Nickelodeon is Reviving 'All That' with Kenan Thompson as Executive Producer | Nick Upfront 2019 ---ScRaBBlE

Nickelodeon Is Reviving All That With Kenan Thompson as Executive Producer

Fresh out the box, stop, look and watch!

All That was the show that kept on giving to Nickelodeon over the course of a decade in the 1990s and 2000s. Now the company’s new president thinks a revival of the sketch-comedy series could be all that — and more.

Nickelodeon will revive the program — a Saturday Night Live for the tween set — with an all-new cast. But the show will have callbacks to its past as well. Kenan Thompson, the long-running SNL cast member who got his start on television when All That launched in 1994, will serve as an executive producer. Nickelodeon expects some former cast members to make appearances in the series.

The sketch comedy show “stayed in the zeitgeist for many years,” Brian Robbins, president of Nickelodeon, told Variety. “People are really fond of it.” One regular sketch, Good Burger, featuring Kel Mitchell, was set in a fast-food restaurant with a clueless cashier, and served up the premise for an original movie in 1997, starring Thompson and Mitchell. Kids also loved recurring characters like “Walter the Earboy,” "Everyday French with Pierre Escargot," "Vital Information with Lori Beth Denberg," “The Spice Boys,” and “Baggin’ Saggin’ Barry.”

The cast of Nickelodeon's "All That" appear on stage for a taped segment in front of an audience in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles . From left are Kyle Sullivan, Jamie Spears (the younger sibling of superstar Britney Spears), Giovonne Samuels, Shane Lyons, Bryan Hearne and Lisa Renee Foiles. Spears expects to act for awhile before launching a singing careerBRITNEYS SISTER, LOS ANGELES, USA

Thompson is one of the people who remembers the series fondly. “It means everything to me,” he told Variety. “It was my first job that I ever had. It gave me an opportunity.”

Robbins was a co-creator and an executive producer of the original run of the series, which during its time featured Thompson, Kel Mitchell, Amanda Bynes, Nick Cannon and Jamie Spears, among others. Many of the cast members went on to star in other landmark Nickelodeon series, such as The Amanda Show, Kenan & Kel and The Nick Cannon Show. Other regular stars included Lori Beth Denberg, Danny Tamberelli (Pete & Pete), and Josh Server. Thompson said many of the show’s stars remain close more than a decade after “All That” went off the air.

An All That revival would continue Nickelodeon’s recent efforts to dig into its past to help secure its future. In recent years, Nickelodeon executives have tested new editions of one-time stalwarts like Hey Arnold! and Legends of the Hidden Temple, sometimes as movie specials. Such programs can spur viewing by both parents and children, as one generation tries to interest another in favorite pieces of popular culture.

“We think there’s a great opportunity to find the next pool of stars,” said Robbins. “We want to bring the show back in a real fun way. This summer, we are going to bring back a lot of the original cast and the cast through the years, and let them introduce the new cast of All That to the world.” He suggested the program would be “a sort of mash-up of some of the old sketches and a lot of new sketches.”

For Thompson, the idea, pitched to him directly by Robbins, was a “no-brainer.” Thompson said he and Robbins have “always remained close. He is one of my second fathers.” Thompson didn’t hesitate when Robbins suggested he work on the new program as an executive producer.

“Every time he does that, he has been right on the money. He has done it infinite times in my life,” Thompson said.

Thompson is not giving up his day job on Saturday Night Live, however, and he acknowledges “my time is limited.” But he expects to have some say over the show’s tone and casting, among other things. “If I’m not at the table read, I’ll be on the phone during the table read,’ he said. “I’ll be around.” He hopes the program will have a similar role at the Viacom-owned kids’ outlet. “I think it should be a staple show for Nickelodeon,” he said.

Thompson is also working with kids media brand Pocket.watch and Viacom to develop Skoogle, a kids sketch comedy show created by and starring the Nickelodeon alum Kenan Thompson for Nickelodeon.

Skoogle will feature Thompson as the voice of the titular Skoogle, an Siri/Alexa-like digital assistant for kids who has been created to help with their daily problems. Along with his cast of kid entrepreneur inventors, Skoogle will satirize everything from service apps to streaming entertainment to social media. The series marks the first major series production for pocket.watch.

There is currently no word whether the iconic All That theme song, performed by TLC will also be returning.

Jeremy Zuckerman Provides Update on Netflix's Live-Action 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Series ---ScRaBBlE

Ever since Netflix first announced plans to produce a live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon's beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender series and franchise, further details about the production have been scarce. We know the animated series’ original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino are directly involved, and we know they’re determined to avoid the pitfalls of M. Night Shyamalan’s movie adaptation. We also know that the cartoon’s head writer Aaron Ehasz isn't directly involved in this version — he’s busy with his own Netflix animated series, The Dragon Prince. However, a new update has come through for its adaptation at last!

Over on Twitter, the team at Discussing Film hit up fans with an update on Netflix's live-action plans for Avatar: The Last Airbender. The series, which is heavily inspired by anime, was optioned for a live-action series last year. Now, composer Jeremy Zuckerman is opening up about the project, and he is rather optimistic.

In his recent interview, below, Zuckerman was asked about his piece in the live-action project. While the musician couldn’t say much, he did admit Avatar: The Last Airbender has a bit to go before he’ll be needed in the studio.

“I can say that I haven’t started yet. I think there is a ways to go. I know Bryan [DiMartino] posted people were hitting up like crazy about casting,” Zuckerman said.

“I’m really excited about. We’re really excited about it. Netflix seems really on-board and supportive. I think they’re really committed to getting it right,” he continued before adding, “It feels nice to have that support.”

So far, Netflix has been cagey about details on the live-action venture, but fans know some important crew members working on the project. The creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will be involved, and they released a joint statement about the show.

"We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast,” the duo stressed.

With an eye on authentic casting, fans are hopeful this live-action take will avoid the pitfalls M. Night Shyamalan made all those years ago with his take on the franchise. So, here’s to hoping Aang and the gang get it right when they step into the world of streaming down the line.

Casting for the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender begins later this year, and fans will also be able to have the chance to audition in a open casting call.

So, are you excited for the live-action take? Sound off in the comments below!

For those of you unfamiliar with Avatar: The Last Airbender, the series screened on Nickelodeon between February 2005 and July 2008. Its complex story and diverse stars earned the series’ acclaim.

The series was nominated for—and won—Annie Awards, Genesis Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Peabody Award. Avatar: The Last Airbender follows the adventures of the main protagonist Aang and his friends, who must save the world by defeating Fire Lord Ozai and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation.

The Last Airbender’s story coupled with its anime-inspired artwork helped the franchise grow a loyal fanbase, and the series has continued to expand with various comics over the years. Recently, it was announced a young adult novel focusing on Avatar Kyoshi would be coming to the canon, leaving fans eager to learn more about the infamous warrior's tenure.

Konietzko and DiMartino also created a follow-up series, The Legend of Korra, that returned to the world of Avatar years after Aang’s death to follow Korra, his successor as Avatar. That series ran between 2012-2014. The Legend of Korra universe will also expanded with a new graphic novel trilogy.

'You’ll Hear Me in the Wind' | Listen to a Track from Steven Price’s Score for ‘Wonder Park’ | Nickelodeon Movies ---ScRaBBlE

To celebrate the release Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures' brand-new movie Wonder Park, Collider has unveiled a fantastic first listen at the film's musical score from Oscar-winning composer Steven Price’s work!

Price, of course, won the Academy Award for Best Original Score for his work on Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity, and his career is full of impressive work across a variety of genres on films like The World’s End, Fury, and the docuseries Our Planet.

Price’s latest effort is in the realm of feature animation on Wonder Park. The film tells the story of an optimistic young girl named June who discovers an incredible amusement park hidden in the woods. It’s in a state of disarray, but is full of fantastical rides and talking animals, and June discovers it was created by her imagination, and she’s the only one who can fix it.

Below, you can listen to a track from Price’s score called “You’ll Hear Me in the Wind”, which is quite sweet and dreamlike, with a dose of whimsy and wonder thrown in for good measure. Indeed, in parts it’s almost like the music you’d hear at Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park, which is rightly fitting with the subject matter at hand here.

Wonder Park opens in theaters on March 15th, and the soundtrack is available to purchase now!

Steven Price - You'll Hear Me In The Wind

Wonder Park is really a story about imagination. June and her mom spend countless hours imagining, designing and building models of an amazing park, complete with rides such as Fireworks Falls and the Skyflingers, all powered by the magical Clockwork Swings, the heart of the park. The park is their game, their shared project taking over their whole house and sometimes the whole neighbourhood, and, as the film progresses, we see June entering this world for real.

Musically, the film couldn’t have been a more exciting thing to write for. I needed to capture the sense of this park, and June herself, full of fun and imagination, and also how the state of the park reflected June’s emotions. It seemed an opportunity to deliver something really thematic. The principle two themes of the film are the Park theme, where I really wanted to capture something classic, melodic and celebratory, a kind of fanfare for the imagination if you like, and the Mom theme, a more introspective theme that helps us connect with June’s emotions as the story develops. Also needed were motifs for some of the principal characters in the park itself, the team of animals led by Peanut the Monkey that all work together to save the park from the darkness that envelopes it. Underpinning all this, and central to the film and its score, is the idea and the sound of the Clockwork Swings.

Wonder Park features a all-star voice cast, including: Matthew Broderick (Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Rules Don’t Apply, The Producers) as Dad, Jennifer Garner (Nine Lives, The Tribes of Palos Verdes) as Mom, Kenan Thompson (All That, Kenan & Kel, Good Burger, SNL) as Gus, Ken Jeong (Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, Bob’s Burgers) as Cooper, Mila Kunis (Family Guy, A Bad Moms Christmas) as Greta, John Oliver (The Daily Show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, live-action Lion King) as Steve, Ken Hudson Campbell, who voices Boomer the Bear, Sofia Mali as Young June, Brianna Denski (Momsters: When Moms Go Bad) as June, Oev Michael Urbas as Banky, Norbert Leo Butz (Bloodline) as Peanut, Kate McGregor-Stewart as Aunt Albertine, Kevin Chamberlin as Uncle Tony, Kath Soucie (Rugrats, Hey Arnold!) as Bus Counselor Shannon, and Noen Perez as Chatty Kid.

To further celebrate the release of Wonder Park, Collider's Adam Chitwood got the wonderful chance to interview composer Steven Price about his work on the movie, which you can check out below!:

Composer Steven Price on ‘Wonder Park’, Working in Animation, and Edgar Wright’s Next Film

Composer Steven Price first hit most people’s radars when he won the Oscar for Best Original Score for his terrific work on Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity. But film music aficionados took notice a few years earlier with his major release debut on Joe Cornish’s cult hit Attack the Block. Price’s compositions feel wholly unique and somewhat offbeat, but never delve into electronica muddiness. There’s always a musical rhythm pulsing through, and it’s what makes his work on films like The World’s End, Baby Driver, and Fury so striking.

Most recently, Price made a first for himself by working in the world of feature animation on the upcoming film Wonder Park. The Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Studios animated film tells the story of an optimistic young girl named June who discovers an incredible amusement park hidden in the woods. It’s in a state of disarray, but is full of fantastical rides and talking animals, and June discovers it was created by her imagination, and she’s the only one who can fix it.

In anticipation of the film’s release in theaters on March 15th, I recently got the opportunity to speak to Price about his work on the movie. He explained why he was drawn to the feature animation medium in the first place, the surprising ways in which the project evolved over time and the opportunities that presented, and more. Additionally, given Price’s relationship with Edgar Wright, I had to ask if he’s involved in Wright’s next project—which is reportedly an original psychological thriller. While Price couldn’t divulge details, it does sound like he’ll be composing the score for that film, which comes as very welcome good news.

Check out the full interview below, and if you missed our exclusive debut of a track from Price’s score, [scroll above]. Wonder Park is in theaters on March 15th and the soundtrack is available now.

How did you first get involved in Wonder Park and what made you want to be a part of the project?

STEVEN PRICE: Scoring an animation had always been something I was really interested in doing… throughout my life I’ve always loved animated films and latterly its been something I’ve enjoyed shared with my kids, so I was always hoping to get an opportunity to work on an animation of some kind. I’d done a couple of animated shorts in the UK, but was constantly hassling my agents to see if we could find a feature for me to really get stuck into. In the end, I was lucky in that this one came to me when the filmmakers had heard some music I’d written for a BBC show called The Hunt in 2015. The stuff I’d done for that was very thematic and yet quite textural, and that opened a door for this, we met up and talked about the project, and I was thrilled to sign up. It’s been a load of fun.

When work first began on the film, what were some of the big ideas you wanted to capture with your music?

PRICE: The key thing was that this is a story all about imagination. The park is the work of the lead character June, who creates all of these incredible designs for an amusement park, building it and playing it as a game with her mom. Every aspect of the park is full of ideas; there’s a ride called Fireworks Falls, a Zero G Land and all sorts of things along those lines. Kind of the place you’d love to have gone to as a kid. So, musically, I had the opportunity to really shoot for big thematic ideas. I wanted to capture the feeling of a classic theme park, this feeling of the park being filled with flowing music, but also find the characters of the distinct zones within it. Combine that with a touch of magic as we learn that the park has come to life, and it gave a huge amount of opportunities musically. I never thought I’d be experimenting with recording the sound of fireworks for a percussion track, but this was the sort of project where you could get into that!

Image via Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies

You’ve worked on a number of diverse projects in your career, but never an animated feature film. What surprised you about the process of working in animation that you didn’t quite anticipate?

PRICE: The length of the process, and the way they whole thing would evolve in both big and subtle ways was really interesting to me. What was cool was how the process kind of rewards constantly going back and studying the changes. Every time I revisited a piece, there’d be a new bit of animation, perhaps a tiny little facial gesture that suddenly had more depth and subtly tweaked the emotion, or a lighting change that made me want to reach for different instruments to keep the music bonded to the picture. I kind of felt that the way the animation evolved suited the way I think musically, in that I’m often gradually developing the music from quite rough outlines into something with a lot of textures and shifts of color. It was a really interesting process, and the film seemed to keep offering up new inspirations.

Was there a theme or motif you created for Wonder Park that you’re particularly proud of?

PRICE: The whole park runs on the power of June’s invention, The Clockwork Swings, and we see these first in toy form, and then in the “real” park on a massive scale. I wanted to have the whole score feel like it was being powered by these whirring cogs and gears, whether they be the small homemade clockwork versions of June’s original model, or the huge towers of the park itself. So I built various motifs played on all manner of bells, chimes, anything metallic. We literally filled the recording stage at Sony in LA with all of these instruments and would work through to see which combination would work for each scene. The motif is an intrinsic part of the main park theme that is heard throughout the movie, but, crucially, when the park is failing, and things are not working, the bells and their patterns would be stretched and morphed around, hopefully sounding as damaged as the park looks. Its often low in the texture, but there’s some element of the clockwork swings working, or at least trying to work, throughout the movie. So that was something I enjoyed working on. Also, speaking thematically, June herself has a theme that had to undergo a lot of changes as her journey progresses , and I’m proud of that emotional side of the score.

Image via Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies

I’m a huge fan of your collaborations with Edgar Wright—your score for The World’s End is tremendous, and I love that movie to pieces. Will you be reteaming with Edgar on his new horror film, and if so, what can you tease about that project?

PRICE: Thanks for the kind words! Working with Edgar has been one of the great treats of my life. He’s a genius, and he loves music and uses it brilliantly in his project. I’ve got a load of great memories working on projects right back to Scott Pilgrim, through The World’s End, and then finally finishing Baby Driver after being involved in it from it’s earliest drafts back in 2007 or thereabouts was a massive thrill too. It’s a bit early for me to talk about anything to do with Edgar’s next project, but obviously it’s exciting and I can’t wait to see what he shoots. All I can say is that I have read a script, and it’s going to be brilliant.

‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ Honors Creator's Original Vision, Sees Global Success ---ScRaBBlE

Decades after the Chipmunks made their small-screen debut on CBS in 1961, Alvin, Simon and Theodore are still leaving an indelible mark on the television landscape and adhering to creator Ross Bagdasarian Sr.'s original vision.

“It was important to my dad that there be a show that was, hopefully, entertaining, but he wanted it to be non-violent,” Bagdasarian’s son Ross Jr., co-owner of Bagdasarian Productions, tells Variety.

Designed to be a gentler alternative to the Looney Tunes, The Alvin Show set the basic look and personas of the Chipmunks, as well as a tone that would prove to be timeless. But over the years, the design of the characters and types of stories told have been modernized to better speak to the current audience.

Today’s Alvin and the Chipmunks, titled ALVINNN!!! and the Chipmunks, launched on over 70 Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. channels worldwide in 2015 and tells tales of bullying, technology and not getting along with siblings. It also relies heavily on the Chipettes, a girl group that was first introduced in the 1980s NBC series of the same name.

Janice Karman, co-owner of Bagdasarian Prods., says creating the Chipettes was “really a pragmatic decision to allow for more story and covering a lot of the girl songs.”

It also undoubtedly broadened the audience. Alvin and the Chipmunks now airs in countries as diverse as the U.K., Ireland, the Philippines, Indonesia and the U.S. and has been renewed for two more seasons, which like previous seasons, will also air on Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. channels globally.

Alvin and the Chipmunks is such a globally recognized franchise that has entertained audiences for decades, and our collaboration with Bagdasarian Prods. has continued to bring a fresh new take on the characters and their world to our audience,” says Layla Lewis, Senior Vice President (SVP) of Global Acquisitions and Content Partnerships at Nickelodeon.

Originally created in 1958, Alvin and the Chipmunks is celebrating its 60th anniversary alvinversary this year. As part of the celebrations, Alvin and the Chipmunks today (Thursday, March 14, 2019) received their star on Hollywood Walk of Fame!
