Seven Side Diamond - Enigma (2011) ---ScRaBBlE

Ya desde el arte de portada, con elementos surrealista, evoca una sensación onírica y lisérgica de un álbum que hace justicia a su nombre, ya que es necesario descifrar la sonoridad de la propuesta de esta banda brasilera que sacó este disco, cantado en inglés, en el 2011. Una muestra de la técnica, virtuosismo y sentimiento presentado en todo disco, un disco independiente pero con mucho esmero en la producción, donde todos los instrumentos suenen de la forma más clara posible, lo que contribuye a que cada miembro pueda brillar, sobretodo en el tema homónimo que tiene treinta y cuatro minutos de duración, divididos en trece actos. Un disco con muchas influencias, pero que no pierde nunca el sentimiento. Les recomiendo que le peguen una escuchada, otra joyita latinoamericana escondida que traemos (nuevamente) al blog cabezón.

Los brasileros Seven Side Diamond tienen una estética similar a los argentinos Fughu, con esas galeras y vestimenta medio gótica, siendo su propuesta musical también bastante parecida, con su estilo operístico y bastante power, y con líricas en inglés. Pero vamos a detallar un poco más...

3er álbum oficial de estudio de SEVEN SIDE DIAMOND, grupo brasileño conformado por João FADEL (guitarra), André FADEL (piano, teclados), Casimiro ARAÚJO (batería), Diego PORRES (bajo) y Diego AMERICO (canto).
De sus discos anteriores (Seven Side Diamond y Transition) a éste, la cosa mejoró notablemente para SEVEN SIDE DIAMOND. Mejoró la idea musical, mejoró la calidad de la ejecución instrumental, mejoró el canto, mejoró el arte de portada, en fin, mejoró su oferta. Y mejoró tanto, que la banda es bien querida en varios lares del planeta, destacando a Japón que distribuyen su buen gusto por el progresivo occidental con el de América Latina y cosas tan elementales como ésta. No sé si sea que ante tanta falta de originalidad lo feo comande lo horroroso, pero "Enigma" consiguió colarse en listas importantes de discos bien hechos, impulsando al grupo hacia mercados más selectos. Ya veremos (talvez) si el siguiente da otro brinco o se estanca un rato…

Alfredo Tapia-Carreto

Banda oriunbda de Curitiba, Brasil. Es lo primero que escucho de ellos y la verdad es que el disco me encantó. A pesar de estar cantado en inglés, tiene una fuerte personalidad (en general, no siempre pero la mayor partes de las veces que una banda de estos pagos canta en inglés tiene una falta de personalidad que aterra, aunque los músicos sean muy buenos, por lo que se desperdicia un posible buen trabajo). Este no es el caso.

El trabajo impresiona por su creatividad. El disco tiene muchos puntos altos, y voy a hablar un poco sobre lo que más me llamó la atención. Dejo de lado los aspectos de producción, ya que siendo un trabajo independiente, la soniridad del disco me parece inmejorable y la producción en general es excelente. Si te gusta prestar atención a cada detalle técnico, te vas a dar cuenta del cuidado y atención con que la banda trabaja con cada sección. El disco es aún mejor cuando vemos una producción realizada con tanto cuidado.

Natural do Paraná e na ativa desde o final da década de 1990, o Seven Side Diamond já tem na bagagem os álbuns "Seven Side Diamond" (02) e "Transition" (04), além de também liberar o ao vivo "Far Beyond Live" (06) no formato CD e DVD. Ou seja, o pessoal é produtivo e mantem sua carreira devidamente movimentada, o que continua com "Enigma", um lançamento que novamente trará alegria aos amantes do Progressivo.

Voy a tomar la libertad de dividir el disco en dos partes: las primeras 5 canciones y la suite de Enigma.
En mi opinión, la primer canción resume la idea de la banda en este álbum. Lleno de experimentación, armonías bien estructuradas y una composición muy inteligente. Una cosa que me llamó mucho la atención y en la primera escucha fue lo primero que me gustó: las lineas del bajo, que son geniales!!!! el juego del bajo que se alterna entre diferentes técnicas y sigue sonando de forma uniforme.
Si bien todas las canciones son buenas y en un nivel muy uniforme, creo que "Shine" y "Metasong" se destacan principalmente en la primera mitad del disco.

Hablando de la suite "Enigma", creo que esta canción se merece un examen entero sólo para ella. La suite tiene más de media hora de duración y se divide en 13 unidades. La musicalidad del rompecabezas es probablemente una de las canciones más frescas y emocionantes que he escuchado de un tiempo a esta parte.
La canción recorre múltiples estados de ánimo y sentimientos encontrados, siendo un único, emocionante y rico viaje, una experiencia musical fascinante. Los timbragens elegido para este disco no podría ser mejor, y cumplir con su función bien , que es qué nos sumergimos en el ambiente de las canciones al igual que un submarino de oro.
La forma en que este tema fue escrito y concebido es diferente que a los demás temas del resto del disco. Además de un tono más enigmático (como su nombre lo indica), la parte lírica es también una característica de la inmersión en el dramatismo del trabajo.
En definitiva, una suite genial y que de por sola justifica a todo el disco.

Vamos con algunos reviews ajenos, aunque no encontré ninguno en castellano:

Fast paced, very wild album that sounds like a very special trip of a bit drunken Progster that is trying to incorporate as many melodies as possible. I'm aware that being drunk is usually associated with negative connotations, but in this case, our drunkard of an album have a very clear mind, with which he is positioning layers of this big structure that we, for a lack of better words, call Prog.
Lovely, thoroughly intricate, vigorously shining (maybe because they hail from Brazil, remember Bigorna) and I somehow can't help but get a feeling of a new Echolyn album from this Enigma. Which is not exactly an enigma, because it's album everyone can enjoy, there's nothing inaccessible, mysteriously hidden in difficult listening there.
One thing of importance, this music is heavily dominated by piano sounds, together with "lushness" of other instruments. Maybe that's not a proper term, but in this case, why not, its sound is really full, with heavy bass growling (this word fits perfectly into what the bass here is doing), occasional keyboards (they aren't as dominant as in most of other Prog acts and are because of that they appears muffled a bit) and of course, vocal work that is far from being flat and unemotional, with what sounds to me like a well sung English (not much accent, but then again, I'm not a native speaker). There are parts where acoustic guitar plays gentle intros/outros - rare, but nice. In this complex. Drums are sometimes lost in the lushness though, but they are there.
60 minutes, fine line between too short and too long of an album, because there is something like a theme, leitmotif that is used (with variations) on a few spots. Also, because of previously mentioned facts and opinions, Enigma is a very consistent album.
ProgArchives, in contrast to many other internet communities, is a very special place. With its age distribution, it has much higher average (35?) than for example gaming forums, where 20 or so would be my guess. I'm one of those younger generations, who have a disadvantage not to live in 70s (and see/hear/live it through myself). However, as I am thoroughly listening Prog for last 4 years, trying to make up for it and compensate somehow. The point of this paragraph, except the fact that it can serve as a quick study, is that I have heard quite a few hundreds of artists, with many thousands albums. The more I listen, the more sparsely I use 5 star rating. Yet here, without hesitation or a slightest doubt, I use it.

The one idea bandied about this site that bugs me the most is that prog rock that uses forms developed by the bands of the last half century (damn that makes me feel old) are not being "progressive". I disagree. And this beautiful album proves my point.
Seven Side Diamond masterfully takes influences from the classic seventies up through modern prog metal, and blends them into something quite familiar, while remaining fresh and original. This is not a clone band, although many of the references to the past are quite plain. The song Shine has more than a few lyrical nods to Yes (and at least one musical one), but the song is anything but a Yes imitation.
The focal point of the album is the thirteen part Enigma, that takes the listener on a long voyage through many progscapes. To my ears, this is the finest work of prog to come out this year.
The instrumentalists are all exceptional, and singer Diego Americo has a voice that fits perfectly in the gruff metal passages, and even sounds amazing when singing in Freddie Mercury-like ranges.
I must say that this band should be a force in prog's future.

A little heavier than I like, but this is definitely an album of stellar performances and creativity! "Shine" (9/10) is my favorite, though the "Enigma" suite (8/10) is great, too. Nice to see that Latin America is coming to prog life! The future of prog looks very good if bands like this one, Haken, Camembert, Aisles, Airbag, Sean Filkins, Sanhedrin, Ciccada, Frequency Drift, My Brother the Wind, Karfargen, Sunchild, Unexpect, Fen, Autumn Chorus, etc., etc., ETC. keep popping up (out of nowhere!) What a year was 2011! Can '012 (or any year) top it?! It's tough to imagine! 4 stars--excellent addition to anyone's prog collection.

Cerrando el tema; "Enigma" es un CD que tiene todo para ser celebrado por los fans del progresivo de cualquier parte del mundo, siendo una de las mejores obras de rock progresivo realizadas en el suelo brasilero de hoy en día. Seven Side Diamond sobrepasa cualquier expectativa en este trabajo, así que si te gusta la música dramática, con buenas armonías, líneas creativas, fantásticos solos y pasajes que se te pegan en la cabeza, llevate este disco que recomiendo fervientemente, siendo un rompecabezas que resulta una experiencia disfrutable de principio a fin.
Repito: muy muy recomendado, no se pierdan esta belleza brazuca.
