ABSTRACT

The bluntnose knifefish genus Brachyhypopomus Mago-Leccia, 1994, is diagnosed from other Rhamphichthyoidea (Rhamphichthyidae + Hypopomidae) by the presence of a disk-like ossification in the anterior portion of the palatoquadrate, and by the following external characters: short snout, 18.7-32.6% of head length (vs. 33.3-68.6% in Hypopomus, Gymnorhamphichthys, Iracema, and Rhamphichthys), absence of a paired accessory electric organ in the mental or humeral region (vs. presence in Hypopygus and Steatogenys), presence of 3-4 pectoral proximal radials (vs. 5 in Akawaio), presence of the antorbital + infraorbital, and the preopercular cephalic lateral line canal bones (vs. absence in Racenisia). Brachyhypopomus cannot be diagnosed unambiguously from Microsternarchus or from Procerusternarchus on the basis of external characters alone. Brachyhypopomus comprises 28 species. Here we describe 15 new species, and provide redescriptions of all 13 previously described species, based on meristic, morphometric, and other morphological characters. We include notes on ecology and natural history for each species, and provide regional dichotomous keys and distribution maps, based on the examination of 12,279 specimens from 2,787 museum lots. A lectotype is designated for Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus (Hopkins, Comfort, Bastian & Bass, 1990). Brachyhypopomus species are abundant in shallow lentic and slow-flowing freshwater habitats from southern Costa Rica and northern Venezuela to Uruguay and northern Argentina. Species diversity is highest in Greater Amazonia, where 20 species occur: Brachyhypopomus alberti, new speciesBrachyhypopomus arrayae, new species, and Brachyhypopomus cunia, new species, in the upper rio Madeira drainage; Brachyhypopomus batesi, new species, in the central Amazon and rio Negro; B. beebei, B. brevirostrisBrachyhypopomus regani, new speciesBrachyhypopomus sullivani, new species, and B. walteri, widespread through the Amazon and Orinoco basins and the Guianas; Brachyhypopomus belindae, new species, in the central Amazon basin; Brachyhypopomus benjamini, new species, and Brachyhypopomus verdii, new species, in the upper Amazon basin; B. bennetti, in the upper, central, and lower Amazon, lower Tocantins, and upper Madeira basins; B. bullocki in the Orinoco, Negro and Essequibo drainages; B. diazi in the Orinoco Llanos; Brachyhypopomus flavipomus, new species, and Brachyhypopomus hamiltoni, new species, in the central and upper Amazon basin; Brachyhypopomus hendersoni, new species, in the central Amazon, lower Negro and Essequibo basins; B. pinnicaudatus in the central and lower Amazon, lower, upper Madeira, lower Tocantins and Mearim basins, and coastal French Guiana; and Brachyhypopomus provenzanoi, new species, in the upper Orinoco and upper Negro basins. Five species are known from the Paraná-Paraguay-Uruguay basin and adjacent southern Atlantic drainages: B. bombilla in the lower Paraná, upper, central, and lower Paraguay, Uruguay and Patos-Mirim drainages; B. brevirostris in the upper Paraguay basin; B. draco in the lower Paraná, lower Paraguay, Uruguay, Patos-Mirim, and Tramandaí basins; B. gauderio in the lower Paraná, upper, central, and lower Paraguay, Uruguay, Patos-Mirim and Tramandaí basins; and B. walteri in the lower Paraná and upper Paraguay basins. Two species occur in small Atlantic drainages of southern Brazil: B. janeiroensis in the São João, Paraíba and small intervening drainages; and B. jureiae in the Ribeira de Iguape and Una do Prelado. One species occurs in the middle and upper São Francisco basin: Brachyhypopomus menezesi, new species. Three species occur in trans-Andean drainages: B. diazi in Caribbean drainages of northern Venezuela; B. occidentalis in Atlantic and Pacific drainages of southern Costa Rica and Panama to Darién, and the Maracaibo, Magdalena, Sinú and Atrato drainages; and Brachyhypopomus palenque, new species, in Pacific drainages of Ecuador.

RESUMO: Peixes elétricos do gênero Brachyhypopomus Mago-Leccia, 1994, são diagnosticados dos outros Rhamphichthyoidea (Rhamphichthyidae + Hypopomidae) pela presença de uma ossificação discóide na porção anterior do palatoquadrado, e pelos seguintes caracteres externos: focinho curto, 18,7-32,6% do comprimento da cabeça (vs. 33,3-68,6% em Hypopomus, Gymnorhamphichthys, Iracema e Rhamphichthys), ausência de um órgão elétrico acessório pareado na região mental ou humeral (vs. presença em Hypopygus e Steatogenys), presença de 3-4 proximais peitorais radiais (vs. 5 em Akawaio), presença do antiorbital + infraorbital, e dos canais ossificados da linha lateral da região cefálica do pré-opérculo (vs. ausência em Racenisia). Brachyhypopomus não pode ser diagnosticado de maneira não-ambígua de Microsternarchus ou Procerusternarchus, com base em caracteres de morfologia externa. Brachyhypopomus compreende 28 espécies válidas. Aqui nós descrevemos 15 espécies novas, e fornecemos a redescrição de 13 espécies previamente descritas, baseado em caracteres merísticos, morfométricos e outros caracteres morfológicos. Nós incluímos notas sobre à ecologia e história natural para cada uma das espécies, e fornecemos chaves dicotômicas regionais e mapas de distribuição baseado no exame de 12.279 espécimes de 2.787 lotes de museus. Um lectótipo é designado para Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus (Hopkins, Comfort, Bastian & Bass, 1990). Espécies de Brachyhypopomus são abundantes em habitats de águas rasas lênticas e com correntes fracas, ocorrendo do sul da Costa Rica e norte da Venezuela ao Uruguai e norte da Argentina. A diversidade de espécies é maior na Grande Amazônia, onde 20 espécies ocorrem: B. alberti, espécie nova, B. arrayae, espécie nova e B. cunia, espécie nova, na drenagem do alto rio Madeira; B. batesi, espécie nova, na Amazônia central e rio Negro; B. beebei, B. brevirostris, B. regani, espécie nova, B. sullivani, espécie nova e B. walteri, amplamente distribuídas nas bacias Amazônicas e do Orinoco, e nas Guianas; B. belindae, espécie nova, bacia Amazônica central; B. benjamini, espécie nova e B. verdii, espécie nova, na bacia do alto Amazonas; B. bennetti, no alto, médio e porções baixas da bacia Amazônica, baixo Tocantins e alto rio Madeira; B. bullocki nas drenagens do Orinoco, Negro e Essequibo; B. diazi nos Llanos do Orinoco; B. flavipomus, espécie nova e B. hamiltoni, espécie nova, no médio e alto Amazonas; B. hendersoni, espécie nova, na Amazônia central, baixo Negro e Essequibo; B. pinnicaudatus no médio e baixo Amazonas, baixo e alto Madeira, baixo Tocantins, bacia do Mearim e rios costeiros da Guiana Francesa; e B. provenzanoi, espécie nova, nas bacias do alto Orinoco e alto Negro. Duas espécies ocorrem nas drenagens costeiras do sudeste do Brasil: B. janeiroensis no São João, Paraíba e em drenagens menores nas adjacências; e B. jureiae no Ribeira de Iguape e Una do Prelado. Uma espécie ocorre no médio e alto rio São Francisco: B. menezesi, espécie nova. Três espécies ocorrem nas drenagens trans-Andinas: B. diazi nas drenagens do Caribe no norte da Venezuela; B. occidentalis nas drenagens do Atlantico e Pacífico do sul da Costa Rica e Panamá até Darién, e nas drenagens do Maracaibo, Magdalena, Sinú e Atrato; e B. palenque, espécie nova, nas drenagens do Pacífico no Equador.

ABSTRACT
A new genus of freshwater crab, Karkata gen. nov., with two speciesKghanarakta sp. nov. (type species) and Kkusumbha sp. nov., and two new species each of Pilarta Bahir and Yeo, 2007 (P. aroma sp. nov. and P. punctatissima sp. nov.) and Cylindrotelphusa Alcock, 1909 (C. breviphallus sp. nov. and C. longiphallus sp. nov.), are described from Kerala, India. Additionally, C. granulata (Pillai, 1951) comb. et stat. nov. is recognised as a distinct species. Karkata gen. nov. is distinguished from other Indian gecarcinucid genera by a suite of carapace and gonopod characters, including a moderately arched, smooth carapace, the presence of a prominent suture between male thoracic sternites 2, 3 and 3, 4, the absence of a flagellum on the third maxilliped exopod, a very short terminal segment of the male first gonopod (G1), and a short distal segment of the male second gonopod (G2). Karkata ghanarakta sp. nov. is differentiated from K. kusumbha sp. nov. by the shape of the G1 subterminal segment and its live colouration. Pilarta punctatissima sp. nov. is distinct among the congeners mainly by its densely punctate carapace, densely setose anterolateral and posterolateral margins of the carapace, stouter G1 terminal segment, and relatively long G2 distal segment whereas P. aroma sp. nov. can be separated from P. anuka Bahir and Yeo, 2007 by its relatively smooth carapace, deep H-shaped groove, relatively long G1 terminal segment, and almost straight outer margins of the G1 terminal and subterminal segments. Cylindrotelphusa breviphallus sp. nov. is differentiated from C. longiphallus sp. nov. and C. steniops (Alcock, 1909) by its stout G1, with a stout, short terminal segment. Cylindrotelphusa longiphallus sp. nov. is distinguished from the congeners by its shallow, narrow cervical grooves and relatively slender ambulatory legs. An identification key to the species of Karkata, Pilarta and Cylindrotelphusa is provided.

Etymology The species epithet, ghanarakta, is derived from the Sanskrit for ‘maroon’, referring to the maroon colouration of the live crabs. Used as a noun in apposition.

Karkata kusumbha sp. nov. 
Etymology The species epithet, kusumbha (Sanskrit for ‘safflower’), alludes to the orange-red colouration of the live crabs that resemble the colour of the flowers of safflower. Used as a noun in apposition.

Pilarta aroma sp. nov. 
Etymology Aroma’ means ‘hairless’ in Sanskrit. Used as a noun in apposition, alluding to the smooth or hairless carapace and chelipeds of the crab.

Pilarta punctatissima sp. nov. 
Etymology The species epithet, punctatissima, is derived from the Latin for ‘most punctate’, referring to the densely punctate carapace of the crab.

Cylindrotelphusa breviphallus sp. nov. 

Etymology The species name is derived from the Latin ‘brevi’ for short, and the Greek ‘phallus’ for the penis, used as per the general convention in brachyuran names, referring to the short male gonopods (intromittent organs that are not analogous to a penis) of the crab. The name is used as a noun in apposition.


Cylindrotelphusa longiphallus sp. nov. 

Etymology The species name is derived from the Latin ‘longi’ for long, and the Greek ‘phallus’ for the penis, used as per the general convention in brachyuran names, alluding to the long male gonopods (intromittent organs that are not analogous to a penis) of the crab. Abstract

Perdita subgenus Heteroperdita Timberlake, a distinctive subgenus of 22 species from the southwestern United States and adjacent Mexico, all specialists on Tiquilia (Boraginaceae), is revised. Nine new species are described: Perdita (Heteroperdita) desdemona Portman, sp. n., P. (H.) exusta Portman & Griswold, sp. n., P. (H.) hippolyta Portman & Griswold, sp. n. (male previously incorrectly described as P. pilonotata Timberlake), P. (H.) hooki Portman & Neff, sp. n., P. (H.) nuttalliae Portman, sp. n., P. (H.) prodigiosa Portman & Griswold, sp. n., P. (H.) sycorax Portman, sp. n., P. (H.) titania Portman & Griswold, sp. n., and P. (H.) yanegai Portman, sp. n. The following sexes are associated and described for the first time: the male of P. (H.) frontalis Timberlake, 1968, the female of P. (H.) optiva Timberlake, 1954, and the true male of P. (H.) pilonotata Timberlake, 1980. Perdita (H.) fasciatella Timberlake, 1980 is proposed as a junior synonym of P. (H.) sexfasciata Timberlake, 1954. A neotype is designated for P. (H.) pilonotata Timberlake, 1980. Two species in particular, P. prodigiosa and P. pilonotata, are sexually dimorphic with distinctive ant-like males. Information is presented on floral relationships, phenology, and geographic distribution. Identification keys for males and females are provided.

Utah State University entomologist Zach Portman reports new, newly identified species of the bee genus in the Dec. 23, 2016, issue of  Zootaxa.

Abstract

Three species of the xenisthmid genus Xenisthmus Snyder are recorded from the Red Sea. Xenisthmus polyzonatus (Klunzinger), the only described species previously known from the Red Sea, is reported on the basis of eight specimens from Egypt, Eritrea and Saudi Arabia. Xenisthmus oligoporus new species is described from four specimens, 17.7–25.0 mm SL, from Sudan and Saudi Arabia. It is distinguished from all other congeners in having a reduced number of cephalic sensory pores and 14–15 segmented rays in the second dorsal fin. Xenisthmus balius Gill & Randall is newly recorded from the Red Sea on the basis of 13 specimens from Eritrea, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The new specimens of this species are described and compared with previously known specimens, the holotype and eight paratypes from the Arabian (= Persian) Gulf. All three species are described in detail and illustrated with colour photographs. An identification key to the species is also provided.

Xenisthmus oligoporus new species

DiagnosisXenisthmus oligoporus is distinguished from congeners in having a reduced number of cephalic sensory pores (lacking pores A, I, J, K, P and Q) and in having 14–15 segmented rays in the second dorsal fin.

Etymology. The specific epithet is from the Greek oligos (few) and poros (hole) and alludes to the relatively low number of sensory pores on the head. To be treated as a noun in apposition.

Habitat and distribution. Known from sandy areas adjacent to reefs in 6–13 m. The species is currently known from Duba, Saudi Arabia, south to the Farasan Archipelago (Figure 3).

Diagnosis. A species of Xenisthmus with the following combination of characters: dorsal-fin rays VI + I,13 (rarely I,14); anterior rim of posterior nostril raised, without well-developed flap; scales of body mainly cycloid; head and body pale, with reticulate mottling dorsally.

Habitat and distribution. Xenisthmus balius was previously known only from Jana Island, Saudi Arabia, in the Arabian Gulf. We newly record this species from the Red Sea on the basis of 13 specimens collected in Eritrea, Egypt and Saudi Arabia (Figure 3). It has been collected from sandy areas adjacent to coral rubble and reefs in 1.5– 17 m.

Diagnosis. A species of Xenisthmus with the following combination of characters: second dorsal-fin rays usually I,11 (rarely I,12); anal-fin rays I,10–11; tongue rounded to truncate; and posterior nostril with well-developed anterior flap.

Abstract

Recent assignment of some goniasterid-like Ophidiasteridae into the Goniasteridae has led to further re-evaluation of other ophidiasterids as possible goniasterids. This led to the discovery of new genera and species supported by a distinctive set of characteristics which support a new subfamily, the Ferdininae, a group originally outlined by Marsh and Price (1991) within the Goniasteridae. The historical Ophidiasteridae is paraphyletic and includes several nominal ophidiasterid genera (e.g., Fromia, Neoferdina, etc.). Newly described material has led to the inclusion of six genera,within this group, of which three, Bathyferdina n. gen.Eosaster n. gen., and Kanakaster n. gen.are newly describedFourteen new species in five genera are described. This includes Bathyferdina aireyae n. gen., n. sp.Eosaster nadiae n. gen., n. sp.Ferdina mena n. sp.Kanakaster balutensis n. gen., n. sp.Kanakaster convexus n. gen., n. sp.Kanakaster discus n. gen., n. sp.Kanakaster larae n. gen., n. sp.Kanakaster plinthinos n. gen., n. sp.Kanakaster solidus n. gen., n. sp.Neoferdina annae n. sp.Neoferdina antigorum, n. sp.Neoferdina momo, n. sp.Neoferdina oni, n. sp., and Paraferdina plakos, n. sp. Identification keys, synopses, and description of these taxa are included.

Long-headed pygmy grasshoppers (genus Ophiotettix Walker, 1871) from the New Guinean region (New Guinea and adjacent islands) are taxonomically and biogeographically reviewed. For Ophiotettix and the morphologically similar genera Paraspartolus Günther, 1939, Spartolus Stål, 1877 and Threciscus Bolívar, 1887 a new tribe is erected, Ophiotettigini trib. nov. This tribe is close to Clinophaestini Storozhenko, 2013, which is placed here also under Metrodorinae. Bufonidinae syn. rev. are regarded to be synonymous with Batrachideinae, not Cladonotinae, as previously considered. Statuses of currently known taxa of Ophiotettix are reviewed. The genus now includes 40 species, seven of them previously described: O. buergersi Bolívar, 1929, O. cygnicollis Walker, 1871, O. limosina (Snellen van Vollenhoven, 1865), O. lorentzi Bolívar, 1929, O. modesta Bolívar, 1929 stat. rev., O. scolopax Bolívar, 1929, O. westwoodi Bolívar, 1929 stat. rev. 33 new species are described and illustrated, namely: O. amberiana sp. nov., O. bewana sp. nov., O. bomberaiensis sp. nov., O. brevicollis sp. nov., O. cheesmanae sp. nov., O. depressa sp. nov., O. filiforma sp. nov., O. flyriveriensis sp. nov., O. fritzpahli sp. nov., O. hansscholteni sp. nov., O. imbiana sp. nov., O. kaitani sp. nov., O. karimuiensis sp. nov., O. katharinae sp. nov., O. luce sp. nov., O. meggy sp. nov., O. mountnokensis sp. nov., O. parvicollis sp. nov., O. projecta sp. nov., O. pulcherrima sp. nov., O. pushkari sp. nov., O. quateorum sp. nov., O. rebrinae sp. nov., O. roesleri sp. nov., O. rohwedderi sp. nov., O. sanguinea sp. nov., O. schapinae sp. nov., O. stallei sp. nov., O. storozhenkoi sp. nov., O. subbrevicollis sp. nov., O. telefominensis sp. nov., O. tenuis sp. nov., and O. toxopei sp. nov. An annotated identification key to species is provided. Antennal morphology (especially morphology of five apical segments) is diagnostically important in the taxonomy of this group and provides the best morphological character for species delimitation. Function of modified antennae is not fully understood. Differences between species exist also in head morphology, facial colouration, and morphometrics. Pygmy Giraffhoppers are a diverse group occupying most biogeographical regions of New Guinea North of the Central range, while only few species inhabit areas south of the central range.

Abstract

The problems of identification, number and distribution of Theloderma species living in China are discussed on the base of new original morphological and molecular data collected during the last years. According to the author’s results there are six known Theloderma species living in China: Theloderma albopunctatum (Liu et Hu, 1962), Theloderma baibungense Jiang, Fei et Huang, 2007, Theloderma bicolor (Bourret, 1937), Theloderma corticale (Boulenger, 1903), Theloderma moloch (Annandale, 1912), and Theloderma rhododiscus Liu et Hu, 1962.

Theloderma corticale (Boulenger, 1903)
English name. Tonkin Bug-eyed Frog, Kwangsi Warty Treefrog.
Etymology. The specific epithet is derived from Latin “cortex,” genit. cortices or corticulus, means bark.
Distribution. Known from south China, Laos, and Vietnam.

Theloderma bicolor (Bourret, 1937)
English name. Chapa Bug-eyed Frog. 
Etymology. the specific epithet is derived from Latin “bis,” means two, twice; and color is from Latin “color,” as hue, tint or complexion.
Distribution. Northwest to central Vietnam; southwest China.


 Theloderma moloch  (Annandale, 1912)

Theloderma asperum species group, such as Theloderma albopunctatum (southern China to central Indochina), Theloderma baibungense (SE Himalaya) and T. asperum (south Indochina to Malaysian Peninsula).

Abstract

Five new species of small grass cicadas belonging to the genus Graminitigrina Ewart and Marques are described, together with detailed analyses of their calling songs. Four species occur in Queensland, Graminitigrina aurora n. sp. from eastern central Queensland near Fairbairn Dam; Graminitigrina flindensis n. sp. from central Queensland between Hughenden northwards for at least 108 km; Graminitigrina einasleighi n. sp. from near The Lynd, Einasleigh River, northeastern Queensland; Graminitigrina selwynensis n. sp. from the Selwyn Range, northwestern Queensland, at locations about 40 km east of Mount Isa and 25 km southwest of Cloncurry, this latter here transferred from G. bowensis Ewart and Marques; Graminitigrina uluruensis n. sp. from Uluru and the Olgas in southwestern Northern Territory, extending northwards through Tennant Creek and apparently further north to near Larrimah, a linear distance of approximately 1190 km. These new species bring the known Graminitigrina species to ten, all superficially similar in colour and morphology. A key to male specimens is provided for the 10 species. Additional distribution records and additional aural song recordings are presented for G. bowensis, these requiring the transfer of populations previously identified as G. bowensis from Croydon and Georgetown, northern Gulf region, to G. karumbae Ewart and Marques. Detailed comparative analyses, including NMDS analyses, of the songs of all 10 species are provided, which show that the song parameters are appropriate to distinguish the species, although some partial overlap is noted in the waveform plots between the songs of G. uluruensis n. sp. and G. flindensis n. sp. Regional variations of song parameters are noted in the calling songs of most of the species described.

Abstract
Herein we describe a new species of Teratoscincus Strauch, 1863 from remote desert areas of the Sistan and Baluchistan Province in southeastern Iran. Based on morphological characters, this species, Teratoscincus sistanense sp. n., has a close relationship with T. microlepis and is distinct from all other members of its genus by the number of small scales around the midbody. We provide information about the ecology, biology and conservation of this new species. A comparison with the other three Iranian species of Teratoscincus and an updated key to this genus in Iran are presented.

Etymology. The specific epithet is a patronym for Sistan and Baluchistan Province, southeastern Iran. 

Habitat. Teratoscincus sistanense inhabits flat terrain with a hot and dry climate. The soil texture of the habitat is sandy, with various degrees of compaction, ..... The species was observed to be active only at night. Several species of lizards (Teratoscincus bedriagai, Ophiomorous tridactylus, Eremias persica, Trapelus agilis, Eremias fasciata) and snakes (Echis carinatus and Lytorhynchus ridgewayi) occur sympatrically or syntopically with T. sistanense sp. n. 

Distribution. Teratoscincus sistanense sp. n. is known only from the type and paratype localities in Zabol County, Sistan and Baluchistan Province, southeastern Iran.
