Abstract

Primula zhui a new species of Primula endemic to the Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to P. intanoensis from Thailand, and P. calyptrata from southeast Yunnan, affiliated to Primula sect. Carolinella (Hemsl.) Pax. However, it is easily distinguished from the Thailand species by its longer corolla tube and distylous flowers, and it differs from the Chinese species by its leaf ovate to ovate-elliptic blade and distylous flowers.

Primula zhui is similar to P. intanoensis T. Yamaz. from Thailand and P. calyptrata X. Gong & R.C. Fang from China. But it is easily distinguished from P. intanoensis by its longer corolla tube (1.4–1.6 cm long, 2.0–2.5 times as long as the calyx) and distylous flowers, and from P. calyptrata by its ovate to ovate-elliptic leaf blade and distylous flowers. 

They named the new species as Primula zhui to honor Prof. ZHU Hua of XTBG, who worked on plant taxonomy and biogeog­raphy and made great contributions to the tropical flora in China, especially in south Yunnan.  

Primula zhui is endemic to south Yunnan, southwest China, only known from its type locality, Yixiang, Simao, Pu’er. It grows in the understory of subtropical evergreen broadleaf forests, at 1300–1500 m above sea level. 

Primula zhui is assessed as 'Critically Endangered' according to the IUCN standard. During the preliminary field survey in Simao County, the researchers found only three populations and less than 50 individuals in the type locality of about four sq.km. area in Yixiang.

Abstract

Gastrodia putaoensis, a new species from the montane region in northern Myanmar, is described and illustrated. Gastrodia putaoensis is similar to G. dyeriana, but differs from it by having a narrowly triangular lip that is subdivided into two parts, with the apical part densely covered with yellow hairs and the apex obtuse and densely covered with red papillae.

Gastrodia putaoensis X.H. Jin sp. nov.

A species similar to G. dyeriana, but differing by having greyish white flowers with the lip narrowly triangular and subdivided into two parts with the apical part near tip densely covered with yellow hairs, and the lip apex obtuse and densely covered with red papillae.

Type: Myanmar, Kachin State, Putao District, Hkakaborazi National Park, under the montane evergreen broadleaf forests, 2200 m a.s.l.,   Xiaohua Jin et al., PT-2275 (holotype: PE!; isotypes: PE!, IBSC!).

Etymology: The epithet of the new species is derived from the name of Putao District, northern Myanmar, where the type was collected.

Ecology and distribution: Gastrodia putaoensis grows under montane broadleaf evergreen forest at 2000–2200 m a.s.l. During our fieldwork in Hkakaborazi in 2016, two populations with approximately 2000 plants were discovered. Both populations are far from any direct threats. Hence, this new species should be considered as ‘Least Concern’ (LC) according to IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria (IUCN 20012001).

Abstract

Sorbus cibagouensis sp. nov. (Rosaceae subfam. Rosaceae), a new taxon from Cibagou National Nature Reserve, Zayü County, southeastern Xizang (Tibet), China, is described and illustrated. It is related to S. monbeigii (Cardot) Balakr., but primarily differs in the number of styles (S. cibagouensis = 5; S. monbeigii = 4) and the shape of stipules and leaves (S. cibagouensis: stipules caducous, small, with entire margin, leaflets in 9–11 pairs; S. monbeigii: stipules persistent, large, serrate, leaflets in 6–8 (–10) pairs).

Abstract

 A new ginger species, Curcuma cotuana (subg. Ecomatae), from Tây Giang District, Quảng Nam Province, central Vietnam, is reported here. A detailed description, colour plates, and comparison with the morphologically closest allies are given, together with preliminary conservation assessments and notes on its uses by local people.

Curcuma cotuana Luu, Škorničk. & H.Đ.Trần sp. nov. 

Etymology: We name this species after the local Cơ Tu ethnic minority, who use various parts of the plant in their traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Vernacular name and uses: The vernacular name of this species, Pơr’vih in the Cơ Tu language, conveys an idea of keeping the living environment of people in the village peaceful and protected against bad spirits. The main rhizome is stewed with chicken and eaten by women after birth, giving them strength to work soon afterwards. It also reduces menstrual cramp in women. Raw root tubers are mixed with honey to treat coughs in children. Young leaves are mixed with rock salt to treat toothache and gingivitis. Fresh leaves are also used for wrapping fresh fish to preserve it from spoilage. The local people also believe that the plant possesses magic qualities preventing people from getting lost in the forest.

Abstract

Polyalthia yingjiangensis sp. nov. is described from the China/Myanmar border. It is distinct in having outer petals that are much shorter than the inner petals and having a very long pedicel. It is most similar to P. miliusoides I.M. Turner, but differs in having perianth parts that are glabrous adaxially and pubescent abaxially, thicker and sparsely pubescent pedicels, as well as verrucose and darker monocarps.

Etymology:  The specific epithet is chosen in honour of Dr Mark Fleming Newman, a ginger specialist at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Scotland, UK (E), for his remarkable contributions to the study of Indochinese gingers.

Abstract

Rungia sinothailandica (Acanthaceae), a new species from Yunnan, China and Chiang Rai, Thailand is described and illustrated. A colour plate, line drawing and distribution map of R. sinothailandica are provided. Rungia sinothailandica is similar to R. pinpienensis H. S. Lo, but differs in the broadly ovate sterile bracts and obovate-elliptic fertile bracts, the crispate and tawny bracts margin, the 2-lobed upper lip of the corolla and puberulent capsule. It is also similar to R. burmanica (C. B. Clarke) B. Hansen, but is easily distinguished by pubescent stems and leaves, the cymbiform-oblong bracteoles and the 2-lobed upper lip of corolla.

Etymology: The specific epithet sinothailandica , that is derived from ‘sino’ meaning ‘Chinese’ and ‘thailandica’ meaning ‘Thai’ , refers to that the new species was found in China and Thailand.

Abstract

Petrocodon retroflexus Q. Zhang & J. Guo, a new species of Gesneriaceae from Guizhou, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to Petrocodon viridescens W. H. Chen, Mich. Möller & Y. M. Shui, but differs by its leaf blade being ovate, broadly ovate to elliptic, 8–20 × 5–15 cm and densely pilose on both surfaces, narrowly triangular, 9 mm long, densely pilose bracts, white corolla that is decurved near the middle, with adaxial lip shallowly 4-partitioned and retroflexed, and pistil ca 1.3 cm long and densely pilose and glandular-pilose.

Etymology: This new species is named after its retroflexed adaxial lip.
