Nickelodeon Is Reviving All That With Kenan Thompson as Executive Producer
Fresh out the box, stop, look and watch!
All That was the show that kept on giving to Nickelodeon over the course of a decade in the 1990s and 2000s. Now the company’s new president thinks a revival of the sketch-comedy series could be all that — and more.
Nickelodeon will revive the program — a Saturday Night Live for the tween set — with an all-new cast. But the show will have callbacks to its past as well. Kenan Thompson, the long-running SNL cast member who got his start on television when All That launched in 1994, will serve as an executive producer. Nickelodeon expects some former cast members to make appearances in the series.
The sketch comedy show “stayed in the zeitgeist for many years,” Brian Robbins, president of Nickelodeon, told Variety. “People are really fond of it.” One regular sketch, Good Burger, featuring Kel Mitchell, was set in a fast-food restaurant with a clueless cashier, and served up the premise for an original movie in 1997, starring Thompson and Mitchell. Kids also loved recurring characters like “Walter the Earboy,” "Everyday French with Pierre Escargot," "Vital Information with Lori Beth Denberg," “The Spice Boys,” and “Baggin’ Saggin’ Barry.”
The cast of Nickelodeon's "All That" appear on stage for a taped segment in front of an audience in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles . From left are Kyle Sullivan, Jamie Spears (the younger sibling of superstar Britney Spears), Giovonne Samuels, Shane Lyons, Bryan Hearne and Lisa Renee Foiles. Spears expects to act for awhile before launching a singing careerBRITNEYS SISTER, LOS ANGELES, USA
Thompson is one of the people who remembers the series fondly. “It means everything to me,” he told Variety. “It was my first job that I ever had. It gave me an opportunity.”
Robbins was a co-creator and an executive producer of the original run of the series, which during its time featured Thompson, Kel Mitchell, Amanda Bynes, Nick Cannon and Jamie Spears, among others. Many of the cast members went on to star in other landmark Nickelodeon series, such as The Amanda Show, Kenan & Kel and The Nick Cannon Show. Other regular stars included Lori Beth Denberg, Danny Tamberelli (Pete & Pete), and Josh Server. Thompson said many of the show’s stars remain close more than a decade after “All That” went off the air.
An All That revival would continue Nickelodeon’s recent efforts to dig into its past to help secure its future. In recent years, Nickelodeon executives have tested new editions of one-time stalwarts like Hey Arnold! and Legends of the Hidden Temple, sometimes as movie specials. Such programs can spur viewing by both parents and children, as one generation tries to interest another in favorite pieces of popular culture.

“We think there’s a great opportunity to find the next pool of stars,” said Robbins. “We want to bring the show back in a real fun way. This summer, we are going to bring back a lot of the original cast and the cast through the years, and let them introduce the new cast of All That to the world.” He suggested the program would be “a sort of mash-up of some of the old sketches and a lot of new sketches.”
For Thompson, the idea, pitched to him directly by Robbins, was a “no-brainer.” Thompson said he and Robbins have “always remained close. He is one of my second fathers.” Thompson didn’t hesitate when Robbins suggested he work on the new program as an executive producer.
“Every time he does that, he has been right on the money. He has done it infinite times in my life,” Thompson said.
Thompson is not giving up his day job on Saturday Night Live, however, and he acknowledges “my time is limited.” But he expects to have some say over the show’s tone and casting, among other things. “If I’m not at the table read, I’ll be on the phone during the table read,’ he said. “I’ll be around.” He hopes the program will have a similar role at the Viacom-owned kids’ outlet. “I think it should be a staple show for Nickelodeon,” he said.
Thompson is also working with kids media brand Pocket.watch and Viacom to develop Skoogle, a kids sketch comedy show created by and starring the Nickelodeon alum Kenan Thompson for Nickelodeon.
Skoogle will feature Thompson as the voice of the titular Skoogle, an Siri/Alexa-like digital assistant for kids who has been created to help with their daily problems. Along with his cast of kid entrepreneur inventors, Skoogle will satirize everything from service apps to streaming entertainment to social media. The series marks the first major series production for pocket.watch.
There is currently no word whether the iconic All That theme song, performed by TLC will also be returning.

A huge congratulations are in order for '90s Nickelodeon star Danny Tamberelli and his wife, Katelyn Detweiler, who have just announced that they are expecting their first child together!
Katelyn Detweiler and Danny Tamberelli / Via Instagram
The 37-year-old comedian, who starred in hit '90s Nickelodeon series as The Adventures of Pete & Pete, All That and Figure it Out, posted a photo of his wife holding her bump on Instagram, writing on Friday, “Doesn’t matter what day it is, my love for you is always on 11! Can’t begin to explain the happiness I feel knowing that we are rolling into parenthood together, so in love and ready to continue our adventure!”
He then made a reference to his days on Pete & Pete, joking, “Could be a Pete or Petunia… We opted for a life surprise! More to come mid June!!”
Tamberelli married his author wife in May last year in Pennsylvania.
His former Pete & Pete co-star, Michael Maronna (Big Pete), attended the ceremony along with 220 guests. They honeymooned in Portugal.
Tamberelli broke the news a day after Nickelodeon announced that the network are reviving its '90s sketch show All That, which, executive produced by fellow All That alum Kenan Thompson (Kenan & Kel, Good Burger, SNL) will feature a mix new and old cast members and skits.
Speaking to Page Six, Tamberelli, who appeared on over three years of its original run, revealed that he thinks Thompson’s new revival of the Nickelodeon sketch comedy classic is a great idea.
“I think it’s awesome!” Tamberelli said.
“All That was a show that reached out to so many kids from all different backgrounds and brought them all together through laughter.”
He added, “I mean, all kids agree that feet and cheese are funny punchlines.”
Tamberelli also loves that the original show, which ran from 1994-2005, has spanned generations of fans.
“That’s one of my favorite things that people say to me when I get recognized from All That: ‘I have been showing my kids,'” he said. “Passing it down is the highest form of flattery.”
Nickelodeon announced on Thursday that the show — which starred Thompson, Kel Mitchell, Amanda Bynes, Josh Server and Lori Beth Denberg — will feature a whole new cast.
Tamberelli, who is about to go on a live tour for his podcast, “Danny and Mike,” which features his Pete & Pete co-star Mike Maronna, said he would love to be involved with the new show if asked.
“It was one of the best times of my life,” he said.

Nickelodeon's new slate of programming includes reboots of favorites and content for today’s tech-savvy kids.
When Nickelodeon President Brian Robbins took the stage at the Viacom’s Spark panel for employees, one of the things he wanted to make perfectly clear is that the newly-installed leadership team is not comprised of executives—they’re creatives, just like the staffers who make the brand’s shows.
“I wanted to identify makers,” said Robbins. Since taking the helm at Nickelodeon last October, he has selected Shauna Phelan to be head of live-action scripted shows, Ramsey Naito to be head of animation production and development, Rob Bagshaw to be head of unscripted content, and Paul DeBenedittis to be head of programming and content strategy. “I knew if we could build a team like that, we could win. There’s a big difference between talking about making things and knowing how to.”
Robbins has been tasked with revitalizing the network’s programming and bringing content to a generation of viewers accustomed to watching it on various devices. To achieve that, Robbins introduced his leadership team—all of whom have either worked full-time at Nickelodeon previously or on its projects—and he unveiled a strategy that includes a commitment to diversity and programming that’s conducive to family viewing and gives kids the ability to watch on a range of platforms and devices.
"We’ve all been talking about taking risks and not getting bogged down in bureaucracy. That is inspiring to the creative process." - Ramsey Naito, EVP of Animation Production and Development at Nickelodeon
During the panel presentation, he and Naito also spoke of their dedication to airing animated shorts from Nickelodeon’s library and new artists as a way to quickly get fresh content on-air and attract top talent looking to make their mark.
“We’ve all been talking about taking risks and not getting bogged down in bureaucracy,” says Naito. “That is inspiring to the creative process.”
Another change Robbins made is creating an unscripted department, which the kids’ channel hasn’t previously had.
Hours before the panel, Nickelodeon made major programming announcements. Among them is a reboot of All That, of which original cast members Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell (Kenan & Kel, Good Burger) will serve executive producers; The Casagrandes, an animated spinoff of The Loud House, and an untitled scripted music series set in a boarding school for the performing arts, which will feature original songs performed in every episode. It’s being produced by Simon Fuller (the producer behind American Idol) and One Republic frontman, Ryan Tedder.
“Music is such a big part of kids’ lives, we have to be in the music space,” Robbins says. “Out of it might come a boy band or a K-pop group. It’s a way for us to have our own incubator for musical talent but at the core is a great musical show.”
Robbins suggested they could skip signing with a record label and instead upload songs direct to Apple Music or Spotify. They’d share the rights with Fuller and Tedder.
"Music is such a big part of kids’ lives, we have to be in the music space. It’s a way for us to have our own incubator for musical talent but at the core is a great musical show." - Brian Robbins, President of Nickelodeon Group
Ryan’s Mystery Playdate
Also on the slate is Ryan’s Mystery Playdate, starring the 7-year-old YouTube sensation known for unboxing toys for his audience of 22 million subscribers. Unlike his YouTube videos, the Nickelodeon version has him unboxing pieces of a puzzle that reveal clues about who his playdate is.
“It’s a way for us to know that we look like what’s going on in the rest of the universe,” says Robbins, who expects the show to premiere in April.
There are also ideas in the works for a spinoff of SpongeBob SquarePants featuring the beloved characters from Bikini Bottom. Naito said they’re working with the co-executive producers of SpongeBob to develop concepts and remain true to Stephen Hillenberg’s original idea.
They’re also working on CG-animated series Paddington, featuring a younger version of the bear and his London-based adventures and Lego City. And John Cena will host a new version of the game show, Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?
The panel also spoke of their dedication to allowing new shows the time necessary to finding its audience instead of canceling programs that aren’t immediate hits.
“If you’re going to bring all these people on board to create something and promote it, you have to stick around to make sure it finds an audience,” DeBenedittis said. “I’m a big believer in sampling. You have to put it in multiple day parts, give it different leads-ins and lead-outs. Then you look at the data points to understand who is watching something.”

It’s not an exaggeration to say that the Nickelodeon sketch comedy series All That truly exemplified what it meant to be a ‘90s kid. With an opening sequence of everyday kids jumping around in color-block streetwear and jamming out to the irresistibly catchy TLC theme song, and musical guests who personified everything hip and cool at the moment, the show goes down in history as an favorite.
With a concept described to Bustle by cast member Alisa Reyes as "The Mickey Mouse Club mixed with In Living Color and Mad TV with a little bit of Roundhouse,” the show had the perfect concoction of early '90s inspiration to thrive. But All That's diversity made the must-watch kids' show stand out way ahead of its time. All That gave comedic greats such as Saturday Night Live’s Kenan Thompson, Wild ’n Out’s Nick Cannon, and Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias their breakout roles. It pushed the envelope with skits such as “The Inconvenience Store” and “Miss Piddlin,” which featured young Black comedians playing characters who represented everyday folks in our communities that many viewers knew and loved in real life. But most importantly, it gave kids who dreamed of being performers one day the inspiration and representation they needed to keep going.
As the show approaches the 25-year anniversary of its premiere this coming April, Bustle spoke to three of the show’s beloved cast members, Reyes (Seasons 1-3), Christy Knowings (Seasons 4-6), and Danny Tamberelli (Seasons 4-6) about what it was like to star in one of the most nostalgic TV shows of the 90s, the memories they made with musical guests, and the incredible legacy the show ultimately holds today.
Alisa Reyes: “It was awesome shooting the show on the Nickelodeon sound stage at Universal Studios. Every day we had a theme park tour go through our makeup room...people on this tour could see us through a glass window and wall when we got our hair & makeup done. We also used to sneak out on our lunch break and go on rides in the theme park, so I guess life wasn't too shabby for a kid.”
Christy Knowings: “My favorite moment on set was when I started to do this character in Season 6 named Gloria Bankhead. She was an over-the-top Martha Stewart, I had never played any character like her! I just remember being on set and being her all-day long. Everybody loved it! The writers, the stage managers, everybody was just like, ‘Hi Gloria!’ Gloria Bankhead was my favorite character to play. She was on set like that all the time. It was fun to just be in character like that, even when the cameras weren’t rolling. It’s what I’d do constantly.”
Danny Tamberelli: “A few memories [on set] come to mind … but the Nick On Sunset studio was totally haunted. I used to hear footsteps in the rafters and I personally saw the water turn on in the men's bathroom by itself.”
The Iconic Musical Guests Brought The Best (And Most Hilarious) Memories
DT: “I got to play bass with Wyclef Jean, so that memory is pretty high up there...but I also got scolded for ruining a musical performance take because I was staring at Britney Spears' lower back tattoo—sorry, not sorry. There was also the time Phil Collins took his kids to see the show, and in one of the sketches, I was a caveman. I got star struck and went right up to him forgetting I was in costume. I startled him and his children pretty good. It was awkward for a second, but we worked it out.”
CK: “And I remember when 98 Degrees came, they were backstage and I was guessing their zodiac signs and fake reading their palms. They got a kick out of that. We also met the Spice Girls and one of my cast members kept messing up on his lines because he was so excited to meet them. He could NOT get his line out, but they were so sweet about it.”
The Diversity Among The Cast Is What Made The Show Genuinely Funny
AR: “We were a melting pot of ages and nationalities—let alone different cultures. At the time, I was the only one from New York. Everyone else was from Cali, ATL, and Chi-Town when it came to my cast. We were all so different but the formula and our frequencies just worked. We had the right recipe. The alignment was perfect. We shared different views, religions, and beliefs BUT at the end of the day, we always came together as a collective and put our best foot forward and put on a fun and entertaining show for all ages.”
CK: “The diversity in the cast made a huge difference because there were things that the writers just couldn’t write in … little nuances that they were not aware of, especially from myself and Keenan. I’m from the Bronx and Native American Afro-Latina, so I was able to bring so much to the table. We would bring cultural nuances and it was celebrated. With ‘Inconvenience Store,’ there was a cultural aspect that people are more familiar with now, but back then they really weren’t. But it’s cool that it was celebrated in that way, it was a lot of fun.”
Their Influence On ‘90s Kids Was So Much Bigger Than They Knew
DT: “'90s kids love All That. It was their show. It was based in hip-hop and urban culture from the jump, so I think that opened the door at first. Having role models like Kenan, Kel, Nick, and Christy helped a whole lot, too. Funny, kind, outspoken, and relatable kids who made you think, ‘Hey, maybe we can do that, too.’”
CK: “People tell me, especially Black ‘90s kids who were watching for my seasons, they’re like, ‘We really paid attention to you because you were the only Black girl!’ I was there to represent them in a way and I didn’t even realize it at the time because social media was not a thing. You didn’t have that kind of contact with your fans. But everyone had a special connection to the show, everyone remembers the logo and that very iconic theme song sung by three Black women. It’s very interesting to grasp it all from that perspective since I was the only woman of color when I joined.”
AR: “It was a pure reflection of the decade, it showed it didn't matter what race you were … you could always have fun. We had a cast that allowed kids of all nationalities to be able to relate to us. I am Irish, Italian and Dominican, and a few other things so I am just one person, but with six other kids of different backgrounds, the sky was the limit for kids being able to relate.”
CK: “All That showcased the unity that we all wanted, needed and still need in a very humorous way. We brought each other together in a very lighthearted way. With Amanda [Bynes] and I doing ‘Whateverrr!’ you didn’t see a Black girl and a white girl, you just saw these two insane girls who loved the same guys. We both loved Leonardo DiCaprio and we both loved Kobe Bryant! I think we pushed a lot of boundaries.”
AT: “I hope that fans new & OG continue to fall in love with the iconic and nostalgic show All That that is still re-airing on Splat and Nickelodeon and that was a show for all ages made for kids but enjoyed by adults as well.”
DT: “It's the SNL for kids. A show that brought everyone together with jokes catered to all kids, not just some. I would hope that it made people who might not have had much interaction with people of color understand that we are all humans—and that all we need to laugh, too.”

Mitchell was just as excited to share the news that he was returning to the show that gave him his big break, tweeting minutes after Thompson. "The cats officially out the bag. Let’s do this @kenanthompson," Mitchell tweeted. "It’s bout to be Lit! We Back!"
Kenan Thompson, who will serve as executive producer of the forthcoming series, revealed to Page Six at the Writers Guild Awards on Sunday (February 17, 2019) night at the Edison Ballroom that all cast members from the original series are welcome to return.
“Whoever’s down to come do it, we would love to have them in my opinion,” Thompson shared. “I know Kel [Mitchell’s] coming back, and I remember working close [sic] with Josh Server as well. I think all the old cast members should come support the new cast members. That’s just how it should go.”
Mitchell’s rep didn’t immediately return Page Six’s request for comment.
Although Thompson, 40, who currently appears on Saturday Night Live, will be running the ship behind-the-scenes, he teased a potential appearance on the Nickelodeon sketch comedy.
“I’m not exactly sure about that yet because I’m all tied up with my NBC stuff,” he shared, “but hopefully we’ll figure it out soon.”
Former cast member Danny Tamberelli also told Page Sixthat he thought the All That revival was a fantastic idea.
“I think it’s awesome!” said Tamberelli, 37. “All That was a show that reached out to so many kids from all different backgrounds and brought them all together through laughter.”
He added, “I mean, all kids agree that feet and cheese are funny punchlines.”
Tamberelli also revealed that he would love to be involved with the new show if asked!
The original All That series aired on Nickelodeon from 1994-2005. The all-new All That, featuring a new cast as well as appearances from former cast members, is set to premiere during Summer 2019.
Whilst Kenan has gone on to become SNL's longest-running cast member, Kel has stayed close to his Nickelodeon roots, guest starring on an episode of Sam & Cat, then starring in Nickelodeon's popular sitcom Game Shakers.
Of course, it’s not exactly a Kenan & Kel reunion or a Good Burger sequel, but at least the duo will be back together in some shape or form.

Fans of Nickelodeon Movies' cult classic Good Burger film should look away now!
A fan of ’90s nostalgia contacted Jalopnik earlier this week to share a vague Facebook Marketplace ad for a 1975 AMC Pacer described simply as “Good Burger mobile from Nickelodeon's 1997 movie Good Burger” [sic] and yeah, there’s really no mistaking this particular Pacer despite the fact that it looks like it’s been sitting in an oceanside parking lot since the movie came out.
Released in 1997, Good Burger was based on a sketch from All That, Nickelodeon's Saturday Night Live for kids. In the movie, Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell star as Dexter and Ed, who kids who work at a homely burger joint called Good Burger and end up in some kind of battle with a flashy new burger establishment across the road.
The movie also starred Sinbad, as well as the iconic AMC Pacer with a giant burger mounted on its hood, known as the (what else?) Burgermobile.
Sadly, the Burgermobile has seen better days. Although its hamburger is still (barely) intact, the pickle hubcaps are missing.
It's currently unknown whether this is the official Good Burger Mobile. And if so, is it screen used or made for promotional uses. The International Hamburger Hall of Fame and the Hamburger Museum say they have bought the car in a effort to save it from the scrap yard, however, movie companies sometimes make multiple versions of cars for use in production as well as for promotions.
The Burgermobile is for sale in Florida now for a cool $10,000 USD. Then Jalopnik replied to the ad and got a little background from Karl, who’s selling the car–apparently his dad “bought it off someone who I think won it in a contest after the movie release” approximately 12 years ago. As you can tell from the pictures, it hasn’t moved a whole lot since then.
Looks like a pretty gnarly restoration project, but then again, ’90s nostalgia is so strong right now that I bet somebody will step up to take this on. How hard can it be to find Pacer parts?
Sadly, its a fate far too common with classic movie cars. The iconic Ecto 1 from Ghostbusters was also left to rot, until it was restored to promote Ghostbusters: The Video Game.
Did you hear? All That is coming back, with a brand-new series executive produced by OG cast members Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell! See the following link for more info!: http://po.st/AllThatRevival
