Abstract

Motivation
We generated a novel database of Neotropical snakes (one of the world's richest herpetofauna) combining the most comprehensive, manually compiled distribution dataset with publicly available data. We assess, for the first time, the diversity patterns for all Neotropical snakes as well as sampling density and sampling biases.

Main types of variables contained
We compiled three databases of species occurrences: a dataset downloaded from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), a verified dataset built through taxonomic work and specialized literature, and a combined dataset comprising a cleaned version of the GBIF dataset merged with the verified dataset.

Spatial location and grain

Neotropics, Behrmann projection equivalent to 1° × 1°.

Time period

Specimens housed in museums during the last 150 years.

Major taxa studied
Squamata: Serpentes.

Software format
Geographical information system (GIS).

Results

The combined dataset provides the most comprehensive distribution database for Neotropical snakes to date. It contains 147,515 records for 886 species across 12 families, representing 74% of all species of snakes, spanning 27 countries in the Americas. Species richness and phylogenetic diversity show overall similar patterns. Amazonia is the least sampled Neotropical region, whereas most well-sampled sites are located near large universities and scientific collections. We provide a list and updated maps of geographical distribution of all snake species surveyed.

Main conclusions

The biodiversity metrics of Neotropical snakes reflect patterns previously documented for other vertebrates, suggesting that similar factors may determine the diversity of both ectothermic and endothermic animals. We suggest conservation strategies for high-diversity areas and sampling efforts be directed towards Amazonia and poorly known species.

 CONCLUSIONS
Our study demonstrates that Neotropical snake diversity is unevenly distributed, with some ecoregions, such as the Cerrado, containing a disproportionately high diversity. We also showed that merging public and manually compiled data sources is likely to provide the largest taxonomic and geographical coverage for any system under study. However, a proper taxonomic verification, examination and assessment of biases of the public dataset proved crucial. As a result, we can now provide a solid and reliable foundation for any kind of meta-analysis, including the assessment of climate change effects, conservation strategies or design of future research agendas. Conservation priorities should focus on areas of high diversity values as well as high threat by landscape changes. Finally, we found highest diversity values in forested areas, reinforcing the need for general habitat protection compared with actions that are targeting specific species.

In order to increase our knowledge about Neotropical snakes, a geographically and taxonomically focused sampling is required, targeting Amazonia and those species whose distributions are so far largely unknown.

[Herpetology • 2008] Scriptosaura catimbau • A New Genus and Species of Eyelid-less and Limb Reduced Gymnophthalmid Lizard (Squamata, Gymnophthalmidae) from northeastern Brazil ---ScRaBBlE

Scriptosaura catimbau
Rodrigues & Maranhão dos Santos, 2008

Abstract

Scriptosaura catimbau, a new genus and species of elongate, fossorial, sand swimming eyelid-less gymnophthalmid lizard is described on the basis of specimens obtained at Fazenda Porto Seguro, municipality of Buíque, State of Pernambuco, in the Caatingas of northeastern Brazil. The type locality is entirely included within the area of the recently created Parque Nacional do Catimbau. The new lizard lacks external forelimbs, has rudimentary styliform hindlimbs and is further characterized by the absence of prefrontal, frontal, frontoparietal and supraocular scales, and by having one pair of chin shields. A member of the Gymnophthalmini radiation, the new genus is considered to be sister to Calyptommatus from which it differs externally by the absence of an ocular scale and absence of an enlarged temporal scale.

Key words: Scriptosaura catimbau, new genus, Gymnophthalmidae, taxonomy, Catimbau Nacional Park, Pernambuco State, Brazil, Caatingas

FIGURE 3. Living specimen of Scriptosaura catimbau from Parque Nacional do Catimbau.

Scriptosaura, gen. nov.

Definition: An elongate and short tailed gymnophthalmid lacking an ear opening and eyelid. Forelimbs absent, hindlimbs rudimentary, styliform, ending in a short apical scale; nail absent. Frontonasal single; prefrontals, frontal, frontoparietals, supraoculars, and loreal absent. Parietals longer than wide, contacting frontal. Nostril in the center of nasal. Collar fold absent. One pair of chin shields. Dorsal scales cycloid anteriorly, posteriorly smooth, hexagonal, keeled and slightly mucronate, in regular transverse series; lateral scales enlarged, smooth. Ventral scales smooth, in four regular transverse series, the external ones wider. Males with four preanal pores, absent in females.

Etymology: From the Latin “scriptor” = writer, and “saura” = lizard in reference to the sand tracks left by this sand swimming species. The tracks are in the origin of its popular name (escrivão = public writer) which is also attributed to other similar sand swimming lizards like those of the related genera Calyptommatus and Nothobachia.

[Herpetology • 2017] Thamnodynastes phoenix • A New Species of Thamnodynastes (Serpentes: Dipsadidae: Tachymenini) from the Open Areas of central and northeastern Brazil ---ScRaBBlE

Thamnodynastes phoenix
Franco, Trevine, Montingelli & Zaher, 2017

SALAMANDRA. 53(3)

Abstract
The genus Thamnodynastes Wagler, 1830 is currently composed by nineteen species of viviparous and opistoglyphous snakes, largely distributed in South America, from Colombia to Argentina. The analyses of a large data set of specimens from South American collections evidenced one unknown species from the open formations of central and northeastern Brazil, which is described here. The new species is distinguished from all its congeners by a unique combination of characters, including 19 dorsal rows of smooth scales on the midbody, the smallest number of subcaudals in the genus, and a distinct hemipenial morphology and coloration pattern. To define this new species we present robust diagnostic characters and discuss comparisons with other species of this diverse and taxonomically complex genus of Neotropical snakes.

Key words. Neotropical region, Caatinga, Cerrado, Squamata, taxonomy, Xenodontinae.

Figure 2. Detail view of the preserved holotype of Thamnodynastes phoenix sp. n. (IBSP 87527): (A) dorsal, (B) ventral, and (C) dextral view of the head. Scale bar: 1 cm.

Thamnodynastes phoenix sp. n.
Thamnodynastes sp. 2 – Franco & Ferreira, 2002
Thamnodynastes sp. 2 – Hamdan & Lira-da-Silva, 2012
Thamnodynastes sp. 2 – Coelho, Souza, Weider, Pereira & Ribeiro, 2013
Thamnodynastes sp. – Guedes, Nogueira & Sawaya, 2014

Diagnosis: Thamnodynastes phoenix sp. n. differs from all other species of the genus by the following combination of characters: 19/19/15 dorsal rows with smooth scales; maximum SVL 495 mm; maximum TL 136 mm; ventral scales 133 to 159; subcaudals 40 to 66; coloration of the ventral portion of the head extremely spotted with dark-brown dots, infralabials and chin shields with a white centre. Darkening intensifies on the infralabial borders, outlining a clear contrast of lateral and dark margins (Fig. 2). Two pairs of noncontinuous longitudinal dark ventral stripes, darker at the transition of the venter and the lateral sides, with a more conspicuous black spot on the apex of each ventral scale; tip of the tail lighter than the overall body coloration without blotches or dots, almost white in juvenile specimens.

Distribution: Thamnodynastes phoenix sp. n. occurs on open savannas of Brazil, predominantly the Caatinga formation of northeastern Brazil, in the states of Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, and Sergipe, extending to the Caatinga enclaves of the region of Jaíba, Minas Gerais. It also encompasses the Cerrado in central Brazil, in the states of Goiás, Tocantins and Minas Gerais (Fig. 6).

Natural History: The inspection of a few dissected specimens confirmed the viviparous reproductive mode of this species, as expected for members of the tribe Tachymenini. The specimen MZUSP 10462 (SVL 407 mm) exhibited eight well-developed embryos. The species is predominately terrestrial and nocturnal, feeds on frogs, and is associated with different types of Caatinga and Cerrado vegetation (Guedes et al. 2014).

Etymology: The specific epithet phoenix (Greek: φοῖνιξ phoinix; Latin: phoenix, phœnix, fenix) refers to the mythological bird that dies in combustion and subsequently rises from ashes in a cycle of life and death. This name acknowledges the fact that the previously selected holotype, used originally for the species description, was lost in the fire that consumed 90% of the Herpetological Collection “Alphonse Richard Hoge” of the Instituto Butantan, on March 15, 2010. Some specimens, including two paratypes, were rescued from the fire, and the data previously collected from the lost specimens were kept and used herein.

[Ichthyology • 2017] Hypostomus sertanejo • A New Armoured Catfish Species (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from north-eastern Brazil ---ScRaBBlE

Hypostomus sertanejo
Zawadzki, Ramos & Sabaj, 2017

Abstract

A re-evaluation of the armoured catfish species of Hypostomus in the Rio Jaguaribe, north-eastern Brazil, was prompted by the discovery of specimens with pale spots on a dark background collected from that basin c. 1936 and deposited at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Recent field collections in the Rio Jarguaribe basin confirmed the presence of the pale-spotted specimens and its distinctiveness as a new species. Hypostomus sertanejo n. sp. is diagnosed from other species of Hypostomus by having fins and dermal-plated regions of head and body with pale spots or vermiculations on darker background, teeth slender, asymmetrically bicuspid and numerous (34–75) on dentary and premaxilla, depressed dorsal-fin spine not reaching adipose spine, unbranched pectoral-fin spine longer than unbranched pelvic-fin ray, seven branched dorsal-fin rays and one (rarely two) predorsal plate(s) bordering supraoccipital. Ancistrus salgadae Fowler 1941 is hypothesized to be a junior synonym of Hypostomus carvalhoi (Miranda-Ribeiro, 1937), a dark-spotted Hypostomus described from the Rio Granjeiro, a tributary to the upper Rio Salgado.

Key words: armoured catfishes; cascudos; fish taxonomy; Hypostominae; Hypostomus; Neotropical fishes

Etymology: The specific epithet, sertanejo, is derived from the Portuguese word for a person from the sertão. Sertão refers to the inland xerophitic region of north-eastern Brazil that is isolated from urban centres and associated with the Caatinga and the Cerrado biomes. Sertanejos are known to be shy and elusive as well as rustic and resilient. A noun in apposition.

[Herpetology • 2018] Proceratophrys ararype • A New Species of Proceratophrys (Anura: Odontophrynidae) from the Araripe Plateau, Ceará State, Northeastern Brazil ---ScRaBBlE

Proceratophrys ararype
Mângia, Koroiva, Nunes, Roberto, Ávila, Sant'Anna, Santana & Garda, 2018

Abstract
Natural rain forest enclaves in northeastern Brazil (called Brejos de Altitude) are present in isolated areas surrounded by the semiarid Caatinga biome. Among these montane areas, the Araripe Plateau in Ceará state harbors Caatinga, Cerrado, and Atlantic Forest remnants and is considered a priority area for biodiversity conservation. Herein, we describe a new species of Proceratophrys (Amphibia: Anura: Odontophrynidae; Horned Frogs) endemic to the Araripe Plateau. Based on nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences, we show that this new species is related to the Amazonian species P. concavitympanum but can be diagnosed based on the row of tubercles on the forearm and by the number, size, and disposition of tubercles on the dorsal region. It is also widely disjunct, known only from the mesic forests of the Araripe Plateau, 2400 km away from the type locality of P. concavitympanum. The new species depends on streams for reproduction and is currently known from an area that is severely impacted by deforestation and diversion of local streams for agriculture and recreation. Considering the many threatened species occurring in the same region, there is a need for future studies to quantify the new species' full distribution and evaluate population trends to correctly assess its conservation status.

Proceratophrys cristiceps Ribeiro et al. 2012
Proceratophrys aridus Ferreira-Silva et al. 2016 (in part)

Etymology.—The Araripe Plateau spans the borders of Ceará, Pernambuco and Piauí states. ‘‘Araripe,’’ from the ancient tupi, ararype, means ‘‘on the Araras River’’ (arara, arara + ’y, river + pe, on the; Arara means Macaw in Tupi and in vernacular Portuguese). Because the new species is known only from the Araripe region, we name it after this area. The specific epithet ararype is treated as a noun in apposition

[Botany • 2019] Mesosphaerum caatingense (Lamiaceae) • A New Species from the Semi-arid Caatinga Region of Northeast Brazil ---ScRaBBlE

Mesosphaerum caatingense Harley & J.F.B.Pastore

in Harley, Pastore, de Souza Soares, Fernando & Mota, 2019.

Summary
A new species, Mesosphaerum caatingense Harley & J.F.B.Pastore (Lamiaceae: tribe Ocimeae: subtribe Hyptidinae), is described from the semi-arid Northeast region of Brazil known as the Caatinga biome, included under the domain of the STDF (Seasonally Tropical Dry Forest). The generic placement and its conservation status are assessed and its phenology is discussed. The new species is compared with some of its morphologically allied species, M. pectinatum, M. irwinii and M. sidifolium. Illustrations, photographs, a distribution map and a key to Brazilian species are also provided.

Key Words: Hyptidinae, Mesosphaerum pectinatum, South America, STDF, taxonomy

Type: Brazil, Paraíba: Município of Passagem, Fazenda Aba, 30 Nov. 2014, E. M. P. Fernando 193 (holotype CTBS!; isotype: CSTR).

Recognition. Of the four species previously recorded from Brazil, the new species most closely resembles Mesosphaerum pectinatum, but differs from this in the white corolla with two purplish blotches on the upper lip (pale pinkish or yellow-tinged and unblotched in M. pectinatum). The cymes are 16 − 18-flowered (20 − 40-flowered in M. pectinatum) and the lobes of the fruiting calyx are up to 1 mm long (1 − 1.5 mm long in M. pectinatum). ....

Distribution. Up until now, Mesosphaerum caatingense has been recorded from only three States in Brazil, all semi-arid zones of NE Brazil: Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba and Pernambuco. The species may have often been overlooked as the very common M. pectinatum, and therefore records from other areas are likely to occur. It is known to occur in the south-west corner of the Município of Salgueiro, Pernambuco State; in the Seridó region of Rio Grande do Norte State, within the boundaries of the Municípios of Currais Novos and Jucurutu; and in the Município of Passagem, in Paraíba state.
