Abstract

The Albertine Rift (AR) is a centre for vertebrate endemism in Central Africa, yet the mechanisms underlying lineage diversification of the region’s fauna remain unresolved. We generated a multilocus molecular phylogeny consisting of two mitochondrial (16S and ND2) and one nuclear (RAG1) gene to reconstruct relationships and examine spatiotemporal diversification patterns in the AR endemic forest chameleon, Kinyongia adolfifriderici (Sternfeld, 1912). This widely distributed species was revealed to be a complex of four genetically distinct and geographically isolated species. Three new species are described based on molecular analyses and morphological examinations. We find that Kinyongia rugegensis sp. nov. (Rugege Highlands) and Kinyongia tolleyae sp. nov. (Kigezi Highlands) form a well-supported clade, which is sister to K. gyrolepis (Lendu Plateau). Kinyongia itombwensis sp. nov. (Itombwe Plateau) was recovered as sister to K. adolfifriderici (Ituri Rainforest). The phylogeographic patterns we recovered for Kinyongia suggest that speciation stemmed from isolation in forest refugia. Our estimated diversification dates in the Miocene indicate that most species of Kinyongia diverged prior to the aridification of Africa following climate fluctuations during the Pleistocene. Our results highlight the AR as a focal point of diversification for Kinyongia, further elevating the global conservation importance of this region.

Abstract

Aframomum ngamikkense, a new species from the Misotshi-Kabogo Massif in the Albertine Rift, Eastern D.R. Congo, is described and illustrated. It differs from the superficially similar A. pseudostipulare in the shorter and obtuse ligules up to 5 mm long (vs. acute and up to 10 mm long), and the indistinctly 3-lobed apex of the stamen (vs. distinctly 3-lobed).

Scientists from WCS have discovered a new species of wild ginger, spicing up a wave of recent wildlife discoveries in the Kabobo Massif -- a rugged, mountainous region in Democratic Republic of Congo. 

Aframomum ngamikkense Eb.Fisch., Kirunda, Ewango, M.E.Leal & Plumptre, spec. nov. (Fig. 1, 2) 

Differt ab Afromomo pseudostipulare ligulis brevioribus obtusisque usque ad 5 mm longis (ligulae acutae et usque ad 10 mm longae in A. pseudostipulare) et apice staminae indistincte trilobata (apex distincte trilobata in A. pseudostipulare).

 The new species differs from Aframomum pseudostipulare in the shorter and obtuse ligules up to 5 mm long (acute and up to 10 mm long in A. pseudostipulare) and the indistinctly 3-lobed apex of the stamen (distinctly 3-lobed in A. pseudostipulare). 

Type:— D.R.CONGO. Katanga Province, Kizamba area on the trail to to top of Kankamana Hill, 1570 m, .... (holotype NHN!; isotypes BR!, MHU!, LWI!). 

Etymology:— The new species is named after the proposed Ngamikka National Park in the Misotshi-Kabogo Massif. This includes the mountains Nganja, Misotshi, Kabogo and Kabili (Plumptre et al. 2010).

Abstract

African snake-eaters of the genus Polemon are cryptic, fossorial snakes that mainly inhabit the forests of central, eastern, and western Africa. Molecular results from a previous study demonstrated that Polemon christyi is not monophyletic—two distinct lineages were recovered from Uganda (the type locality) and southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Genetic data indicated differences in sequence divergence and encoded amino acids between these lineages. Based on these molecular differences and diagnostic differences in morphology, we describe the lineage from southeastern DRC as a new species. Literature records indicate that it likely occurs in adjacent Tanzania and Zambia. It is the first species of Polemon to be described in over 70 years.

Abstract

A new species, Kniphofia vandeweghei, is described and illustrated, and the differences with K. princeae, K. goetzei and K. paludosa are discussed. Distribution maps for K. vandeweghei and K. princeae are provided. Kniphofia bequaertii, sometimes regarded as a synonym of K. grantii, is considered to be a good species, and identification characters and distribution information are given. An identification key for all known Kniphofia species from Rwanda is provided.

 Abstract

 Species of the genus Punctum Morse, 1864 are reported for the first time from western Africa and the Congo Basin: P. camerunense nov. spec. from Cameroon (Mount Cameroon), P. nimbaense nov. spec. from Liberia (Mount Nimba), and an unidentified, possibly undescribed, species from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Banalia, Tshopo Province). Representatives of the genus Punctum in sub-Saharan Africa were hitherto known from the eastern parts of the continent only. The newly described western African Punctum species were all collected above 1200 m altitude. It is suggested that altitude might be a factor explaining the apparent rarity of Punctum in West Africa: areas elevated above 1000 m are rather restricted in western Africa, whilst they are widespread in eastern Africa. However, the finding of a single shell below an altitude of 450 m in the Congo Basin seems to contradict this elevation hypothesis. Shells of P. pallidum reported by van Bruggen from Malawi and Zambia are illustrated for the first time. Apart from P. adami, P. pallidum, and the western African species reported in this paper, the Afrotropical Punctum species hitherto described appear to have substantially larger shells than the western African taxa and may be better assigned to a different genus, perhaps Paralaoma.
