins. Medial keel embedded in a longitudinal groove in the prozone but elevated in the metazone. Profemora with four discoidal spines, 15 anteroventral spines and four posteroventral spines. Protibiae with 12 anteroventral spines and seven posteroventral spines. Tegmina and alae entirely hyaline, reaching apex of abdomen in males. Female unknown.

 Etymology The specific epithet ‘pallida’ was proposed by Roy (2001) when he described the species as Euchomenella pallida since the colouration of the type was uniformly beige and far more pale than in any other species belonging to that genus. By analogy with Phasmomantella nuichuana gen. et sp. nov., it is now clear that the live colouration is green, turning to beige when pigmentation is lost during conservation. 

Distribution Currently recorded only from Nha Trang in Khánh Hòa Province, southern Central Vietnam.
