A new species, Caulokaempferia dinabandhuensis Biseshwori & Bipin (Zingiberaceae) is described. This is the first report of the genus from Manipur, India. Caulokaempferia dinabandhuensis is characterized by tubular calyx widened in the middle and tapering towards the apex and suborbicular, deeply split labellum with elongated, obtuse tips. Full description and a photographic plate of this new species and comparative analysis among three Caulokaempferia are presented.

In 2015, during a floristic expedition in northeastern India, a population of an unusual Zingiber Miller (1754: 525) was found near Durga Mandir, between Bomdilla and Balukpong, in West Kameng District, Arunachal Pradesh. At a first glance the species clearly belongs to section Cryptanthium Horaninow (1862: 27) in having a procumbent peduncle. Detailed studies revealed that it does not match any of the known species of Indian Zingiber, hence it is described here as new. Plants of this population are morphologically similar to Z. bipinianum Roy et al. (2015: 298) and Z. mizoramensis Kumar et al. (2015: 81), but detailed studies of the types and protologues confirm the novelty of this species. We also consulted relevant literature discussing Indian Zingiberaceae, which further confirms that this is a new species (e.g. Bai et al. 2015, Baker 1892, Leong-Škorničková et al. 2015, Kishor & Leong-Škorničková 2013, Kumar et al. 2013, 2015, Mood & Theilade 2002, Roscoe 1828, Sabu 2003, 2006, Sabu et al. 2009, 2013b, Talukdar et al. 2015, Thongam & Konsam 2014, Thongam et al. 2013, Triboun et al. 2014, Tripathi & Singh 2006, Wu & Larsen 2000).

ABSTRACT

 Zingiber sirindhorniae Triboun and Keerat., a new species from Thailand, is described and illustrated. It belongs to Zingiber section Dymczewiczia (Horan.) Benth. because of its terminal inflorescence which is rather rare in Zingiber.

Zingiber sirindhorniae Triboun and Keerat., sp. nov.

Diagnosis: Zingiber sirindhorniae belongs to Zingiber section Dymczewiczia (Horan.) Benth. due to the terminal infl orescence on the leafy shoot. It is most similar to Zingiber plicatum Škorničk. and Q.B. Nguyễ n in having terminal inflorescence and the limestone habitat, but they differ by the former having a short and small terminal inflorescence on a leafy stem and by the dark maroonish flowers.

Distribution. Endemic to Thailand. So far known only from Loei Province. 

 Ecology. In humus among rocks in partially shaded dry evergreen forest on limestone hills, alt. 350-450 m. 

 Phenology. Flowering in June to August and fruiting in July to October. 

 Etymology. The specific epithet honours Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn of Thailand who has taken a keen interest in the conservation of plants. Vernacular. Aiyarit (ไอยริศ), name given by Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn.

  

Notes. Four Thai species of Zingiber produce a terminal inflorescence; the inflorescence is always terminal in Z. pellitum Gagnep. and Z. gramineum Blume, while Z. barbatum Wall. and Z. junceum Gagnep. occasionally produce a terminal inflorescence. These four species are taller (to 1 m tall or taller) and are terrestrial, while Z. sirindhorniae is rather slender and small (40-70 cm tall), and grows in humus in crevices on limestone cliffs. In habit Zingiber sirindhorniae is more like Z. plicatum Škorničk. and Q.B. Nguyễn. The inflorescence of the new species is rather fragile and delicate.

Abstract

Zingiber Mill. is distributed from India to the Pacific but only a few species are known from east of Wallace’s Line, whereas the area to the west is rich in species. A recent collection from limestone at Bantimurung, South Sulawesi, Indonesia represents a new eastern species, Zingiber ultralimitale Ardiyani & A.D.Poulsen, which is described, illustrated, and barcoded using three of the four barcoding loci (rbcL, trnH-psbA and ITS). Placement of this species using morphological evidence is ambiguous but a combination of evidence from morphology, pollen anatomy and molecular analysis indicates that it belongs to Zingiber sect. Zingiber.

Zingiber ultralimitale Ardiyani & A.D.Poulsen, sp. nov. 

This species is distinct from all others by the following combination of characters: narrow long loose green bracts, bright yellow flowers, and large free yellow lateral staminodes.

―TYPE: Indonesia, originally collected from South Sulawesi Province, Bantimurung NP, ... and cultivated as RBGE 20091017*A, flowering material vouchered on 12 June 2013 as Newman, M.F. 2552 (holotype BO; isotype E). (Fig. 2, 3)

Etymology. The specific epithet ultralimitale means ‘on the other side of the border’, referring to the occurrence of this species east of Wallace’s Line. 

Ecology and habitat. Limestone cliffs and boulders in forest, lowlands at c. 300 m. During the first year of cultivation in Edinburgh, it was discovered that the species has a dormancy period during which it survives entirely underground.

Abstract

Kaempferia noctiflora, another precocious flowering species of Kaempferia subgen. Protanthium (Zingiberaceae) from Northern Thailand is described and illustrated. Pure white flowers with nocturnal anthesis and a tinged purplish red patch along the midvein of the upper surface of the leaves are the unique characters of this new taxon. The morphological characters of K. noctiflora are compared to closely related species and a key to Thai precocious flowering Kaempferia species is also provided.

พืชชนิดใหม่ของโลก...ถูกค้นพบครั้งแรกที่จังหวัดเชียงใหม่และตีพิมพ์ตามหลักอนุกรมวิธานพืชโดย ผศ.ดร. ทยา เจนจิตติกุล และ นายณัฐพล นพพรเจริญกุล จากภาควิชาพฤกษศาสตร์ คณะวิทยาศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล

สำหรับ specific epithet “noctiflora” มาจากคำภาษาละติน “noctis” ซึ่งแปลว่า night (กลางคืน) และคำว่า “flos/floris” ในภาษาละตินหมายถึง flower (ดอกไม้) 

บ่งบอกถึงลักษณะเด่นของพืชชนิดนี้ซึ่งมีดอกที่บานตอนกลางคืนและยังเป็นลักษณะสำคัญที่ใช้ในการจัดจำแนกออกจากพืชชนิดอื่น

“เราเดินทางจากกรุงเทพถึงเชียงใหม่ในตอนเย็น จากนั้นลงพื้นที่ต่อเพื่อศึกษาลักษณะและเวลาการบานของเปราะดอกขาวเชียงใหม่ เช้าวันรุ่งขึ้นก็กลับมาอีกครั้งเพื่อเก็บรายละเอียดที่เหลือเพิ่มเติม” เนื่องจากดอกของเปราะดอกขาวเชียงใหม่บานเต็มที่ในช่วงหัวค่ำ ทำให้การลงพื้นที่สำรวจพืชชนิดนี้เกิดขึ้นทั้งกลางวันและกลางคืน

ถึงอย่างนั้น...ความยากความท้าทายของการสำรวจไม่ใช่เพียงแค่การลงพื้นที่ในตอนกลางคืน แต่เป็น “เวลา” อีกด้วย

ดอกพืชชนิดนี้ออกเหนือดินในขณะที่ไม่มีใบและออกใบตอนที่ไม่มีดอก หรือพูดง่ายๆ ว่า เห็นดอกไม่เห็นใบ เห็นใบไม่เห็นดอก หรืออาจจะไม่เห็นทั้งดอกและใบ เพราะมีช่วงพักตัวใต้ดินยาวถึง 8 เดือน ยังไม่พอ...พืชชนิดนี้ยังมีระยะเวลาการออกดอกไม่เกิน 15 วัน (ในรอบปี) และในแต่ละปี first flowering date ก็ขึ้นอยู่กับสภาพอากาศอีกด้วย ซึ่งหมายความว่า ถ้าเราเดินทางไปสำรวจผิดเวลา เราจะไม่เจออะไรเลย!

 Zingiber alba is a new species from West Sumatra. Scaphoclamys perakensis is newly recorded species from the Eastern part of Sumatra. Detailed descriptions and photographs are given for each species.

Zingiber alba Nurainas, sp. nov 

Type: INDONESIA, Sumatra, Simanau, Solok, West Sumatra, altitude 1200 m, 21 June 2016, Nurainas 3272 (holotype ANDA, isotype BO, TAI).

 Zingiber alba differs from Zingiber acuminatum var. acutibractetatum Valeton in its apex of ligules rounded, elongated of spike, arrangement of bract at top of spike is rose-like, bract bright white, ovate with subapicalmucronate, bracteole small, white and yellow flower

Distribution: throughout West Sumatra province and Batang Gadis National Park, North Sumatra. 

Ecology: Zingiber alba grows on sandy soils along the margins of mixed evergreen forests, edges of small rivers at 500-1200 meter elevation. Etymology: the epithet specific refers to color of bract. 

Phenology: Zingiber alba was observed in flower when it was collected in February 2006 and May 2016 and fruit when it was collected in October 2014. 

Vernacular name: Penggalan (Minangkabau language).

Abstract

A new species, Etlingera frederikii, is described and illustrated, and is the first record of the genus in the Bougainville Region. Etlingera frederikii and E. cevuga, which occurs in Fiji and Samoa, are the two most easterly species in the distribution range of the genus. The new species differs from Etlingera cevuga in its much larger leaves, with a conspicuously silky-haired band on the ligule; the smaller, narrowly ovoid to cylindrical inflorescence with pale brown bracts (not hemiglobose with reddish brown bracts); and fewer, smaller flowers.

Etlingera frederikii A.D.Poulsen, sp. nov. 

Etymology. Named in honour of H.R.H. Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, who was the patron of the Danish Expedition Fund that planned and executed the Galathea 3 circumnavigation during which this new species was discovered. The Crown Prince has himself participated in expeditions to Central China and Northeast Greenland and has also supported an expedition to Borneo in 2002 led by the first author. 

Distribution. Bougainville Island. So far, documented only from the type locality in ridge forest at 850 m. It is likely to occur naturally on the neighbouring island to the south-east, Choiseul, in the Solomon Islands. A cultivated plant with a dried-up inflorescence in a garden in Buka Town, Buka Island (just north of Bougainville Island) is very likely of the same species.

Vernacular name. Rurutate (Rotokas language). Uses not known.
