ABSTRACT

A new genus of freshwater crab, Karkata gen. nov., with two species, K. ghanarakta sp. nov. (type species) and K. kusumbha sp. nov., and two new species each of Pilarta Bahir and Yeo, 2007 (P. aroma sp. nov. and P. punctatissima sp. nov.) and Cylindrotelphusa Alcock, 1909 (C. breviphallus sp. nov. and C. longiphallus sp. nov.), are described from Kerala, India. Additionally, C. granulata (Pillai, 1951) comb. et stat. nov. is recognised as a distinct species. Karkata gen. nov. is distinguished from other Indian gecarcinucid genera by a suite of carapace and gonopod characters, including a moderately arched, smooth carapace, the presence of a prominent suture between male thoracic sternites 2, 3 and 3, 4, the absence of a flagellum on the third maxilliped exopod, a very short terminal segment of the male first gonopod (G1), and a short distal segment of the male second gonopod (G2). Karkata ghanarakta sp. nov. is differentiated from K. kusumbha sp. nov. by the shape of the G1 subterminal segment and its live colouration. Pilarta punctatissima sp. nov. is distinct among the congeners mainly by its densely punctate carapace, densely setose anterolateral and posterolateral margins of the carapace, stouter G1 terminal segment, and relatively long G2 distal segment whereas P. aroma sp. nov. can be separated from P. anuka Bahir and Yeo, 2007 by its relatively smooth carapace, deep H-shaped groove, relatively long G1 terminal segment, and almost straight outer margins of the G1 terminal and subterminal segments. Cylindrotelphusa breviphallus sp. nov. is differentiated from C. longiphallus sp. nov. and C. steniops (Alcock, 1909) by its stout G1, with a stout, short terminal segment. Cylindrotelphusa longiphallus sp. nov. is distinguished from the congeners by its shallow, narrow cervical grooves and relatively slender ambulatory legs. An identification key to the species of Karkata, Pilarta and Cylindrotelphusa is provided.

Karkata ghanarakta sp. nov.

Etymology The species epithet, ghanarakta, is derived from the Sanskrit for ‘maroon’, referring to the maroon colouration of the live crabs. Used as a noun in apposition.

Karkata kusumbha sp. nov. 

Etymology The species epithet, kusumbha (Sanskrit for ‘safflower’), alludes to the orange-red colouration of the live crabs that resemble the colour of the flowers of safflower. Used as a noun in apposition.

Pilarta Bahir and Yeo, 2007 

Pilarta aroma sp. nov. 

Etymology ‘Aroma’ means ‘hairless’ in Sanskrit. Used as a noun in apposition, alluding to the smooth or hairless carapace and chelipeds of the crab.

Pilarta punctatissima sp. nov. 

Etymology The species epithet, punctatissima, is derived from the Latin for ‘most punctate’, referring to the densely punctate carapace of the crab.

Cylindrotelphusa Alcock, 1909 

Cylindrotelphusa breviphallus sp. nov. 

Etymology The species name is derived from the Latin ‘brevi’ for short, and the Greek ‘phallus’ for the penis, used as per the general convention in brachyuran names, referring to the short male gonopods (intromittent organs that are not analogous to a penis) of the crab. The name is used as a noun in apposition.

Abstract

A new genus and new species of tree crab is described from the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot in Kerala, southern India. Kani maranjandun gen., n. sp., is substantially different from all congeners in a suite of characters, notably the diagnostic carapace and male abdominal structure, as well as the conspicuously elongated ambulatory legs. The species is wholly arboreal, living in tree-hollows or the canopy.

Etymology: The genus is named after the people of the Kanikkaran (also known as Kani) tribe in Kerala, who helped in the collection of tree crab from near their hamlet. India’s Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve, southern Western Ghats is home to the largest population of this ancient Indian tribe. The gender of the genus name is neuter

Kani maranjandu n. gen., n. sp. 

Etymology: The species name is derived from the Malayalam word mara for “tree” and njandu for “crab”. The name is used as a noun in apposition.

Ecology: Kani maranjandu n. gen., n. sp. is the first tree-climbing crab reported from India. Morphological features such as distinctly long legs with hooked dactyli are clearly arboreal adaptations. The type series was collected from the tree hollows of a Bedda nut tree, Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb. (Combretaceae).  ....

When approached by members of the Kani tribe, the crabs climb up the trunk of Cinnamomum verum, the tribesmen then cut a series of holes in trees to climb up after them.

Abstract

A new species of lowland freshwater crab of the family Gecarcinucidae, Salangathelphusa peractio, is described from Langkawi, an island off the northwestern coast of peninsular Malaysia. Salangathelphusa peractio sp. n. can be separated from S. brevicarinata (Hilgendorf, 1882) in having a proportionately broader external orbital tooth, a distinctly concave posterolateral margin, and the terminal segment of the male first gonopod is not distinctly bent laterally outwards; and from S. anophrys (Kemp, 1923) by its more quadrate carapace and the terminal segment of the male first gonopod possessing a relatively longer and less curved distal part. This is sixth wholly freshwater brachyuran species known from the island.

Type species: Parathelphusa salangensis Ortmann, 1893, by original designation.

Salangathelphusa peractio sp. n.

Diagnosis: Carapace subquadrate, broader than long (Fig. 1); external orbital tooth broadly triangular, outer margin twice length of inner margin (Fig. 1); all ambulatory legs relatively short, merus not elongate (Fig. 1A); male pleonal somite 6 subquadrate, lateral margins gently sinuous, distal margin slightly shorter than proximal margin (Fig. 2C); posterolateral margin concave (Fig. 1); G1 with stout subterminal segment, terminal segment with tip directed upwards towards buccal cavity (Fig. 3A–E).

Etymology: The species name is derived from the Latin word “peractio” which means “ending of a story”. It alludes to the discovery of the present freshwater species, arguably the last one the author will describe from Langkawi, ending his 30-year history with the island. Gender feminine.

Abstract

A new species of gecarcinucid freshwater crab of the genus Oziotelphusa Müller, 1887, is described from stationary or slow-flowing bodies of water in Keeriparai near Nagercoil, in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India. Oziotelphusa ravi, new species, is distinguished from its congeners by several distinct characters: the median tooth of the posterior margin of epistome forms a distinct bilobed tip in frontal view, the male pleonal somite 6 is narrowly trapezoidal and slightly wider than long with the lateral margins concave, the terminal segment of the male first gonopod is distinctly bent laterally (along the longitudinal axis) at an angle of about 45°, and the proximal part of the outer margin of the subterminal segment of the male first gonopod has a prominent deep concavity.

A new species of the freshwater crab genus Sundathelphusa Bott, 1969 (Gecarcinucidae) is described from the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines. The Philippine Islands host the greatest species diversity of this genus, although only four species were previously known from Mindanao. The new species is most similar to S. mistio (Rathbun, 1904) and S. montanoanus (Rathbun, 1904) in the general carapace outline and leg proportions, but it can be distinguished by features of the carapace, thoracic sternum and gonopods. With this discovery, there are now 29 species of Sundathelphusa known from the Philippines.

[Crustacea • 2018] The Freshwater Crabs (Decapoda, Potamidae) of Macau, with the Description of Nanhaipotamon macau and the Redescription of Nanhaipotamon wupingense ---ScRaBBlE

Abstract

Four species of freshwater crabs from three genera and two families (Cantopotamon hengqinense Huang, Ahyong & Shih, 2017, Nanhaipotamon guangdongense Dai, 1997, Nanhaipotamon macau sp. n., and Somanniathelphusa zanklon Ng & Dudgeon, 1992) are documented from Macau for the first time. One new species, Nanhaipotamon macau sp. n., is described. The large flap on the male first gonopod terminal segment sets it apart from all other known congeners except N. wupingense Cheng, Yang, Zhong & Li, 2003, from Fujian. Characters of the carapace, male first gonopod and size, however, clearly differentiate these two species. Preliminary genetic studies also suggest that the two are not closely related. A neotype is designated for N. wupingense. The taxonomic status of Nanhaipotamon guangdongense is also discussed. Notes on the general biology and conservation status of these crabs are also included.

Diagnosis: Carapace broader than long, regions indistinct, dorsal surface convex, anterolateral region weakly rugose (Figs 3A, 4B); postorbital cristae sharp, laterally expanded, almost fused with epibranchial teeth and epigastric cristae (Figs 3A, 4B); external orbital angle sharply triangular, outer margin gently convex to almost straight, separated from anterolateral margin by conspicuous gap (Figs 3A, B, 4B); sub-orbital regions covered by sparse low granules, pterygostomial regions covered with short rows of a few rounded granules; sub-hepatic regions covered with lined striae (Fig. 3B); maxilliped III exopod reaching to proximal one-third of merus with short flagellum (Fig. 5A); female vulva ovate, medium-sized, positioned closely to one another (Fig. 4D); male pleon triangular, lateral margins almost straight (Fig. 3C); G1 slender, subterminal segment tapering distally, terminal segment large, distally expanded, distal margin laminar, apex blunt, directed outward (Figs 5C–E, 6A–C). G2 basal segment subovate (Fig. 5B).

Etymology: This species is named after the type locality, Macau; used as a noun in apposition.

Habitat: Nanhaipotamon macau sp. n. is a typical semi-terrestrial species that burrows in wet soil in the bank adjacent to hill streams. It was sympatric with Cantopotamon hengqinense at three localities. 

Distribution: Coloane, Macau.

Abstract

The taxonomy of three morphologically related and endemic genera of the northern Western Ghats (Ghatiana Pati & Sharma, 2014, Gubernatoriana Bott, 1970, and Inglethelphusa Bott, 1970) is re-assessed to accommodate several new taxa. We describe a new genus, Sahyadriana gen. nov. and its five new species [S. billyarjani sp. nov., S. pachyphallus sp. nov., S. sahyadriensis sp. nov. (type species), S. tenuiphallus sp. nov., and S. woodmasoni sp. nov.]. Additionally, three new species each of Ghatiana (Gh. botti sp. nov., Gh. pulchra sp. nov., and Gh. rathbunae sp. nov.) and Gubernatoriana (Gu. longipes sp. nov., Gu. marleshwarensis sp. nov., and Gu. wallacei sp. nov.) are described. Five species previously in Gubernatoriana are now transferred to Sahyadriana gen. nov., viz. S. alcocki (Pati in Pati, Thackeray & Khaire, 2016) comb. nov., S. pilosipes (Alcock, 1909) comb. nov., S. thackerayi (Pati in Pati, Thackeray & Khaire, 2016) comb. nov., S. triangulus (Pati & Sharma, 2014) comb. nov., and S. waghi (Pati in Pati, Thackeray & Khaire, 2016) comb. nov. Gubernatoriana basalticola Klaus, Fernandez & Yeo, 2014, is transferred to Ghatiana. Inglethelphusa is still proved to be monotypic. Consequently, Ghatiana now contains eight species, three of which are new; Gubernatoriana, four species, including three new species; Inglethelphusa, one species; and Sahyadriana gen. nov., ten species, including five new species. Sahyadriana pilosipes is rediscovered more than a century after its description. All these genera can be separated from other Indian gecarcinucid crabs by the absence of a flagellum on the exopod of the third maxilliped and a very short G2. The relevant identification keys are revised. Currently, 120 species of freshwater crabs under 35 genera and two families are found in India. Kerala is the most species-rich (35 species) state in India followed by Maharashtra (29 species) and Assam (21 species). The Western Ghats of India now includes 17 genera and 58 species of gecarcinucid crabs. A checklist and distribution of Indian freshwater crabs is provided.
