Nettorhamphos radula, new genus and species, is described from two specimens, 20.3–40.2 mm SL, trawled from sponge and algae reefs between 30–40 meters in depth offshore from Fremantle, Western Australia. The new taxon is distinguished from all other members of the Gobiesocidae by having vast fields of tiny conical teeth throughout the oral jaws that are arranged in multiple, regular rows along the lingual surface of the premaxilla and the dentary. The new taxon is tentatively considered a close relative of two other southern Australian endemic clingfish taxa (Posidonichthys and the undescribed “Genus A”) based on the presence of a well-developed and heavily ossified subopercular bone that articulates strongly with both the opercle (dorsally) and the preopercle (anteriorly).

Etymology.— A combination of the Greek words (netta), meaning duck, and (rhamphos), meaning bill, curved-beak. Gender neuter.

Common name: Duckbilled Clingfish 

Distribution and habitat.— Known to date only from two locations to the west of Five Fathom Bank (Indian Ocean), off the coast of Fremantle, Western Australia (Fig. 11). The new species was collected via trawls through algae/sponge reefs between 33–37 meters in depth. Other species of fishes collected by the same trawls include the pipefish Stigmatopora nigra, the labrids Austrolabrus maculatus, Eupetrichthys angustipes,Siphonognathus caninus, and S. attenuatus, and the gobiesocids Alabes occidentalis and ‘‘Genus A sp. 2’’ (sensu Hutchins, 2008). 

Etymology.— From the Latin radula, a tool used for scraping. In reference to the many tiny conical teeth on the lingual surface of the premaxilla and dentary, which are reminiscent of the radula of a snail. A noun in apposition.

The only two known specimens were found on museum shelves, where they had sat for 40 years.

Xyliphius sofiae, new species, is described based on a unique specimen exhibiting four autapomorphies: eyes absent vs. present (though reduced); color pale, lacking pigment vs. head and body darkly pigmented; branchiostegal rays five vs. four; and unculiferous tubercles on posterior body distributed evenly vs. enlarged unculiferous tubercles typically arranged in five distinct rows above pelvic-fin base to posterior end of caudal peduncle. In addition, the pectoral fin of X. sofiae, new species, has one ossified proximal radial vs. two in congeners (except X. magdalenae, not examined). Xyliphius sofiae, new species, differs from all congeners except X. lepturus by snout tip elongated and narrowly rounded vs. short and broadly rounded, often with small median notch; fifth ceratobranchial relatively narrow with elongate acicular teeth vs. broadly expanded, leaf-shaped, with shorter and broader, conical teeth; anterior limits of branchial apertures separated by distance less than length of aperture vs. greater than length of aperture; anal-fin rays modally nine vs. seven; and lateral line extending onto base of caudal-fin rays vs. finishing in hypural region. Based on the single specimen collected in the main channel of the Río Amazonas near Iquitos, Peru, we describe the osteology of X. sofiae, new species, using a non-invasive technique: high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT). We consider Xyliphius lombarderoi Risso and Risso, 1964, a species based on a unique holotype that is now lost, to be a subjective junior synonym of X. barbatus Alonso de Arámburu and Arámburu, 1962. Variable characteristics are summarized for the seven species of Xyliphius treated here as valid, and their distributions are plotted based on a comprehensive review of museum specimens.

Xyliphius sofiae Sabaj, Carvalho and Reis, new species 

Distribution and habitat.— Xyliphius sofiae is known from a single locality in the Amazon River near the town of Iquitos, Peru (Fig. 10). The specimen was collected using a large floating net stretched between two canoes and dragged downstream through the water column.

Etymology.— In honor of the daughter of first author on the specific epithet, for inspiring wisdom in her father.

Se describe la especie nueva Xyliphius sofiae basado en un único ejemplar que exhibe cuatro autoapomorfias: ojos ausentes vs. presente (aunque muy reducidos); color pálido, ausencia de pigmento vs. cabeza y cuerpo con pigmentación oscura; cinco radios branquiostegales vs. cuatro; y tubérculos en la parte posterior del cuerpo distribuidos uniformemente vs. tubérculos dispuestas típicamente en cinco filas visibles sobre la región entre la base de la aleta pélvica hasta el pedúnculo caudal. Además, la aleta pectoral de X. sofiae tiene un radial proximal osificado vs dos en sus otros congéneres (no observado en X. magdalenae). Xyliphius sofiae se diferencia de todos sus congéneres, excepto X. lepturus, por la punta del hocico alargado y estrechamente redondeada vs. corto y ampliamente redondeado, a menudo con una pequeña muesca mediana; quinto ceratobranquial relativamente estrecho con los dientes aciculares alargados vs. ampliamente expandidos, en forma de hoja, con dientes cónicos y más amplios; límites anteriores de las aberturas branquiales separadas por la distancia menor que la longitud de la abertura vs. mayor que la longitud de la abertura; los radios de la aleta anal de forma modal nueve vs. siete y la linea lateral extendiendose posteriormente hasta la aleta caudal vs. linea lateral extendiendose posteriormente hasta los hipurales. El único espécimen de X. sofiae depositado en colecciones de museos fue colectado en el canal principal del Río Amazonas cerca de Iquitos, Peru y describimos su osteología utilizando técnicas no invasivas: tomografía computarizada en alta resolución. Xyliphius lombarderoi Risso and Risso, 1964, especie descrita solamente basado en el holotipo que está perdido, es considerado como sinónimo junior de X. barbatus Alonso de Arámburu y Arámburu, 1962. Se resumen características variables de las siete especies de Xyliphius tratadas aquí como válidos, y sus distribuciones se representan gráficamente basadas en una extensiva revisión de especímenes en museos.

A new species of Eigenmannia is described from the Río Pucuro, Río Tuíra basin, Panama. It is diagnosed from all congeners by the position of the mouth, the color pattern, the number of anal-fin rays, the number of scales on lateral line, the number of scales rows above the lateral line, the number and arrangement of teeth on the dentary, the number of precaudal vertebrae, the relative depth of the posterodorsal expansion on infraorbitals 1+2, and the relative size of coronomeckelian bone. The new species is the first Eigenmannia described from Central American drainages, and the northernmost species of the genus.

Distribution.— Eigenmannia meeki is known from its type locality in the Río Púcuro, and Río Chucunaque in the Río Tuíra basin, Darien Province, Panama (Fig. 5). 

 Etymology.— The specific epithet, meeki, is in honor of Seth Eugene Meek (1859–1914) who made many contributions to the knowledge of the diversity of the fishes of Panama

Una nueva especie de Eigenmannia es descrita del río Pucuro, que pertenece a la cuenca del Río Tuíra, Panamá. Esta diagnosticada de las demás especies del género por la posición de la boca, el padrón de coloración, el número de radios de la aleta anal, el número de escamas de la línea lateral, el número de hileras de escamas arriba de la línea lateral, el número y disposición de los dientes en el hueso dentario, el número de vertebras pre-caudales, el tamaño relativo de la expansión postero-dorsal del hueso infraorbital 1+2 y el tamaño relativo del hueso corono-meckeliano. Esta nueva especie es la primera Eigenmannia descrita de las cuencas de América Central y además es la especie con la distribución más boreal del género.

The “Lembeh Frogfish” or “Ocellated Frogfish,” a distinct antennariid, known for many years, especially among members of the dive community, and suggested by some to represent an undescribed species, is identified as Nudiantennarius subteres (Smith and Radcliffe). Unique in several ways—including reduced dermal spinules, the body appearing naked; illicium short, about half the length of the second dorsal-fin spine; second dorsal-fin spine unusually long and narrow, without a posterior membrane; pectoral lobe narrow, somewhat detached from the body; membranes between the rays of the paired fins deeply incised; and all pelvic-fin rays simple—the species is redescribed and figured below. Morphological and molecular analyses indicate a close relationship with the Sargassumfish, Histrio histrio.

The deep channels of large rivers throughout the humid Neotropics are occupied by diverse and abundant assemblages of electric knifefishes. Historically this habitat has been poorly sampled, but extensive benthic trawling efforts in the Brazilian Amazon in the 1990s produced large numbers of electric fishes especially in the family Apteronotidae. A large number of these specimens, initially identified as Porotergus, have been found to belong within Compsaraia, a genus with two species described from the Orinoco and western Amazon. From this material we describe a new species, from the Amazon River in Brazil, and provide a new diagnosis for the genus. This species is readily distinguished from congeners by a short, rounded snout and small, subterminal mouth with reduced dentition. This species inhabits large rivers in the Eastern and Central Amazon between Ilha Grande de Gurupá and the mouth of the Rio Içá. This description brings the total number of valid apteronotid species to 95.

Compsaraia iara, new species

Etymology.— This species is named for the Iara, a water nymph from Tupi-Brazilian folklore said to reside in the rivers of the Brazilian Amazon and often blamed for the disappearance of fishermen. A noun in apposition.

An undescribed species of the frogfish genus Histiophryne, of the teleost order Lophiiformes, family Antennariidae, is described on the basis of 60 specimens collected from shallow inshore waters of Western and South Australia. Previously confused with its morphologically similar congener H. cryptacanthus, it differs from the latter and from all other members of the genus in having the following combination of features: illicium tiny but easily discernible without aid of a microscope; esca present, a small tuft of filaments, easily distinguished from illicium; skin covered with tiny dermal spinules, especially on head, cutaneous filaments and appendages absent; dorsal-fin rays 15–16; pectoral-fin rays 9 (rarely 8); vertebrae 22–23; head, body, and fins typically off white, sometimes peppered with numerous small, close-set ocelli. Genetic divergence from its congeners in the nuclear recombination activation gene-2 (RAG2) and cytochrome oxidase-I (COI) genes is at least 8.9%. The new species is diagnosed, described, and compared with its congeners. A revised key to the species of the genus is also provided.

New Nharangga name: Nharangga Warrga Guuya 

New English name: Narungga Frogfish

Etymology.— The specific epithet narungga honors a tribe of Indigenous Australians, the Narungga (otherwise known as the Narangga), whose traditional lands are located throughout Yorke Peninsula, from near Port Wakefield in the east to Port Broughton in the west, and all the way down to the southern tip of the Peninsula (Sutton, 1899; Tindale, 1936).

A new species of Spatuloricaria is described from the Orinoco River basin, Colombia. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: a broad, dark brown stripe on the first pre-dorsal plate, which occupies the entire plate, reaching the preopercle, and sometimes reaching the second pre-dorsal plate; the possession of a small group of plates posterior to the urogenital pore; the abdominal surface with scattered, very small plates leaving naked areas; the possession of five transverse dark brown bands on the dorsal region; and four to five premaxillary teeth. The new species is the first valid species of Spatuloricaria distributed in the Orinoco River basin. Ecological notes of the species and comments regarding the taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships of the genus are offered.

Spatuloricaria terracanticum, new species

Spatuloricaria sp.—Urbano-Bonilla et al., 2018:74 [listed; included in identification key for Loricariidae genera and species of the Cusiana River, Orinoco River basin].

Etymology.—The specific epithet is from the latin terra [earth] and canticum [song]. It is dedicated to the Llanos work songs (cantos de vaquería). Its origin dates back to the 16th century and has been transferred from generation to generation in the Llanos region of Colombia and Venezuela. Sung a cappella, melodies reflect the feeling and the close relationship of the llanero with their myths, beliefs, nature, climate, and animals. Although these songs have been gradually lost within modern society due to economic, political, and social causes, UNESCO has declared them as intangible cultural heritage of humanity

Una nueva especie de Spatuloricaria, proveniente del río Orinoco, Colombia, es descrita. La nueva especie se distingue de sus congéneres por los siguientes caracteres: una banda transversal ancha en la primera placa predorsal, la cual ocupa toda la placa y el preopérculo, alcanzado algunas veces la segunda placa predorsal; un grupo de pequeñas placas posterior al poro urogenital; abdomen cubierto por placas pequeñas y dispersas, las cuales dejan áreas desnudas; presencia de cinco bandas transversales marrón oscuro en la región dorsal; y cuatro a cinco dientes en el premaxilar. La nueva especie es la primera especie válida de Spatuloricaria distribuida en la cuenca del río Orinoco. Se presentan notas ecológicas de la especie, y comentarios con relación a la taxonomía y relaciones filogenéticas del género.

Curculionichthys scaius, new species, is distinguished from other congeners by having two usually conspicuous, somewhat triangular dark brown speckles lateral to the anal-fin origin, a pointed snout with paired rostral plates, numerous lateral abdominal plates, a single series of large median abdominal plates, numerous dentary and premaxillary teeth, and several morphometric proportions of the body and head, mostly involving prepelvic, prepectoral, and preanal distances, head and cleithral width, caudal peduncle length, and dorsal-fin spine. The new species represents the first record of the genus Curculionichthys in the Madeira River basin and is the most westerly distribution in the Amazon.

Etymology.— The specific epithet scaius, from the Greek Rjaior (skaios), meaning west, westward, in allusion to the westerly distribution in the Brazilian Shield. An adjective.

Curculionichthys scaius, espécies nova, é distinguida dos demais congêneres por possuir um par de pequenas manchas escuras triangulares laterais à origem da nadadeira anal, margem anterior do focinho pontiaguda com uma placa rostral pareada, numerosas placas abdominais laterais, uma série única de grandes placas medianas abdominais, numerosos dentes no dentário e pré-maxila, e diversas proporções morfométricas do corpo e da cabeça, a maioria envolvendo as distâncias pré-pélvica, pré-peitoral, e pré-anal, a largura da cabeça e do cleitro, o comprimento do pedúnculo caudal, e o espinho da nadadeira dorsal. Esta nova espécie representa o primeiro registro do gênero Curculionichthys para a bacia do Rio Madeira, sendo a espécie com distribuição mais a oeste na bacia Amazônica.
