Abstract

The new species Dregea taynguyenensis from Vietnam is described, illustrated and compared with the other Dregea species occurring in Vietnam and neighbouring countries D. cuneifolia, D. sinensis, D. volubilis and D. yunnanensis. Dregea taynguyenensis differs from these species by the leaf blade secondary veins number, calyx lobes shape, and corolla lobes size.

Dregea taynguyenensis T.B. Tran & Rodda, spec. nov. 

Dregea taynguyenensis is most similar to D. cuneifolia due to the elliptic-oblong leaf blades, cuneate at base and acuminate at apex. The former is distinguished from the latter by having 7–10 secondary veins each side of midrib (vs. 5–6 in D. cuneifolia), calyx lobes lanceolate to linear (vs. ovate) and corolla lobes 10.2–12.6 × 5.3–6.4 mm (vs. c. 4 × 4 mm).

Etymology:— The specific epithet refers to the type locality, Tay Nguyen area in Vietnam.. 

Distribution and ecology:— Dregea taynguyenensis is only found in Vietnam, Gia Lai province, Tay Nguyen area where it grows in sunny places in secondary forest, in association with Bidens pilosa Linnaeus (1753: 832), Jasminum lanceolarium Roxburg (1820: 97), Maclurodendron oligophlebium (Merrill 1923: 246) T.G. Hartley (1982: 13), Mallotus paniculatus (Lamarck in Lamarck & Poiret 1786: 207) Müller Argoviensis (1865: 34), Melicope pteleifolia (Champion ex Bentham in Bentham 1851: 330) T.G. Hartley (1993: 521).

Abstract

Agapetes brevipedicellata, a new species of Ericaceae from Putao, Kachin State, Myanmar, is here described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to Agapetes pseudogriffithii, but can be easily distinguished from the latter by its nearly fleshy branchlets, linear-lanceolate leaf blades, stout, fleshy, bracteate peduncles, pedicels and calyx pale greenish tinged with pale pink, and stems and branches with prominent leaf and inflorescence scars.

Abstract

A new species of Begonia (Begoniaceae), Begonia namkadingensis, is described. This species was collected on moist mossy limestone rocks in the Nam Kading National Protected Area in central Laos during our field survey in 2017. The species resembles B. pteridiformis, which is endemic to Peninsular Thailand, but can be distinguished by its smaller habit, fewer and smaller leaves, less hairy stems and leaves, narrower inner dorsal tepal of pistillate flowers, fewer stamens, and smaller fruits.

[Botany • 2017] Dancing Butterflies of the East Himalayas: New Meconopsis Species; M. gakyidiana & M. merakensis, from East Bhutan, Arunachal Pradesh and South Tibet ---ScRaBBlE

Abstract

The region from eastern Bhutan to Arunachal Pradesh of India and the adjacent south-eastern Tibet and northern Myanmar seems to be one of the last frontiers not only for Meconopsis hunting but also for other botanical exploration. Although there remain political difficulties for foreigners to approach the unsettled border between India and China, including the famous Tsari valley with its prominently rich flora, which was visited by Frank Ludlow, George Sherriff, Frank Kingdon-Ward and a few other plant hunters before 1950, some botanical and horticultural treasures in this region have gradually been revealed to recent travellers. As a result of examining the photographs taken by these travellers and our own botanical field research in eastern Bhutan in 2014, accompanied

by subsequent herbarium studies, two species new to science are described. The first, from eastern Bhutan and adjacent Arunachal Pradesh and Tibet, has long been cultivated under the names M. grandis or M. grandis GS600, and has recently been described as M. grandis subsp. orientalis (Grey-Wilson, 2010). It is the national flower of Bhutan. However, the type of M. grandis from Sikkim belongs to a species quite distinct from the eastern populations and the latter is now described as a new species, Meconopsis gakyidiana. The second novelty, Meconopsis merakensis, is newly described from eastern Bhutan and adjacent Arunachal Pradesh. In the past this species was confused with the closely allied M. prainiana. The two species are isolated geographically, M. prainiana being found only much further to the north-east, in south-eastern Tibet, including the Tsari valley. The title of this article is based on a comparison made by Frank Kingdon-Ward of Meconopsis flowers with butterflies in Tibet (see below).

• Meconopsis gakyidiana T. Yoshida, R. Yangzom & D. G. Long, nom. et stat. nov.; nom. nov. for Meconopsis grandis Prain subsp. orientalis Grey-Wilson, Sibbaldia 8, 81 (2010).

Type: NE Bhutan, Cho La, Ludlow, Sherriff & Hicks 20801 (BM, holotype). Meconopsis grandis auct. non Prain, G. Taylor, The Genus Meconopsis 68 (1934), pro parte.

Diagnosis: M. baileyi Prain affinis, sed flore crateriformi, petalis manifeste concavis, thecis aurantiacis, atque stylo longiore difert. 

M. gakyidiana is similar to M. baileyi, but differs from the latter in the bowl-shaped flower with distinctly concave petals, orange-coloured thecae and longer style.

Distribution: Eastern Bhutan, western Arunachal Pradesh of India, southern Xizang (Tibet) of China; 3,700–4,300m in elevation. Habitat: Open shrubberies, lush pastures, beside rubble walls in grazing grounds, rarely on the sunny edge of sub-alpine forests; often forming a loose tuft with short rhizomes and gregariously growing together with shrubs and other tall herbs.

• Meconopsis merakensis T. Yoshida, R. Yangzom & D.G. Long, sp. nov. 

Type: East Bhutan: Trashigang district, Merak region, loose rocky area above Tsejong, 4,290m

Diagnosis: M. prainianae Kingdon-Ward affinis, sed capsulis longioribus et subcylindricis differt. 

M. merakensis differs from M. prainiana in its longer and sub-cylindrical fruit capsules.

Distribution: Eastern Bhutan: Merak and Sakten regions of Tashigang district; India: western Arunachal Pradesh, region around Orka La and Bhangajang, Tawang district, Mago district; 3,800–4,500m in elevation. 

Habitat: West, north-west or north-east facing steep rocky slopes, partly moss-covered boulder slopes or grassy and rocky slopes above tree-line, exposed to intermittent foggy rains of summer monsoon; rooting deep among rocks with scanty soil.

CONCLUSIONS 

As stated in the introduction above, parts of the vast mountain ranges between Bhutan, northern Myanmar and south-west China remain very poorly explored botanically, even for such showy plants as Meconopsis. The new discoveries reported here demonstrate that diligent field work, using the modern technology of digital photography, can reveal plants new to science and often not brought into cultivation in the past. Sometimes these plants have been collected by early explorers, but those collections were often too limited to allow detailed scientific study without further material. However, when re-examined in conjunction with new specimens and images, proper scientific investigation can reveal new botanical treasures.

ABSTRACT

Phyllanthus kaweesakii Pornp., Chantar. & J.Parn. sp. nov. is newly described from the limestone mountain ridges in the northeast of Thailand. Comparison of morphology, anatomy, pollen morphology, and DNA sequences of this species with the most similar existing species P. mirabilis Müll.Arg. was undertaken. The results indicated that the two taxa are different in morphology, especially habit, stem base, and inflorescence, but that their pollen morphology and anatomy are similar. The molecular phylogenetic analysis, based on sequences of the plastid matK and nuclear ribosomal ITS regions, supported separation of the two taxa. This new species is described and illustrated, and its conservation status is discussed.

ETYMOLOGY: The name of this species honours the Thai biologist, Kaweesak Keeratikiat, who first discovered the plants.

DISTRIBUTION: Currently known only from the type location; North-eastern THAILAND. 

ECOLOGY: On open limestone ridges, ca. 440 m a.s.l. Flowering period June to September, fruiting period August to September.

ลักษณะ เป็นพืชอวบน้ำ Succulent มีโขดลำต้นอวบอ้วนสะสมอาหาร ทนแล้งได้มาก มีลักษณะแตกต่างกับมะยมหินชนิดดั้งเดิม Phyllanthus mirabilis Müll.Arg. คือ จะกิ่งก้านเล็กและแตกกิ่งก้านเยอะกว่ามาก ใบมีขนาดเล็ก ทรงกลมมน มีคู่ใบน้อย 6-10 คู่ใบ ใบมีแว็กซ์สีเขียวอมฟ้าเล็กน้อย ออกดอกช่อสั้น ติดเมล็ดปลายยอด

Abstract

A new species, Brownlowia latifiana (Malvaceae-Brownlowioideae), endemic to Terengganu, Peninsular Malaysia, is described and illustrated. This new species has most of its morphological characters that are related to those of the genus Jarandersonia. Therefore, a standard morphological taxonomic revision and morphometric analysis were carried out to assess the status of Brownlowia latifiana. Results of the morphometric analysis based on morphological characters showed that Brownlowia latifiana is embedded within the clades of Brownlowia but distanced from the clades Jarandersonia. Brownlowia formed a distinct clade in the clustering tree well separated from the Jarandersonia. A distribution map and a conservation assessment using the IUCN Red List categories and criteria are provided.

Type:— PENINSULAR MALAYSIA. Terengganu: Dungun, Jerangau Forest Reserve, buffer zone by the stream of Compartment 95, 65 m altitude, 21 July 2009 (flowers and fruits), Y.C. Chan & C.L. Lim FRI 65055 (holotype KEP [barcode 246218]; isotypes A, K). 

Brownlowia latifiana is closely related to B. argentata and B. tersa in leaf texture, type of indumentum and other flower and fruit characters. However, the former differs from the latter, B. argentata and B. tersa, by its narrowly elliptic leaves (vs. ovate to broadly ovate or lanceolate), glabrous beneath (vs. densely covered with scales), 10−20 pairs lateral veins (vs. 4−10), large transversely ellipsoid fruits (vs. small depressed obovoid), absence of androgynophore (vs. presence and elongated to 6 mm long, 3 mm thick), persistent calyx lobes (vs. absent), and thick fruit stalk (vs. thin stalk). The main morphological differences between these three species are shown in Table 3.

Etymology:— This species is named after the current Director-General of Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Dato’ Dr Abd. Latif bin Mohmod, for his contributions in securing fund of RM7.6 million for the Project of Safeguarding the Forest Plant Diversity of Peninsular Malaysia under the Ninth Malaysian Plan; successfully in acquiring the ownership of FRIM land area of 544.3 ha from the Selangor State Government in 2007; and in obtaining the recognition for FRIM as the Natural Heritage Site in 2009 and the National Heritage in 2012. 

Distribution and habitat:— This species is endemic to Peninsular Malaysia, known from Jerangau Forest Reserve and Sg. Jerangau in Dungun, Terengganu. It occurs in undulating and riverine areas of lowland dipterocarp forest on clay sandy and alluvial soils at about 65 m elevation.
