[Ichthyology • 2017] Tarumania walkerae • Tarumaniidae fam. nov., A New Family of Neotropical Freshwater Fishes from Deep Fossorial Amazonian Habitat, with A Reappraisal of Morphological Characiform Phylogeny (Teleostei: Ostariophysi) ---ScRaBBlE

Tarumania walkerae
de Pinna, Zuanon, Py-Daniel & Petry, 2017

Abstract
We present the taxonomic description of Tarumaniidaea new family of South American freshwater fishes including a new genus (Tarumania) and species (Tarumania walkerae) from the Central Amazon. The new taxon displays an extraordinary set of unique characteristics, which sets it apart from all other known bony fishes, either in South America or elsewhere. Tarumaniidae has reverse-imbricated scales on the head, 244 or more scales along the midlateral lateral series, an 11-chambered swimbladder extending along most of the body, an anteriorly deflectable pelvic fin and a platybasic skull, among other unusual traits. Although the general habitus of Tarumania gives little hint of its phylogenetic placement, examination of internal anatomy is largely elucidative concerning the main features of its relationships. For example, Tarumania has a complete Weberian apparatus, comprising a set of characteristics supporting its position in Otophysi and Ostariophysi. Additional comparative evidence corroborates its placement in the order Characiformes, including some trademark characiform synapomorphies such as the presence of a hypertrophied lagenar capsule. We conducted a phylogenetic analysis on the basis of previously published morphological evidence for Characiformes, with the inclusion of Tarumania and additional relevant taxa and characters. Results support the position of Tarumania as a part of the superfamily Erythrinoidea and sister group to the neotropical Erythrinidae. Our increased taxonomic representation of Erythrinidae in the matrices firmly corroborates Tarumania as sister group to the whole of Erythrinidae and not to a subgroup of that family. Tarumania walkerae is a predator, which inhabits vast leaf-litter deposits in the Rio Negro drainage, and is found deeply buried in isolated pools during the dry season. It is the first characiform with an anguilliform body shape and fossorial habits. The unprecedented combination of phenotypic traits, behaviour and habitat adds substantially to the larger picture of freshwater fish diversity. Although its microhabitat is difficult to sample, the geographical range of T. walkerae includes areas close to major urban centres and which have been ichthyologically surveyed for many years. The fact that a relatively large and highly distinctive fish such as Tarumania remained undiscovered until now is testimony to the still-incomplete state of knowledge of biodiversity in Amazonian waters.

[Ichthyology • 2017] Tometes siderocarajensis • A New Species of Tometes Valenciennes 1850 (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae) from Tocantins-Araguaia River Basin Based on Integrative Analysis of Molecular and Morphological Data ---ScRaBBlE

Tometes siderocarajensis
Andrade, Machado, Jégu, Farias & Giarrizzo, 2017

Abstract

A new large serrasalmid species of Tometes is described from the Tocantins-Araguaia River Basin. Tometes siderocarajensis sp. nov. is currently found in the rapids of the Itacaiúnas River Basin, and formerly inhabited the lower Tocantins River. The new species can be distinguished from all congeners, except from T. ancylorhynchus, by the presence of lateral space between 1st and 2nd premaxillary teeth, and by the absence of lateral cusps in these two teeth. However, T. siderocarajensis sp. nov. can be differentiated from syntopic congener T. ancylorhynchus by an entirely black with mottled red body in live specimens, densely pigmented pelvic fins with a high concentration of dark chromatophores, and the presence of 39 to 41 rows of circumpeduncular scales (vs. silvery body coloration with slightly reddish overtones on middle flank during breeding period in live specimens, hyaline to slightly pale coloration on distalmost region of pelvic fins, and 30 to 36 rows of circumpeduncular scales). Additionally, molecular sequence shows that T. siderocarajensis sp. nov. is reciprocally monophyletic, and diagnosable from all congeners by having two autapomorphic molecular characters in the mitochondrial gene COI. The phylogenetic reconstruction still show that T. siderocarajensis sp. nov. is closely related to T. trilobatus. This is the first molecular study using an integrative taxonomic approach based on morphological and molecular sequence data for all described species of Tometes. These findings increase the number of formally described species of Tometes to seven. A key to the Tometes species is provided.

 (b) ZUEC 12598, female, 328.0 mm SL. Preserved specimens.

Diagnosis: Tometes siderocarajensis sp. nov. is distinguished from all congeners by dense pigmentation on the distalmost portion of the pelvic-fin rays or the entirety of the fin (Fig 2A, Fig 2B) [vs. pelvic fin hyaline or pale, or with few scattered dark chromatophores along distal portion of rays (Fig 2C, Fig 2E)]. Additionally, it is distinguished from all, except from T. camunani and T. kranponhah, by having more circumpeduncular scale rows (39‒41 vs. 38 or less), and from T. kranponhah and T. trilobatus by having 1st and 2nd labial premaxillary teeth laterally spaced (Fig 3A) (vs. 1st and 2nd labial premaxillary teeth with lateral contact). The new species is further distinguished from T. trilobatus by having more perforated lateral line scales (74–84 vs. 58–72) and from T. makue by having more spines on ventral keel (11–17 prepelvic spines and 26–33 total spines vs. 0–9 and 10–23, respectively). Finally, Tometes siderocarajensis sp. nov. can be distinguished from T. lebaili by having a terminal to gently upturned mouth and invariably 5 dentary teeth (vs. a markedly upturned mouth and 6–7 dentary teeth).

Fig 7. Itacaiúnas River, Pará State, at Mosaic of Conservation Units of Serra dos Carajás, type locality of Tometes siderocarajensis

Etymology: The epithet siderocarajensis alludes to the locality ‘Serra and Carajás’, which is the largest high-grade iron deposit in the world. From the Greek‒Latin sidero means ‘iron’, and carajensis in allusion to the type locality. A toponymic adjective.

Geographic distribution: Tometes siderocarajensis is known to occur in the rapids of the Itacaiúnas River (Fig 7) and in its right-bank tributary, the Cateté River (average elevation of localities around 220 m a.s.l.), both located in the Mosaic of Conservation Units of Serra dos Carajás, Tocantins-Araguaia River Basin, State of Pará (Fig 8). In addition, T. siderocarajensis had its record confirmed in the Tocantins River based on specimens collected before the construction of the Tucuruí Hydroelectric Reservoir (INPA 52481), an area formerly known to contain many rapids but is currently flooded by the dam.

[Ichthyology • 2017] Hyphessobrycon klausanni • A New Species of Hyphessobrycon (Characiformes, Characidae) from the upper Guaviare River, Orinoco River Basin, Colombia ---ScRaBBlE

Hyphessobrycon klausanni
García-Alzate, Urbano-Bonilla & Taphorn, 2017

Abstract
Hyphessobrycon klausanni sp. n. is described from small drainages of the upper Guaviare River (Orinoco River Basin) in Colombia. It differs from all congeners by having a wide, conspicuous, dark lateral stripe extending from the anterior margin of the eye across the body and continued through the middle caudal-fin rays, and that covers (vertically) three or four horizontal scale rows. It also differs by having an orange-yellow stripe extending from the anterosuperior margin of the eye to the caudal peduncle above the lateral line in life. It differs from all other species of Hyphessobrycon that have a similar dark lateral stripe: H. cyanotaenia, H. loretoensis, H. melanostichos, H. nigricinctus, H. herbertaxelrodi, H. eschwartzae, H. montogoi, H. psittacus, H. metae, H. margitae, H. vanzolinii, and H. peruvianus in having only three or four pored scales in the lateral line, 21 to 24 lateral scales and six teeth in the inner premaxillary row. Hyphessobrycon klausanni differs from H. loretoensis in having seven to eight maxillary teeth (vs. three to four) and in having a longer caudal peduncle (12.4–17.0% SL vs. 4.6–8.0% SL). Additionally Hyphessobrycon klausanni can be distinguished from the other species of Hyphessobrycon with a dark lateral stripe from the Orinoco River Basin (H. metae and H. acaciae) in having two teeth in the outer premaxillary row (vs. three to four) and 10 branched pectoral–fin rays (vs. 11 to 12). It further differs from H. metae by the length of the snout (17.6–22.8% HL vs. 9.9–15.2% HL) and by the length of the caudal peduncle (12.4–17.0% SL vs. 7.3–11.8% SL).

Keywords: New taxon, Neotropical Ichthyology, Guaviare River, diversity

Figure 3. Live colours of Hyphessobrycon klausanni sp. n. Paratype, UARC–IC 540, 22.4 mm SL.

Etymology: Research leading to the discovery and recognition of this species was partially funded by Mr. Klaus-Peter Lang from Oberhausen, Germany. To commemorate the 80th birthday of his mother, this species is dedicated to and named for his father “Klaus” and his mother “Anni”.

Ecological note: Hyphessobrycon klausanni lives in shallow (0.30–1.5 m) well-oxygenated (6.39–7.68 mg/l) streams with transparent waters flowing (0.063 m/s) over different types of substrates (rocks, sand, gravel and decomposing organic material). The temperature range was narrow, 25.5–26°C but pH varied from moderately acidic to basic (6.47–8.7). Hyphessobrycon klausanni was found near shore among aquatic vegetation, tree roots and fallen logs. Other species found at the sites included: Hemigrammus barrigonae, Ctenobrycon spilurus, Tyttocharax metae, Moenkhausia oligolepis, M. chrysargyrea, M. lepidura, Chrysobrycon guahibo, Ochmacanthus orinoco, Farlowella vittata, Ancistrus triradiatus, Centromochlus reticulatus and Anablepsoides sp. Stomach content analysis (n = 4) revealed a diet of aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates: Coleoptera (Dytiscidae), Ephemeroptera, Hymenoptera (Formicidae), larvae of Chironomidae and others not identified due to the degree of fragmentation.

[Ichthyology • 2017] Phycocharax rasbora • A New Genus and Species of Brazilian Tetra (Characiformes: Characidae) from Serra do Cachimbo, rio Tapajós Basin ---ScRaBBlE

Phycocharax rasbora
Ohara, Mirande & de Lima, 2017

Abstract
A new genus and species of characid fish is described from rio Braço Norte, a tributary of rio Teles Pires, Tapajós basin, Mato Groso, Brazil. The new taxa can be diagnosed from the remaining characids by a unique combination of characters that includes the presence of a single row of relatively compressed premaxillary teeth, large teeth with four to nine cusps on premaxillary and dentary, absence of pseudotympanum, incomplete lateral line with 7–13 pored scales, sexually-dimorphic males with distal margin of anal fin approximately straight, and presence of a nearly triangular and horizontally elongated blotch from the posterior half of the body to caudal peduncle. The most parsimonious phylogenetic hypothesis, using morphological data, recovered the new genus and species in a clade including Paracheirodon axelrodi and Hyphessobrycon elachys.

Fig 3. Phycocharax rasbora, MZUSP 119843, paratype, 29.1 male (a) and MZUSP 115313, paratype, 26.4 mm SL, female (b), immediately after collection.

Family Characidae Agassiz

Phycocharax, new genus.

Type species: Phycocharax rasbora, new species, by monotypy and original description.

Diagnosis: Phycocharax can be diagnosed from the remaining characid genera by the combination of the following character-states, none of them unique: 1) presence of single row of relatively compressed premaxillary teeth (Fig 2); 2) large teeth on premaxillary, and dentary with four to nine cusps (Fig 2); 3) pseudotympanum absent; 4) incomplete lateral line with 7–13 pored scales; 5) anal fin dimorphic, males with distal margin approximately straight, and decreasing gently posteriorly (Figs 1a and 3a), while females present slightly concave margin of anal fin with anteriormost branched rays distinctly longer than remaining rays (Figs 1b and 3b); 6) presence of horizontally-elongated somewhat triangular blotch extending from vertical through dorsal-fin terminus to caudal peduncle end (Figs 1 and 3).

Etymology: From the Greek phykos, meaning “algae”, in allusion to the feeding habit of the new taxon owing to the dominance of this resource in its stomach contents, plus charax, meaning “pointed stake” or “palisade of pointed sticks”, the first generic name in Characidae. Gender masculine.

Phycocharax rasbora, new species.

Distribution: Phycocharax rasbora is so far known only from its type locality at upper rio Braço Norte, a right-bank tributary of the rio Peixoto de Azevedo, part of rio Teles Pires drainage, rio Tapajós basin (Fig 5). The rio Braço Norte drains the Serra do Cachimbo at northern Mato Grosso State, Brazilian Amazon.

Etymology: From the Bengali word “rasbora”, the common name of the fish Rasbora rasbora (Hamilton). Rasbora is a generic name encompassed a great radiation of small cyprinids from southeastern Asia, including the species currently allocated in the genus Trigonostigma, which possess a dark triangular blotch on body sides very reminiscent in shape and position similarly as found in the new species. Gender masculine. A noun in apposition.

[Ichthyology • 2017] Astyanax taurorum • A New Species (Characiformes: Characidae) from dos Touros River, Pelotas River Drainage, An Upland southern Brazilian River ---ScRaBBlE

Astyanax taurorum
de Lucena, Zaluski & de Lucena, 2017

Abstract
A new species of Astyanax belonging to the Astyanax scabripinnis complex is described from dos Touros River, tributary of the Pelotas River, Uruguay River basin. Astyanax taurorum sp. nov. is distinguished from other species of the Astyanax scabripinnis species complex by having two humeral spots, the first vertically elongated; teeth of inner row of premaxilla with three to five cusps; 2–3 (modes 2 or 3) maxillary teeth; 20–23 (mode 22) branched anal-fin rays; 13–15 (mode 14) gill rakers on lower branch of the first branchial arch; 20–23 (mode 21) total gill rakers in first branchial arch; 33–36 (mode 35) perforated lateral line scales. Astyanax taurorum sp. nov. is similar to Astyanax paris; nevertheless, it can be readily distinguished from it by having a smaller head depth (73.6-83.1% vs. 86.4–95.6%) and smaller interorbital width (24.1–28.0% vs. 30.8–32.8%). In addition, it differs from A. paris by the presence a posttemporal hook-shaped posterodorsal margin.

Astyanax taurorum sp. nov.

Etymology: The specific name taurorum, is derived from the Latin masculine noun taurus (second declension, meaning bull) inflected in the plural and genitive case. Therefore taurorum means “of the bulls” in reference to “rio dos Touros“ (= Portuguese, which means “river of the bulls”) the type locality.

Distribution and habitat: Astyanax taurorum sp. nov. is known from the dos Touros River drainage, tributary of Pelotas River, which in turn is a tributary of Uruguay River (Fig. 5). The Pelotas River drainage is located in the region named “Campos de Altitude do Planalto das Araucárias (= Araucaria Plateau in Bertaco et al. 2016)” or “Campos de Cima da Serra”, which has a high level of endemism of fishes (Malabarba et al. 2009, Bertaco et al. 2016: 430) and other groups of animals (for example: sponges, Ribeiro et. al. 2009; crustaceans, Bond-Buckup et al. 2009). The dos Touros River tributary, type locality of Astyanax taurorum sp. nov., has a low to medium flow, transparent waters with stones and rocks on the bottom and moderate emergent marginal vegetation (Fig. 6). Four characid species were caught along with Astyanax taurorum sp. nov.: Bryconamericus patriciae Silva, 2004, B. iheringi Boulenger, 1887, Cheirodon interruptus Jenyns, 1842, and Oligosarcus brevioris Menezes, 1987.

[Ichthyology • 2017] Hyphessobrycon pinnistriatus • A New species of Hyphessobrycon (Ostariophysi, Characiformes) from the Rio Teles Pires, Rio Tapajós basin, Brazil ---ScRaBBlE

Hyphessobrycon pinnistriatus
Carvalho, Cabeceira & Carvalho, 2017

 DOI: 10.1111/jfb.13362

Abstract

A new species of Hyphessobrycon from the upper Rio Tapajós basin, in the Tapajós–Juruena ecoregion, is described. Hyphessobrycon pinnistriatus n. sp. is distinguished from its congeners by having a black, oblique stripe extending from the origin of the second branched ray to the distal end of the third branched anal-fin ray, lacking a conspicuous black midlateral stripe on the body, inner premaxillary teeth with up to seven cusps, and fins normally hyaline or with scattered chromatophores. The description of a new species that is restricted to the Tapajós–Juruena ecoregion is consistent with this region being an area of high endemism of freshwater fishes.

Figure 4.  Hyphessobrycon pinnistriatus, live specimen (same locality as holotype), not preserved (c. 26·0 mm standard length).

Hyphessobrycon sp. 1 (Buckup et al., 2011: 243; list of species).
Hyphessobrycon sp. n. (Battirola et al., 2015: 477 citation); Cabeceira et al. (2015: 199, 204; list of species and photo).

Diagnosis: Hyphessobrycon pinnistriatus differs from all congeners by having a black, oblique stripe that is largely parallels and covers the second and third anal-fin rays (Fig. 1), extending from the origin of the second branched ray to the distal end of the third branched anal-fin ray (v. anal fin hyaline, with uniformly distributed chromatophores, or margin blackish in all other species of Hyphessobrycon). Additionally, the new species can be distinguished from other congeners by lacking a conspicuous black midlateral stripe on the body, inner premaxillary teeth with up to seven cusps and from Hemigrammus unilineatus (Gill 1858), a non-congener but similar species, by having 20–23 branched anal-fin rays (v. 24–25), maxilla with two or three tetra to heptacuspidad maxillary teeth (v. three to seven tricuspidad maxillary teeth) and caudal fin lacking scales (v. caudal-fin lobes scaled).

Etymology: The species name is a combination of the Latin pinna, meaning fin and striatus, meaning stripe and is in reference to the black stripe on its anal fin. An adjective in apposition.

Ecological notes: The type locality of Hyphessobrycon pinnistriatus is a second order stream (sensu Strahler, 1957), known as an igarapé, surrounded by secondary forest in regeneration. The bottom of the stream is mainly composed of silt, with litter on the margins and few branches and trunks of a diameter greater than 10 cm. In the pools, there is flocculant sediment that is easily disturbed from submerged litter and macrophytes were found at sites with a little more water flow (Fig. 6). Most individuals of H. pinnistriatus were only observed in more lentic environments, swimming in small schools of five to 20 individuals. Individuals were also observed swimming alone and together with other species of Characidae, such as Moenkhausia phaeonota Fink 1979 and Hyphessobrycon heliacus Moreira, Landim & Costa 2002 near igarapé margins with depth ranging from 20 to 40 cm. Individuals were sometimes also observed foraging among the submerged litter in the igarapé margins (F. G. Cabeceira, pers. obs.). This species has also been found in habitats with faster water, no vegetation and substrata consisting of sand and mud.

[Ichthyology • 2017] Brachychalcinus reisi • A New Species of Brachychalcinus (Characiformes: Characidae) from the rio Xingu basin, Serra do Cachimbo, Brazil ---ScRaBBlE

Brachychalcinus reisi
Garcia-Ayala, Ohara, Pastana & Benine, 2017

Abstract

Brachychalcinus reisi, a new species of characid fish, is described from the rio Curuá, tributary of rio Iriri, rio Xingu basin, Serra do Cachimbo, Pará State, Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by the presence of a series of longitudinal black wavy stripes on the entire body and by a lower number of longitudinal scale rows between dorsal-fin origin and lateral line (7–8 vs. 8–12). Additionally, the new species differs from B. copei, B. parnaibae, and B. retrospina by the lower number of branched dorsal-fin rays (9 vs.10). This is the first description of a new species of the subfamily since the revisionary study of Stethaprioninae, published almost 30 years ago.

Keywords: Pisces, Stethaprioninae, Neotropical region, freshwater fishes, taxonomy, Amazon
