ABSTRACT

 Zingiber alba is a new species from West Sumatra. Scaphoclamys perakensis is newly recorded species from the Eastern part of Sumatra. Detailed descriptions and photographs are given for each species.

Zingiber alba Nurainas, sp. nov 

Type: INDONESIA, Sumatra, Simanau, Solok, West Sumatra, altitude 1200 m, 21 June 2016, Nurainas 3272 (holotype ANDA, isotype BO, TAI).

 Zingiber alba differs from Zingiber acuminatum var. acutibractetatum Valeton in its apex of ligules rounded, elongated of spike, arrangement of bract at top of spike is rose-like, bract bright white, ovate with subapicalmucronate, bracteole small, white and yellow flower

Distribution: throughout West Sumatra province and Batang Gadis National Park, North Sumatra. 

Ecology: Zingiber alba grows on sandy soils along the margins of mixed evergreen forests, edges of small rivers at 500-1200 meter elevation. Etymology: the epithet specific refers to color of bract. 

Phenology: Zingiber alba was observed in flower when it was collected in February 2006 and May 2016 and fruit when it was collected in October 2014. 

Vernacular name: Penggalan (Minangkabau language).

Abstract

Calanthe cootesii M.A. Naive from Mt. Maagnaw, Kitanglad Mountain Range, Bukidnon, is described and illustrated. Morphological diagnostic characters of related species of the genus are discussed. Though similar to C. brassii Ormerod, the new species is clearly distinguished by having a marked difference in the shape of the lip and the reflexed and recurved floral segments. It is also allied to C. davaensis Ames, but the new species is clearly distinguished by having smaller and greenish flowers with an indistinct spur.

Calanthe cootesii M.A. Naive, sp. nov. 

Type: PHILIPPINES, Northern Mindanao, Bukidnon, Kitanglad Mountain Range, Mt. Maagnaw, terrestrial in mossy forest with deeply shaded locations and humid environments along the trail, elevation 2645 m, 15 April 2017, M.A. Naive 016/2017 (HOLOTYPE: CMUH00010871 with spirit collection) 

Diagnosis: Calanthe cootesii M.A. Naive is similar to Calanthe brassii Ormerod, however, it can be recognized by having a marked difference in the shape of the lip, and the midlobe which is short, bilobed and triangular. It also differs in having revolute and reflexed floral segments and by having a slightly reclinate pedicel and ovary. By having a revolute and reflexed sepals and petals, C. cootesii is allied to Calanthe davaensis, but differs significantly in smaller and greenish flowers, the shape of the floral segments, and the leaves. Also, C. cootesii is clearly distinguished from C. davaensis by having an indistinct spur (vs. distinct spur).

Etymology: Named in honour of my mentor, Jim Cootes, a distinguished Philippine native orchid expert and taxonomist.

 Ecology: Calanthe cootesii is a terrestrial understory herb, growing in leaf litter, humus-rich soils in mossy forest at an elevation between 2600–2700 metres above sea level.

Distribution: Calanthe cootesii is a local endemic species, only collected at the type locality in Mount Maagnaw, Kitanglad Mountain Range, Bukidnon, Northern Mindanao, Philippines.

ABSTRACT

 A new species, Ceropegia digitiformis Kidyoo, was discovered from northeastern Thailand. It is here described and illustrated. Photographs and a diagnostic comparison with the morphologically similar related species, Ceropegia thwaitesii Hook., are also provided. These two species display clear difference in shapes and pubescence of the corona lobes.

Ceropegia digitiformis Kidyoo, sp. nov.  

Ceropegia digitiformis can be distinguished from C. thwaitesii by its outer corona of the same length as inner corona, glabrous outer coronal lobe whose apex is deeply bifid with linear-lanceolate segments, and linear-lanceolate inner corona lobes.

Etymology: The specific epithet ‘digitiformis’ refers to the finger-like structure of the outer corona, brought about by division of each outer corona lobe at the apex extending through most of its whole length into two segments. Each segment is linear-lanceolate, subterete, slightly compressed with a blunt apex (Fig.1C & 2G)

ABSTRACT

Etlingera hamiguitanensis Naive, belonging to family Zingiberaceae, is described and illustrated from the Philippines as a new species. Although similar to Etlingera philippinensis, the new species is clearly distinguished by having a shorter and heart-shaped labellum. It is also allied to E. penicillata, however, the new species clearly distinguished by having red sterile bracts.

Etlingera hamiguitanensis Naive, sp. nov.

Diagnosis: Etlingera hamiguitanensis is most similar to Etlingera philippinensis (Ridl.) R.M. Smith, but differs in the shape of the leaf (narrowly elliptic to narrowly obovate vs. broadly lanceolate), ligule (entire oblong, hyaline, reddish transluscent vs. entire triangular–oblong, papery, green) and in pubescent leaves abaxially (vs. glabrous). It also differs by having a shorter and bilobed labellum (vs. longer and entire) and by its 2–3 m tall leafy shoots (vs. 6–7 cm tall). It is also allied to Etlingera penicillata (K.Schum) A.D. Poulsen, but differs significantly in having a pubescent leaf abaxially, a much smaller leaf (30–46 × 5–9 cm vs. 67–74 × 12–14 cm), reddish, ovate to obovate sterile bracts (vs. spatulate, cream), hyaline, reddish, notched ligule (vs. entire, green ligule), inflorescence with larger, one to four flowers (vs. inflorescence with smaller, single flower) and a longer labellum (5.5–5.7 cm long vs. 3.6 to 4.2 cm long).

Distribution: La Union, San Isidro, Davao Oriental. So far, only observed and documented from southern Philippines on Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary.

Ecology: Etlingera hamiguitanensis grows as a terrestrial herb on slopes, in shady localities with closed canopy in the buffer zone of Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary at elevations of approximately 400– 600 m above sea level. The locality was known for its unique flora because of its ultramafic soil and the species was found in an area which are dominated by different fern species and is near the stream with humid environment.

Etymology: This new species was named after Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary, where the collection was made.

Abstract

Taiwan is near the northern limit of distribution of Musaceae. To understand the genetics and extent of genetic diversity in wild bananas in Taiwan, artificial hybrids between Musa itinerans var. formosana and M. balbisiana Colla, here named Musa × formobisiana H.-L. Chiu, C.-T. Shii & T.-Y.A. Yang hybrid nov., were produced. Photos and a comparison of the characteristics of Musa × formobisiana with the parent species are provided. Voucher specimens are at the Herbarium, National Museum of Natural Science, Taiwan (TNM).

 ABSTRACT

 A new hemiparasitic species, Striga crispata sp. nov., is described and illustrated from Tawu Township, Taitung County, Southern Taiwan. It most closely resembles the Australian species, S. parviflora (R. Brown) Benth, but can be differentiated by longer corollas that are pink or pinkish purple in color, corolla-lobes with crispate margins, and ornamented seed surface that is only covered by the primary ridge. A morphological description, line drawings, photographs, and conservation status are provided to aid identification.

Similar to S. parviflora in having leaf of 15–25 mm long; corolla shortly lobed, lips entire at the margin, violet, but differing from S. parviflora with leaves of 7– 15 mm long; corolla deeply lobed, lips crispate at the margin, pink or pinkish purple.

Ecology: Striga crispata sp. nov. is only known from the type locality in Taiwan, found on the edge of streams, at altitudes 20–30 m. The host plant is Heteropogon contortus (L.) P. Beauv. ex Roem. & Schult (Poaceae) (Fig. 2), and the other congeners Striga asiatica (L.) Kuntze (Orobanchaceae) are found near this new taxon. The flowering and fruiting occurs from October to November, with it withering in winter.

ABSTRACT

Primulina yandongensis, a new species from the limestone area of southwestern Guangxi, China is described and illustrated. It is similar to P. pungentisepala (W. T. Wang) Mich. Möller & A. Weber in morphology, but it is easily distinguished from the latter by some of the distinct characters in cyme, corolla, filament, staminode and phenology. The detailed information, including morphological descriptions, illustrations and diagnostic comparisons etc. are provided.

Primulina yandongensis Ying Qin & Yan Liu, sp. nov.

 Type: CHINA. Guangxi, Baise City, Debao County, Yandong Town,

elev. 559 m, ..., 26 September 2017,
Debao expedition team of Chinese traditional medicine, 451024170926007LY
(holotype: IBK!, isotypes: IBK!).

The new species similar to Primulina pungentisepala (W. T. Wang) Mich. Möller & A. Weber in morphology, but it differs from the latter by its inflorescence 11–28- flowered, yellow corolla, thinner tube, filaments sparsely glandular-puberulent, 3 staminodes pubescent and sparsely glandular-puberulent.

Distinguishing characters: Primulina yandongensis is morphologically close to P. pungentisepala. Shared characters mainly include leaf with similar shape and veins, peduncle with similar length and indumentum, bracts with similar shape and indumentum. However, P. yandongensis can be easily distinguished from the latter by its inflorescence 11–28-flowered, yellow corolla, tube 1.4–1.8 cm long, 5–8 mm in diameter at the mouth.

Etymology: The epithet is derived from the type locality Yandong Town, Daobao County, Baise City, Southwestern Guangxi, China. 

Distribution, habitat and ecology: Primulina yandongensis was known only from the limestone areas of Yandong Town, Debao County, Baise City, Southwestern Guangxi, China. This new species were found from the cliffs of karst tiankengs, or from the entrance of karst caves, and companied by Hymenodictyon flaccidum Wallich, Miliusa sinensis Finet & Gagnepain, Strophioblachia fimbricalyx Boerlage, Trigonostemon thyrsoideus Stapf, Excoecaria cochinchinensis var. viridis (Pax & K. Hoffmann) Merrill, Alchornea trewioides (Bentham) Müller Argoviensis, Rinorea bengalensis (Wallich) Kuntze, Cipadessa baccifera (Roth) Miquel, Maesa perlarius (Loureiro) Merrill, Tinomiscium petiolare Miers ex J. D. Hooker & Thomson, Paphiopedilum hirsutissimum (Lindley ex Hooker) Stein, Begonia chingii Irmscher, Begonia edulis H. Léveillé, etc. ...

Abstract

A new species, Gastrochilus deltoglossus, is described and illustrated from Taiwan. This species is characterized by the presence of pendulous stems, leaves without awned apex, 3.5–4.0 mm tall subconical hypochile, and broadly deltoid, ciliate, adaxially sparsely short-hairy epichile that are approximately as wide as hypochile. Notes on its distribution, ecology, conservation status and taxonomic affinities are presented.

Gastrochilus deltoglossus T.C. Hsu, S.I Hsieh, J.H. Wu & H.C. Hung, sp. nov.

Type: TAIWAN. Nantou County: Ren'ai Township, 2000–2500 m elev., 8 Jun 2018, J. H. Wu 525 (holotype: TCF!; isotypes: TAIF!, TNM!). 

Diagnosis: This new species is similar to Gastrochilus raraensis, from which it differs in having a wider (3.0–3.5 vs. ca. 2.0 mm) saccate lip hypochile and a smaller, deltoid (vs. semiorbicular to reniform), adaxially sparsely short-hairy (vs. densely long hairy) lip epichile. It is also similar to G. ciliaris but can be differentiated on the basis of its pendulous (vs. creeping) stems, larger (3.5–4.0 vs. 2.0–3.0 mm long) tepals, much larger (3.5–4.0 mm tall and 3.0–3.5 in diam. vs. 1.5–2.0 mm tall and ca. 2.0 mm in diam.) subconical (vs. semispherical) lip hypochile with acute (vs. rounded) bottom, and obtuse (vs. rounded or emarginate) epichile.

 Chinese name: 三角唇松蘭. 

Etymology: The specific epithet is a combination of “delta”, triangular, and “glossus”, tongue, derived from the characteristic deltoid lip epichile of the new species.
