Summary

Four new species of Peperomia (Piperaceae) from Thailand, namely Peperomia heptaphylla, Peperomia masuthoniana, Peperomia multisurcula and Peperomia sirindhorniana are described and illustrated. The reinstatement of Peperomia dindygulensis is also proposed with supporting morphological evidence.

Taxonomic Treatment

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the number of leaves per node.

Vernacular Name: เบี้ยประจวบ - Bia Pra Chuap.

• Peperomia masuthoniana Suwanph. & Chantar. sp. nov. 

Type: Thailand, Chiang Mai, Doi Chiangdao

Etymology: The specific epithet honours Associate Prof. Sumon Masuthon (1952 – present), Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Kasetsart University, who encouraged the first author to intensively study the family Piperaceae for the Flora of Thailand project.

Vernacular Name: เบี้ยเชียงดาว - Bia Chiang Dao.

• Peperomia multisurcula Suwanph. & Hodk. sp. nov. 

Type: Thailand, Nan

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to the stems that have many clumps, and many main stems and branchlets.

Vernacular Name: เบี้ยสะปัน - Bia Sa Pan (Nan).

• Peperomia sirindhorniana Suwanph. & Chantar., sp. nov. 

Type: Thailand, Loei, Nong Hin, Pha Hin Ngam

Conservation Status. This species is uncommon and only a few specimens have been collected from the border area between Loei and Khon Kaen provinces in northeastern Thailand. The populations are narrowly distributed in an area of karst limestone and not in a protected area. The populations are threatened by farming and deforestation. The status of Peperomia sirindhorniana is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR), according to IUCN (2011) criteria and the authors consider a category of B1b to be appropriate.

Etymology: The specific epithet honours to H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Mahidol who initiated the Plant Genetic Conservation Project to develop the personnel and plant genetics resources for the maintenance of plant varieties, and for the development to be advantageous for farmers and the business sector of Thailand.

Vernacular Name: Rak-Ta-Nil.

Notes:

 We discovered some unidentified specimens (T. Smitinand & H. Sleumer 1131 in BKF and L that were collected from Pha Nok Khao, Khon Kaen province, northeastern Thailand. They are similar to Peperomia pellucida in gross morphology but differ in some characters. We have subsequently collected living specimens from a nearby locality and they are easily recognised as a species new to science. The distinguishing characteristics of P. sirindhorniana are its red or reddish petioles and stems, and its bright to dark green leaves when fresh (subcoriaceous when dry) as opposed to pale green (membranous when dried) in P. pellucida. Furthermore, its fruits are larger than P. pellucida and are ovoid with a beaked apex formed from the style and it has densely acute papillae on the fruit surface.

Reinstatement

• Peperomia dindygulensis Miq.

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to Dindygul (the city in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu) from which the type specimens were collected.

Vernacular Name: ผักป้องแดง - Phak Pong Daeng (Chanthaburi).

Abstract

Phanera larseniana, a new species from north–eastern Thailand, is described and illustrated.  It most closely resembles P. rubro-villosa but differs in the length of the floral parts, and in the number and position of the staminodes. The species is known only from a single locality in north-eastern Thailand. An illustration and photos of the new species are provided.

Phanera larseniana Chantaranothai, Mattapha & Wangwasit, sp. nov. 

Phanera larseniana is similar to P. rubro-villosa but differs in having a shorter hypanthium, smaller calyces and petals, longer fertile filaments, longer ovary and style. Fertile filaments and style are much exserted (vs. inserted in P. rubro-villosa).

Etymology:— The species is named after Supee Saksuwan Larsen and the late Professor Kai Larsen, prominent botanists who contributed the account of the genus Bauhinia to the Flora of Thailand. 

 Vernacular name:— Khruea Saksuwan (เครือศักดิ์สุวรรณ), "เสี้ยวกำมะหยี่".

Distribution:— Only known from north–eastern Thailand (Fig. 3). 

Habitat and Ecology:— Dry evergreen forest, elevation of ca. 200 m.

 Phenology:— Flowering March–April. Fruiting April–May.

ดร.คณิต แวงวาสิต รักษาการหัวหน้าสวนพฤกษศาสตร์ขอนแก่น เปิดเผยว่า สวนพฤกษศาสตร์ขอนแก่น ได้ดำเนินการศึกษาวิจัยและรวบรวมข้อมูลด้านพฤกษศาสตร์และความหลากหลายของพันธุ์พืช ในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ซึ่งในการดำเนินการดังกล่าว ได้ค้นพบพันธุ์ไม้ชนิดใหม่ของโลกเพิ่ม อีก 1 ชนิด มีลักษณะเป็นไม้เลื้อยที่มีเนื้อไม้ ดอกมีกลิ่นหอมอ่อน ๆ ออกดอกในช่วงเดือนมีนาคม - เมษายน ใบมีลักษณะคล้ายกับใบเสี้ยวฝักมีลักษณะมีขนนุ่มคล้ายกำมะหยี่ จึงเรียกชื่อง่ายๆ ว่า "เสี้ยวกำมะหยี่" โดยพบเพียงกลุ่มเดียว จำนวน 8 - 9 ต้น ที่บริเวณเทือกเขาภูพาน เมื่อปี 2542 ต่อมาได้ตั้งชื่อใหม่ว่า "เครือศักดิ์สุวรรณ” มีชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์ว่า Phanera larseniana Chantaranothai, Mattapha & Wangwasit เพื่อเป็นเกียรติให้แก่ ศาสตราจารย์ ไค ลาร์เซน (Professor Kai Larsen) นักพฤกษศาสตร์ชาวเดนมาร์ก ที่เป็นผู้ก่อตั้งโครงการพรรณพฤกษชาติแห่งประเทศไทย และภรรยา ทั้งนี้ ปัจจุบัน สวนพฤกษศาสตร์ขอนแก่น ได้รวบรวมต้นพันธุ์จากธรรมชาติซึ่งอยู่ในภาวะใกล้สูญพันธุ์มาเพาะขยายและปลูกลงแปลงที่สวนพฤกษศาสตร์ขอนแก่น เพื่อศึกษาวิจัยด้านพฤกษศาสตร์และต่อยอดในการใช้ประโยชน์ต่อไป

ABSTRACT

Phyllanthus kaweesakii Pornp., Chantar. & J.Parn. sp. nov. is newly described from the limestone mountain ridges in the northeast of Thailand. Comparison of morphology, anatomy, pollen morphology, and DNA sequences of this species with the most similar existing species P. mirabilis Müll.Arg. was undertaken. The results indicated that the two taxa are different in morphology, especially habit, stem base, and inflorescence, but that their pollen morphology and anatomy are similar. The molecular phylogenetic analysis, based on sequences of the plastid matK and nuclear ribosomal ITS regions, supported separation of the two taxa. This new species is described and illustrated, and its conservation status is discussed.

ลักษณะ เป็นพืชอวบน้ำ Succulent มีโขดลำต้นอวบอ้วนสะสมอาหาร ทนแล้งได้มาก มีลักษณะแตกต่างกับมะยมหินชนิดดั้งเดิม Phyllanthus mirabilis Müll.Arg. คือ จะกิ่งก้านเล็กและแตกกิ่งก้านเยอะกว่ามาก ใบมีขนาดเล็ก ทรงกลมมน มีคู่ใบน้อย 6-10 คู่ใบ ใบมีแว็กซ์สีเขียวอมฟ้าเล็กน้อย ออกดอกช่อสั้น ติดเมล็ดปลายยอด

Abstract 

     A new species, Flemingia sirindhorniae Mattapha, Chantar. & Suddee, from Tak province, Thailand, is described and illustrated, and its affinities are discussed. It is a very rare species in Thailand and its conservation status is assessed here as Data Deficient (DD).

Flemingia sirindhorniae Mattapha, Chantar. & Suddee, sp. nov.

 Type: Thailand, Tak province, Umphang district ...

  (holotype BKF; isotypes BK, BM, E, K, KKU, L, MBK, P, QBG).

This species stands out from F. involucrata Benth. and F. vestita Baker by its 1–3-digitately compound leaves, the presence of basal callosities on the standard, exserted corolla which is longer than the calyx, and by having a tubular floral disc.

Distribution.— Only known from the type locality. 

Ecology.— Limestone mountain, sometimes growing on steep limestone cliffs; alt. 900 m.
Phenology.— Flowering August– October; fruiting November–December.

Etymology.— The specific epithet is in honour of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand who has initiated the Plant Genetic Conservation Project under the Royal Initiative of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
Vernacular.— Thep-pa-mat (เทพมาศ) (name given by H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn).

ABSTRACT

Three species of Argostemma (Rubiaceae) are newly recorded for Lao PDR: A. ebracteolatum, A. pictum and A. verticillatum. Descriptions and photographs of the new records are provided, and a key to Argostemma in Lao PDR is presented.

INTRODUCTION

Argostemma Wall., a genus of Rubiaceae of ca 100 species in the Old World tropics, is largely confined to the South-East Asia (Robbrecht, 1988) but with two species in tropical West Africa (Sridith & Puff, 2000; Mabberley, 2008). For Lao PDR, Newman et al. (2007a) and Newman et al. (2007b) first recorded a species of the genus, A. laeve Benn., from Khammouan province. Lanorsavanh & Chantaranothai (2013, 2016) recorded three species A. laotica Lanors. & Chantar., A. neurocalyx Miq. and A. siamense Puff from Bolikhamxai province, and, most recently, Tagane et al. (2017) recorded an additional  species,  A.  lobbii Hook.f., from Bolikhamxai province.

During botanical surveys of the first author in northern Lao PDR, Luangphrabang Province in July 2014 with S. Souvanhnakhoummane, and Luangnamtha Province in August 2015 with C. Phongoudome and in the southern Attapeu Province in June 2014 with V. Lamxay, many unnamed specimens were collectedand identified and include new records for Lao PDR, viz Argostemma ebracteolatum E.T.Geddes, A. pictum Wall. and A. verticillatum Wall. In 1999, Sridith indicated the type specimens of A. ebracteolatum, A. pictum, A. pubescens, A. repens and A. rotundifolium were holotypes, but this is an error to be corrected to lectotypes, nevertheless the lectotypification was effectively done by him.

NEW RECORDS:

Type: Thailand, Chiang Mai, Mae Chaem (Me Cham), 14 Jul. 1922, Kerr 6276A (lectotype K! [K000760179], isolectotypes BK! [257307], BM! [BM000028695], designated by Sridith, 1999).

Ecology.— On limestone wet rock in mixed deciduous, deciduous and dry evergreen forests, 540–1,100 m alt.; flowering July and fruiting July to August.

Notes.— Argostemma ebracteolatum resembles A. thaithongae Sridith, endemic to Thailand, in the bell-shaped corolla and 5-merous flower, but differs in having not only being densely hairy on stem, leaves and inflorescence but also the exterior of the corolla. It is unlikely to be confused with other species in Laos as only A. neurocalyx has a bell-shaped corolla but is 4-merous.

Type: Malaysia, Penang, 1892, Wallich, Numer. List 8392 (lectotypeK! [K000172892]; isolectotypes K! [K000172894], K-W!  [K-W001125373]  designated  by  Sridith, 1999), non Korth., 1851.

Ecology.— On moist sandstone rocks with soil or on wet ground in evergreen forests, 100–410 m alt.; flowering June to July and fruiting June to August.

Notes.— Argostemma pictum resembles A. neurocalyx but it distinguished by the wheel-shaped corolla which is 5-merous, and very strongly recurved with the tip coiled.

Type: Nepal, Moreko, July 1821, Wallich,  Numer.  List  8394A(holotype K-W! [K-W001125376]). Fig. 2.

Ecology.— On moist rocks near small water-fall in evergreen forests, 740–2,200 m alt., flowering and fruiting July to August.

Notes.— Argostemma verticillatum is recognized by its curved filaments which its fused around the middle and forming a short filament tube. Because the Chinese species have free filaments (Chen & Taylor, 2011), therefore, we exclude China from the distribution information; further study is needed to clarify this character.
