Summary

Four new species of Peperomia (Piperaceae) from Thailand, namely Peperomia heptaphylla, Peperomia masuthoniana, Peperomia multisurcula and Peperomia sirindhorniana are described and illustrated. The reinstatement of Peperomia dindygulensis is also proposed with supporting morphological evidence.

Taxonomic Treatment

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the number of leaves per node.

Vernacular Name: เบี้ยประจวบ - Bia Pra Chuap.

• Peperomia masuthoniana Suwanph. & Chantar. sp. nov. 

Type: Thailand, Chiang Mai, Doi Chiangdao

Etymology: The specific epithet honours Associate Prof. Sumon Masuthon (1952 – present), Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Kasetsart University, who encouraged the first author to intensively study the family Piperaceae for the Flora of Thailand project.

Vernacular Name: เบี้ยเชียงดาว - Bia Chiang Dao.

• Peperomia multisurcula Suwanph. & Hodk. sp. nov. 

Type: Thailand, Nan

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to the stems that have many clumps, and many main stems and branchlets.

Vernacular Name: เบี้ยสะปัน - Bia Sa Pan (Nan).

• Peperomia sirindhorniana Suwanph. & Chantar., sp. nov. 

Type: Thailand, Loei, Nong Hin, Pha Hin Ngam

Conservation Status. This species is uncommon and only a few specimens have been collected from the border area between Loei and Khon Kaen provinces in northeastern Thailand. The populations are narrowly distributed in an area of karst limestone and not in a protected area. The populations are threatened by farming and deforestation. The status of Peperomia sirindhorniana is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR), according to IUCN (2011) criteria and the authors consider a category of B1b to be appropriate.

Etymology: The specific epithet honours to H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Mahidol who initiated the Plant Genetic Conservation Project to develop the personnel and plant genetics resources for the maintenance of plant varieties, and for the development to be advantageous for farmers and the business sector of Thailand.

Vernacular Name: Rak-Ta-Nil.

Notes:

 We discovered some unidentified specimens (T. Smitinand & H. Sleumer 1131 in BKF and L that were collected from Pha Nok Khao, Khon Kaen province, northeastern Thailand. They are similar to Peperomia pellucida in gross morphology but differ in some characters. We have subsequently collected living specimens from a nearby locality and they are easily recognised as a species new to science. The distinguishing characteristics of P. sirindhorniana are its red or reddish petioles and stems, and its bright to dark green leaves when fresh (subcoriaceous when dry) as opposed to pale green (membranous when dried) in P. pellucida. Furthermore, its fruits are larger than P. pellucida and are ovoid with a beaked apex formed from the style and it has densely acute papillae on the fruit surface.

Reinstatement

• Peperomia dindygulensis Miq.

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to Dindygul (the city in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu) from which the type specimens were collected.

Vernacular Name: ผักป้องแดง - Phak Pong Daeng (Chanthaburi).

ABSTRACT

 Zingiber sirindhorniae Triboun and Keerat., a new species from Thailand, is described and illustrated. It belongs to Zingiber section Dymczewiczia (Horan.) Benth. because of its terminal inflorescence which is rather rare in Zingiber.

Zingiber sirindhorniae Triboun and Keerat., sp. nov.

Diagnosis: Zingiber sirindhorniae belongs to Zingiber section Dymczewiczia (Horan.) Benth. due to the terminal infl orescence on the leafy shoot. It is most similar to Zingiber plicatum Škorničk. and Q.B. Nguyễ n in having terminal inflorescence and the limestone habitat, but they differ by the former having a short and small terminal inflorescence on a leafy stem and by the dark maroonish flowers.

Distribution. Endemic to Thailand. So far known only from Loei Province. 

 Ecology. In humus among rocks in partially shaded dry evergreen forest on limestone hills, alt. 350-450 m. 

 Phenology. Flowering in June to August and fruiting in July to October. 

 Etymology. The specific epithet honours Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn of Thailand who has taken a keen interest in the conservation of plants. Vernacular. Aiyarit (ไอยริศ), name given by Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn.

  

Notes. Four Thai species of Zingiber produce a terminal inflorescence; the inflorescence is always terminal in Z. pellitum Gagnep. and Z. gramineum Blume, while Z. barbatum Wall. and Z. junceum Gagnep. occasionally produce a terminal inflorescence. These four species are taller (to 1 m tall or taller) and are terrestrial, while Z. sirindhorniae is rather slender and small (40-70 cm tall), and grows in humus in crevices on limestone cliffs. In habit Zingiber sirindhorniae is more like Z. plicatum Škorničk. and Q.B. Nguyễn. The inflorescence of the new species is rather fragile and delicate.

Abstract 

     A new species, Flemingia sirindhorniae Mattapha, Chantar. & Suddee, from Tak province, Thailand, is described and illustrated, and its affinities are discussed. It is a very rare species in Thailand and its conservation status is assessed here as Data Deficient (DD).

Flemingia sirindhorniae Mattapha, Chantar. & Suddee, sp. nov.

 Type: Thailand, Tak province, Umphang district ...

  (holotype BKF; isotypes BK, BM, E, K, KKU, L, MBK, P, QBG).

This species stands out from F. involucrata Benth. and F. vestita Baker by its 1–3-digitately compound leaves, the presence of basal callosities on the standard, exserted corolla which is longer than the calyx, and by having a tubular floral disc.

Distribution.— Only known from the type locality. 

Ecology.— Limestone mountain, sometimes growing on steep limestone cliffs; alt. 900 m.
Phenology.— Flowering August– October; fruiting November–December.

Etymology.— The specific epithet is in honour of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand who has initiated the Plant Genetic Conservation Project under the Royal Initiative of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
Vernacular.— Thep-pa-mat (เทพมาศ) (name given by H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn).

Abstract

Oligoaeschna sirindhornae sp. nov. is described from a male from Sakaerat Silvicultural Research Station, Nakhon Ratchasima Province in Thailand. It is the only known Oligoaeschna species recorded from Thailand since Oligoaeschna pramoti (Yeh, 2000) and Oligoaeschna minuta (Hämäläinen & Pinratana, 1999) were transferred to the genus Sarasaeschna.

ABSTRACT

 Mimadiestra sirindhornae sp. nov. is described from Sakaerat Environmental Research Station, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Thailand. The new species is easily distinguished from M. biloba by the shape of the projection of male 7th abdominal tergite, by the shape of male paraprocts and by blackish brown body.

Thai Name. Takkatan Kuharat (ตั๊กแตนคูหารัตน์), name given by Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn. 

Habitats. The new species was collected at 350-450m altitude from leaves of a bush about 20-40 cm above ground.

Abstract

The most highly troglomorphic Collembola of Southeast Asia, Coecobrya sirindhornae sp. n., is described from a cave in Satun province, Thai Peninsula. It is characterised by its large size, extremely elongated antennae, relatively long legs and furca, reduced macrochaetotaxy, very long and slender claw, pointed tenent hair, four sublobal hairs on outer maxillary lobe, and the absence of eyes and pigmentation. A checklist of Thai Coecobrya species and a key to the troglomorphic species of Thailand are provided. Troglomorphy and conservation of cave habitats in the area are discussed.

Ecology: Coecobrya sirindhornae sp. n. is restricted to the dark zone of the cave where it has been found, in the oligotrophic environment of a small chamber, on muddy ground and wet rock walls. The chamber is connected to a narrow steep hole. Small puddles are present in the chamber and water is dripping from the ceiling. Muddy ground surface is flooded during rainy season. Some individuals were found feeding on a cricket corpse. They were quick jumping and moved rapidly. The species is found only in that chamber where humidity is at saturation, and temperature is constant (23‒24 degrees Celsius). The population seems rather limited (only 26 specimens were collected from five attempts, each time one hour collecting by 2 people). Small (young) individuals were less numerous and not collected.

Etymology: This species is named to honour Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who is passionately interested in natural history and plays an important role in promoting the conservation of biodiversity and the environment of Thailand.
