[Paleontology • 2017] Almas ukhaa • A New Late Cretaceous Troodontid from Ukhaa Tolgod, Ömnögovi Aimag, Mongolia ---ScRaBBlE

ABSTRACT
A new troodontid dinosaur, Almas ukhaa, from the Late Cretaceous deposits of the Djadokhta Formation at Ukhaa Tolgod, Mongolia, is described here. The holotype specimen (IGM 100/1323) comprises an almost complete and articulated cranium and partial articulated postcranial skeleton. This specimen has a small body size and a short snout as in basal paravians, but it exhibits a number of derived troodontid features that differentiate Almas ukhaa from the Early Cretaceous troodontids reported from China and unite this new taxon with other Late Cretaceous troodontids. Relative to other troodontids, Almas ukhaa is autapomorphic in the presence of a posteriorly curved pterygoid flange, absence of a lateral groove on the anterior part of the dentary, presence of a distinct spikelike process on the ischium, and elongate chevrons. The eggshell associated with IGM 100/1323 can be assigned to Prismatoolithidae indet. based on the smooth surface, eggshell thickness, and microstructural characteristics, and also preserves attributes similar to Protoceratopsidovum minimum. A unique relationship between Byronosaurus and the perinate troodontids IGM 100/972 and IGM 100/974 is no longer supported based on the new observations of Almas ukhaa and Gobivenator.

Almas ukhaa, new taxon

Etymology: Almas is in reference to the wild man or snowman of Mongolian mythology (Rincen, 1964). Ukhaa refers to the locality of Ukhaa Tolgod, discovered in 1993, where the specimen was collected.

Abstract
The Upper Cretaceous Djadokhta Formation has been intensively surveyed for its fossil vertebrate fauna for nearly a century. Amongst other theropods, dromaeosaurids and parvicursorines are common in the formation, but ornithomimosaurs are extremely rare. A new ornithomimosaur material was discovered from the Djadokhta Formation, represented by eolian deposits, of the Tögrögiin Shiree locality, Mongolia. This is only the third ornithomimosaur specimen reported from this formation, and includes the astragalus, the calcaneum, the third distal tarsal, and a complete pes. The new material is clearly belonged to Ornithomimidae by its arctometatarsalian foot condition and has the following unique characters; unevenly developed pair of concavities of the third distal tarsal, curved contacts between the proximal ends of second and fourth metatarsals, the elongate fourth digit, and a laterally inclined medial condyle on phalanx IV-1. These diagnostic characters of the Djadokhtan ornithomimosaur indicate that this is a new taxon. Our phylogenetic analysis supports three clades within derived ornithomimosaurs, and the new taxon is placed a member of the derived ornithomimosaurs. The present specimen is the first ornithomimid record from eolian Tögrögiin Shiree locality, and is indicative of their capability to adapt to arid environments.

Aepyornithomimus tugrikinensis gen. et sp. nov.

Etymology: The generic name refers to the largest ratite bird Aepyornis~, which has similar pes structure; in Latin, ~mimus = ‘as’ or ‘like’; the species name tugrikinensis refers to the locality where the specimen was found.

Holotype: MPC-D 100/130, articulated left pes preserved with an astragalus that is missing the ascending process, a complete calcaneum, and distal tarsal III (DT-III) (Figs 2, 3 and 4). The original specimen is now housed in the Institute of Paleontology and Geology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (IPG-MAS).


Type locality and horizon: Central Sayr of Tögrögiin Shiree locality, Upper Cretaceous Djadokhta Formation (Campanian) (Fig. 1). This locality is interpreted as semi-arid eolian sediments28 with up to 52 m of light gray, cross-bedded, structureless sands and sandstones17.

Diagnosis: An ornithomimid dinosaur with the following unique characters; unevenly developed pair concavities on the posterior margin of the DT-III; robust distal articular caput of second metatarsal (Mt II) in dorsal view; proximoventrally rounded ridge of phalanx II-1 (II-1); the elongate fourth digit; laterally inclined medial condyle of phalanx IV-1 (IV-1); elongated pedal unguals.

Abstract

We provide an integrative analysis of the diversity of the E. multiocellataE. przewalskii species complex in Central and Middle Asia using morphological and molecular (COI DNA-barcoding) data. We report preliminary data on mtDNA variation within this group and clarify the taxonomic status and distribution of the members of the species complex. We also provide a description of a new Eremias species from Eastern Kazakhstan and western Mongolia, where it occurs in sympatry with E. multiocellata sensu stricto, from which it can be clearly differentiated using both morphological and molecular characters. The new species, described as Eremias dzungarica sp. nov., is assigned to the subgenus Pareremias on the basis of the following features: subocular not reaching mouth edge; one frontonasal; two supraoculars; the row of small granular scales between supraoculars and frontal with frontoparietals absent; distance between the femoral pore rows being wide; femoral pore rows not reaching knee-joint; coloration pattern with light colored ocelli with black edging. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners on the basis of the following morphological attributes: a medium-sized lacertid lizard, maximum snout-vent length (SVL) = 64.5 mm, tail being ca. 1.5 times longer than body length (SVL), hindlimbs relatively long (hindlimb length to SVL ratio 0.46); subocular scale not reaching mouth edge, in touch with 6–8 supralabials; males with bright coloration consisting of 2–3 dorsolateral rows of light-colored ocelli with thick black edging; the ventral row of ocelli in life is greenish to bluish; dorsal pattern consisting of black irregular blotches along the middorsal line. We also report on the high genetic and morphological diversity of E. multiocellata in Mongolia and China, synonymize E. m. bannikowi with the nominative form E. m. multiocellata, discuss variation within E. przewalskii, synonymize E. p. tuvensis with the nominative form E. przewalskii, provide new data on E. cf. reticulata and E. m. tsaganbogdensis, confirm validity and clarify distribution ranges of E. stummeri, E. szczerbaki and E. yarkandensis and discuss further progress on taxonomic studies of the E. multiocellataE. przewalskii species complex.

Etymology. The specific name “dzungarica” is a Latin toponymic adjective in the nominative singular (feminine gender), referring to the distribution of the new species covering the area of Dzungaria, now in easternmost Kazakhstan, northern part of Chinese Xinjiang and the westernmost part of Mongolia (Dzungarian Gobi).

Reccomended vernacular name. We recommend the following common name in English: Dzungarian Racerunner. Recommended common name in Mongolian: Züüngaryn gürvel; in Russian: Dzhungarskaya yaschurka.

[Paleontology • 2017] Gigantic Pterosaurian Remains from the Upper Cretaceous of Mongolia ---ScRaBBlE

 ABSTRACT
Fragmentary cervical vertebral elements of a gigantic pterosaur are described from the upper Campanian–Maastrichtian Nemegt Formation in the Gobi Desert. With an estimated width of a posterior centrum across the postexapophyses of 198 mm, this taxon represents one of the largest pterosaurs currently known. This is the first discovery of a pterosaur from the Nemegt Formation, adding further evidence that gigantic pterosaurs were widely distributed in Eurasia and North America during the latest Cretaceous.

Abstract
Recent discoveries of new oviraptorosaurs revealed their high diversity from the Cretaceous Period in Asia and North America. Particularly, at the family level, oviraptorids are among the most diverse theropod dinosaurs in the Late Cretaceous of Mongolia and China. A new oviraptorid dinosaur Gobiraptor minutus gen. et sp. nov. from the Upper Cretaceous Nemegt Formation is described here based on a single holotype specimen that includes incomplete cranial and postcranial elements. The most prominent characters of Gobiraptor are its thickened rostrodorsal end of the mandibular symphysis and a rudimentary lingual shelf on each side of the dentary. Each lingual shelf is lined with small occlusal foramina and demarcated by a weakly developed lingual ridge. This mandibular morphology of Gobiraptor is unique among oviraptorids and likely to be linked to a specialized diet that probably included hard materials, such as seeds or bivalves. The osteohistology of the femur of the holotype specimen indicates that the individual was fairly young at the time of its death. Phylogenetic analysis recovers Gobiraptor as a derived oviraptorid close to three taxa from the Ganzhou region in southern China, but rather distantly related to other Nemegt oviraptorids which, as the results of recent studies, are also not closely related to each other. Gobiraptor increases diversity of oviraptorids in the Nemegt Formation and its presence confirms the successful adaptation of oviraptorids to a mesic environment.

Gobiraptor minutus gen. et sp. nov.

Etymology: The generic name Gobiraptor is a combination of ‘Gobi’ which refers to the Gobi Desert where the holotype specimen was found and ‘raptor’ which is Latin for thief. The specific name ‘minutus’ is Latin for small and refers to the small size of the holotype specimen.

Holotype: The holotype specimen (MPC-D 102/111) (Figs 2–4, S2 and S3 Figs) consists of mostly incomplete cranial and postcranial elements including ventral parts of the premaxillae and maxillae, a tip of the right jugal, fused vomer, parts of articulated pterygoids and ectopterygoids, incomplete right palatine, central part of the left postorbital, partial right quadrate and quadratojugal, incomplete lower jaw, with most of its elements broken, the last sacral vertebra which is articulated with the two proximalmost caudal vertebrae, articulated but incomplete proximal caudal vertebrae, fragments of chevrons, partial right scapula and humerus, incomplete pelvic girdles, nearly complete both femora, complete left metatarsus with distal tarsals 3 and 4, incomplete left pedal digits I, III, and IV, and several unidentified fragments. MPC-D 102/111 was also found with other theropod skeletons including postcranial elements of alvarezsaurids and larger oviraptorids.


Type locality and horizon: Altan Uul III, Ömnögovi Province, Mongolia (Fig 1, S1 Fig). Upper Cretaceous Nemegt Formation.

Diagnosis: Gobiraptor minutus is an oviraptorid dinosaur diagnosed by the following unique set of characteristics (autapomorphies are marked with an asterisk): a flat articular surface for the quadratojugal on the quadrate*; rostrocaudally elongate dentary rostral to the external mandibular fenestra; extremely thickened rostrodorsal end of the mandibular symphysis with a caudal expansion of its dorsal surface *; a rudimentary lingual triturating shelf on each dentary bearing small occlusal foramina*; a weakly developed lingual ridge on each lingual shelf*; absence of any prominent symphyseal ventral process of the dentary; coronoid bone present; the rostral end of the coronoid bone wedging into the ventral surface of the dorsal ramus of the dentary*; cranial trochanter of the femur separated from the greater trochanter with a distinct furrow between them.

Conclusions: 
Gobiraptor minutus gen. et sp. nov. is a new derived oviraptorid represented by an incomplete skeleton including both cranial and postcranial elements. Gobiraptor is primarily distinguished from other oviraptorids by its dentary with the extremely thickened rostrodorsal end of the mandibular symphysis, lingual ridges and lingual shelves bearing occlusal foramina. The unique morphology of the mandible of Gobiraptor is probably closely related to a crushing-related feeding style and a specialized diet, which may have incorporated hard seeds or shelled organisms. Although Gobiraptor was recovered from the Nemegt Formation, its phylogenetic position showed a close relationship with three Ganzhou oviraptorids. The distant relationships among the Nemegt oviraptorids on the phylogenetic tree were reaffirmed in this study. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that the evolution of these unusually diverse animals was facilitated by a simple sympatric speciation. The presence of Gobiraptor in the Nemegt Formation, together with occurrences of other oviraptorids, also indicates that abundant oviraptorids lived in mesic environments and they were one of the most diverse and successful groups of dinosaurs in the Nemegt region.

Abstract
A presumably mostly quadrupedal ankylopollexian iguanodontian, Bayannurosaurus perfectus gen. et sp. nov., is reported here, and is represented by an excellently well-preserved skeleton from the Lower Cretaceous Bayingebi Formation of Inner Mongolia, China. The diagnosis of the taxon includes several autapomorphies, notably a dorsally directed, strap-like posterodorsal process of the jugal and a horizontally oriented preacetabular process of the ilium. The nearly complete caudal series retains eight posterior-most caudals with procoelous, trapezoidal centra in dorsal view, and the last three caudals are fully fused. The discovery of B. perfectus opens a critical new window on the early evolution and intercontinental dispersal of Iguanodontia. The skeleton displays a transitional morphology between non-hadrosauriform ankylopollexians and Hadrosauriformes. A phylogenetic analysis indicates that Bayannurosaurus is positioned higher on the tree than Hypselospinus, but below Ouranosaurus just outside of Hadrosauriformes. The tree topology of Iguanodontia with temporal and spatial constraints reveals a possible biogeographic scenario supported by the statistical dispersal-vicariance analysis: around the J/K boundary, non-hadrosauriform ankylopollexians experienced multiple dispersal events from Europe to Asia, accompanying the coeval fall of the global sea level.

Bayannurosaurus perfectus gen. et sp. nov.

 Etymology: Bayannur’, the name of the general geographic area where the fossil was retrieved; ‘saurus’, based on the Greek word ‘sauros’ for lizard. ‘perfectus’, in reference to the perfect preservation of the skeleton designated as the holotypic specimen.

Holotype: IMMNH PV00001 (housed at the Inner Mongolia Museum of Natural History, Hohhot, Inner Mongolia), a nearly complete, semi-articulated skeleton, including the entire caudal series.

 Locality and horizon: Chulumiao, ∼7 km north of Chaogewenduer Town, Urad Rear Banner, Bayannur, Inner Mongolia (Fig. 1b); middle part of the upper half of the Bayingebi Formation (Fig. 1c); Early Cretaceous (early Aptian).

Iguanodontia is among the first-discovered dinosaurian groups in the world, and has become one of the best studied ornithischian clades, which refers to its taxonomic, phylogenetic and ontogenetic significance for dinosaurian evolution. Ankylopollexia represents a relatively derived iguanodontian clade that displays large body size and many highly modified features for more efficient herbivory and locomotion. Although relevant studies on European and North American material enhanced our knowledge of the early evolution of Ankylopollexia, the extreme scarcity of non-hadrosauriform ankylopollexians in Asia had long hindered attempts to comprehensively elucidate evolutionary history and related issues of the global iguanodontians. The research team led by Dr. Xing Xu names and describes a new non-hadrosauriform ankylopollexian Bayannurosaurus perfectus represented by an excellently wellpreserved skeleton, from the Lower Cretaceous Bayingebi Formation, western Inner Mongolia, China. The discovery of this new taxon is very helpful in understanding the origin and early evolution of Hadrosauriformes, optimizing the phylogenetic framework of non-hadrosaurid iguanodontians and clarifying the global biogeographic history of Iguanodontia around the Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary (see the article by Xing Xu et al. on page 556).
