Viacom’s Domestic and International Media Networks to Launch on fuboTV Streaming Service

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB, VIA) and fuboTV today announced a carriage agreement that will extend Viacom’s global portfolio of premier entertainment brands to fuboTV’s live TV streaming service.

Viacom’s nine core media networks – BET, CMT, COMEDY CENTRAL, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Paramount Network, TV Land and VH1 – will soon be included in fuboTV’s base package, “fubo.” An expanded suite of Viacom channels will also be available in the premier package, “fubo Extra,” including BET Her, BET Jams, BET Soul, Logo, MTV2, MTV Classic, MTV Live, mtvU, Nick Music, Nicktoons, and TeenNick.

This partnership also enhances fuboTV’s Spanish-language base package, “fubo Latino,” with Viacom’s Telefe and MTV Tr3s networks.

VIACOM EXPANDS PRESENCE IN THE LIVE STREAMING SPACE WITH CHARTER AND FUBOTV PARTNERSHIPS

Two new deals represent Viacom’s latest strategic moves to put its content on next-generation platforms.

Viacom content will be newly available to millions of potential viewers on two streaming platforms, according to a pair of separate partnerships with Charter Communications and fuboTV announced earlier today. Together, these deals illustrate Viacom’s continued, strategic focus on making its content available on next-generation platforms to meet the needs of today’s—and tomorrow’s—consumers, as well as position itself as a key partner to an expanding network of industry leaders and innovators.

As announced this afternoon, Viacom will be one of Charter’s programming partners for “Spectrum TV Essentials,” a new streaming service set to launch by the end of March. As well, in a separate deal announced earlier today with fuboTV, content from across Viacom’s portfolio will be available across the fuboTV’s suite of packages.

The Deals in Brief

The big idea: Viacom is moving beyond its linear network legacy to increase the availability of its programming—including hits like Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and MTV’s Jersey Shore: Family Vacation—for live and on-demand streaming platforms. This means its content is available for those who choose to pay for a subscription service in addition to, or as an alternative to, a traditional cable subscription.

Industry context: The move signals that Viacom’s a valuable partner in the fragmented video distribution landscape—dubbed “OTT Overload” by AdWeek . The ecosystem is slated to become even more competitive in the next year with the debut of The Walt Disney Company’s Disney+ platform, AT&T’s yet-to-be-named direct-to-consumer platform, and an ever-increasing number of a la carte OTT offerings from cable companies and wireless providers.

Good to know: Viacom’s also invested in a streaming model that’s supported by advertising rather than subscription fees (in other words, free for consumers). Viacom agreed to acquire the ad-supported streaming service Pluto TV earlier this month. The deal, which is expected to close at the end of March, will put its programming in front of more than 12 million subscribers and position it as a leading content provider in the free-streaming ecosystem.

On-the-record: “I think one of the things we've done as a company in the last couple of years is to make acquisitions that are really, really transformative of our business,” said Shari Redstone, the non-executive vice chair of Viacom’s board of directors, recently in a conversation with Bob Bakish during a Viacom town hall event.

A Launch Partner for Charter’s Spectrum TV Essentials

Priced at $14.99 plus tax per month, the over-the-top (OTT) Spectrum TV Essentials video service will offer more than 60 live lifestyle, entertainment, and news channels to the Spectrum internet customers who don’t subscribe to the cabler’s video services.

Expanding fuboTV’s Content Offerings

The fuboTV partnership will make content from Viacom’s core networks (which include MTV, Comedy Central, BET, and VH1) available to stream on fuboTV’s base package, while an expanded portfolio of channels (which include BET Her, MTV2 and Logo) will be available across fuboTV’s premiere packages. Plus, Viacom’s Telefe and MTV Tr3 networks will expand fuboTV’s Spanish-language base package, “fubo Latino.”

Viacom plans to use their infrastructure to expand Pluto TV’s footprint in the United States and around the world. The company also hopes to expand on the platform's 100 live linear channels with their deep library genre-specific content - kids (Nickelodeon), African-American (BET), reality (MTV & VH1), and comedy (Comedy Central).

Viacom also sees Pluto TV as a marketing engine to sell their own OTT services -- Noggin, Comedy Central Now, and Nick Hits. But don't expect first-run content to appear on Pluto TV, as Viacom says they will keep that content for their own linear channels.

Pluto TV has more than 12 million monthly active users, 7.5 million of which are on connected TVs. The service can stream across a wide array of devices including Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, PS4, iOS, Android, and your computer.

Last week another similar service, XUMO was rumored to be in acquisition talks with broadcasters including Sinclair Media Group. Last month, Sinclair launched their own ad-supported streaming service, STIRR.

Additionally, Tubi announced that following a $25m growth capital round, they had signed a streaming deal with NBCUniversal for 400 classic TV shows & films.

For some time now Viacom has hinted at plans for a free streaming service now it seems that buying Pluto TV is how they will do it.

A few weeks ago when this deal was first announced the CEO of Pluto TV said: “Since our launch less than five years ago, and particularly over the past year, Pluto TV has enjoyed explosive growth and become the category leader in free streaming television,” said Pluto TV CEO and Co-Founder Tom Ryan. “Viacom’s portfolio of global, iconic brands and IP, advanced advertising leadership and international reach will enable Pluto TV to grow even faster and become a major force in streaming TV worldwide. Viacom has been clear they that they plan to keep Pluto TV free. Viacom’s CEO Bob Bakish went on CNBC and pushed the idea of how Pluto TV as a free service is important to Viacom. “We love how (Pluto TV) fits in with over 12 million active users,” Bakish said. “We have a ton of (ads) to sell and that is where Pluto TV comes in.”

For now, I wouldn’t look for anything to change in the short term. Hopefully, this means more Viacom content will be coming to Pluto TV soon.

Meanwhile Viacom brings to Pluto TV their portfolio of powerhouse networks MTV, MTV2, MTV, Live, MTV Classic, MTVU, VH1, Logo TV, Comedy Central, Spike, Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite, Nick Jr, TeenNick, Nicktoons, NickMusic, TV Land CMT, CMT Music, and oh yes how about all the content from Paramount.

Viacom Names Mikko Silvennoinen as it's New Commercial Director for VIMN Nordics ---ScRaBBlE

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN), the international division of US firm Viacom, has appointed media and television specialist Mikko Silvennoinen as the new Commercial Director of Viacom International Media Networks Nordics. In his newly appointed role, Silvennoinen will be responsible for the revenue streams of Viacom in the Nordic countries, including advertising sales, content and channel distribution solutions, and identifying new business opportunities for Viacom and portfolio of world class brands, such as Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., MTV, Paramount, Comedy Central and VH1.

Silvennoinen is a media expert and was one of the founders of the legendary music programme Jyrki. He is also known as a producer of YouTubers’ event Tubecon, Finland’s commentator at Eurovision Song Contest, and as a producer of several domestic television programs. During his career, Silvennoinen has worked for MTG Group, as Fox Finland's Program Director, and as Sanoma Media Finland's Children's Media Content and Marketing Director. In recent years, Silvennoinen has worked as a consultant through his own company, oversaw the launch of Viafree, a standalone Finnish AVOD, and worked on content marketing projects for media agency Dagmar (Starcom).

"Viacom is at the forefront of exploring new ways to share content. The company's portfolio includes the world's strongest brands, reaching out to a wide audience, ranging from children to adults. Jumping excitedly and looking forward to creating new partnership models, various online and offline activities, and distribution solutions for Viacom's content," Silvennoinen said in a statement.

In his role as the commercial director for Viacom in the Nordic countries, Silvennoinen will act as the head of the sales team, currently staffed by six people. He will report to Jesper Dahl, General Manager (GM) for Viacom in the Nordics.

"We are very happy to have Miko on the Viacom team. He has extensive experience in various types of media, diverse target groups and new platforms where brands and consumers meet. We believe that Mikko joining will be a great support for both Viacom and our partnerships and further strengthens our brand and product range in the Nordic countries,” says Dahl.

Silvennoinen started work in his new role on Monday 4th March 2019. He will work in both Finland and Sweden.

Silvennoinen on media-alan konkari ja hän kuului legendaarisen Jyrki-ohjelman perustajiin.
